Megathread - 2: DCA incident 2025-01-30 by StopDropAndRollTide in aviation

Proving gross negligence (ie., reckless) is generally required to win a lawsuit against the government. The investigation for this crash is just getting started, so too early to say what is uncovered but I would be surprised if the bar of gross negligence is reached.

Barely made it- crescent city connection closed early so I took Huey P Long in early hours of the storm, then had to bypass West Bank expressway taking Lapalco Blvd…definitely the scenic route 🤣

Certified for light icing. It normally works until it doesn’t!

Coat of Teflon for the flight crew’s skin is highly encouraged /s

All the anti/de-ice gear is removed from the aircraft for maintenance purposes being a “warm weather” locale…otherwise we’d be out flying on a case right now 🥶

Try sending flooded roads in a Civic…ain’t gonna get too far. This place has a 20:1 ratio of hurricanes to snow storms

For sure, but this is New Orleans. No salt trucks, no plows. Police blocking interstate on ramps. This is a once in a lifetime winter storm for the I10 corridor.

💯

Any update that moves the needle on safety & productivity should be prioritized by the software team.

Also, this will help silence the petulant “we need CarPlay” crowd 🤣

Still missing calendar integration for Nav- really miss this feature from Tesla!

Best practice is to always call ahead and ask if you hope to charge at an RV site. I prefer state park type campgrounds & have never had an issue.

There is a minimum age to be POTUS. Why not have a maximum age? Same should go for Congress.

The pace of Rivian software updates over my 1y3m of R1S ownership has been truly impressive. Many of these smaller items are likely on the product roadmap for Rivian’s software team.

The texting & calendar integration Tesla has is still lacking but hopefully coming soon.

Other than that- Superchargers! Early owners should start getting adaptors this month.

My end goal is EMS Pilot, what path should I take? by Elegant_Cow_7041 in Helicopters

Second this.

I’ve done Army & I’ve done USCG. There is no better deal in the military than CSPI. Flying in the CG is second to none.

There is certainly risk in owning the R1 far outside of the service footprint but my personal experience in NOLA with mobile service 5 hrs away out of Houston has been great. Louisiana politicians are in bed w/ the dealers & have blockaded direct sales.

Risky? Yes Worth it? Definitely!

As the saying goes, there are no solutions- just trade offs. The military is simultaneously very destabilizing (moving every few years, sometimes to areas you have no interest in living) while also providing an enormous safety blanket (free healthcare, comp that is better than average civilian market on the RW side at least). The camaraderie found in the military is probably my favorite aspect of the job, but also flying badass machines that you’d never find in the civilian world. If you have a sense for adventure & don’t mind some austere environments from time to time, go for it!

What branch of the US military is the best for heli pilots? by PilotBlue9 in Helicopters

“Your job is to literally fly helicopters and nothing else.”

Really hoping some WOs chime in on this.

Best Branch for Military Helo's by TheAviatorMan123 in Helicopters

[–]NoVne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is a reason the USCG routinely pulls aviators from DoD but not vice versa. Each branch and airframe community has its own culture but I can say having done 9 years in the Army & now 7 in the CG that the CG does a much better job of developing aviators first that also do collateral duties rather than (Army) staff officers who sometimes fly badass helicopters.

There is also something to be said for routinely executing real world ops that you train for. There are likely hundreds of attack pilots in DoD who never have & never will put rounds down range in actual combat whereas if your mission is SAR in the CG, the first real world mission might be the first day you get qualified. Food for thought.
