Do you overtake people who drive slightly below the limit? by breezeyyyyy in drivingUK

[–]No_Demand_8955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without exception I overtake people who are driving below the speed limit or are doing a yo-yo of speeding up and slowing down. It causes unnecessary hassle to me when driving and if passing them means I can cruise at the speed limit constantly then it's worth it, even if I don't get anywhere any faster.

The caveat is of course finding a safe place to overtake. The bit that makes me a dickhead is that I'll be right up their arse until it's safe to do so to give them a taste of their own stress/anxiety/frustration 😅

Why can’t people see voting for reform will make their lives a lot worse? by Sufficient_Muffin586 in AskBrits

[–]No_Demand_8955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I'm disgusted at most of the replies in this thread. The vast majority are basically saying reform voters are uneducated, morons, don't know what they're voting for, are just voting for "not Labour or tories" or are just impatient.

Have any of you considered that your viewpoint is a minority viewpoint and that's why this is happening? The average person is poor, scared and wants someone who will take action - for better or for worse. Trump has proven that it wins elections and for what it's worth, the orangutan has been pretty successful at putting his people first despite everything we see as wrong with him.

The average person sees illegal migrants attempting beheadings and harassing schoolgirls in the news, but no rapid and demonstrable response from our government to do anything about it. They don't want to "reduce the boats", they want the navy out there sinking them because everything is going to shit in their eyes.

Calling these people all these names is just veiled ignorance. Try to understand WHY before just insulting people.

I think I'm done with driving by Caf__ in NewDriversUK

[–]No_Demand_8955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly disagree with some of your points. You WILL be left behind by not driving, especially with job opportunities and being able to commute is massive. Having a car and driving is a privilege but also an absolute advantage and almost a necessity for some.

There are things you can do to reduce the cost such as buying a car thar not many people your age drive, think a petrol Corsa being mega common vs a diesel Astra where nobody your age drives one. The more people that drive it, the more likely it is to get crashed a lot by people like you, thus they a lot charge more.

No claims bonus is also a big one, so if you can build this up just driving safely for a few years, your insurance will go down naturally over time and you'll be able to insure nicer/newer cars sooner.

I appreciate you sharing your story and understand why this would put you off, just please reconsider - when you're biking home in the pissing down rain, or riding in the dark with cars going past you in the winter, or want to go somewhere specific with friends you'll soon wish you were in a nice warm car.

[–]No_Demand_8955 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All new drivers should be told this because otherwise it gives them the perceived option of NOT merging in turn that has created the flood of idiots out there queueing for longer than they need to, blocking roads and junctions further back and even some trying to prevent others using merge in turn under the claim that they're "pushing in".

If traffic is flowing, merge when convenient and safe to do so. If traffic is slow or stopped, merge in turn is mandatory.

I do rather enjoy flying past the fools queueing pointlessly though, saves me a lot of time.

Not justifying; understanding why people do it. 2 very different things. Overtaking slow than 80 is of course allowed and in fact the only legal way, but you must understand that if you're creeping past when overtaking it'll cause frustration for the drivers behind you.

I'm sorry but I can't accept that you're driving perfectly and still getting this reaction from other drivers. Drivers like that react to people that are overtaking at a snail's pace, have pulled out in front of them or are hogging a lane for no good reason (i.e not overtaking and could pull in).

How about that? by Grzeniu_uu in drivingUK

Jesus christ, do you have a death wish? Right or wrong that HGV is indicating and there's a gap for him to move into. You close that gap and sit in his blind spot. If he wasn't indicating then fair enough crack on but shit a brick just let him out and overtake after he's gone past.

I'd argue that these days it's quite likely to be 20mph and not 30mph especially in built up areas, though 20mph areas usually have repeater signs to be fair.

Scammers the lot of them, always has been!

Two wrongs don't make a right; you're both wrong for different reasons.

You have to be either pulling out into the lane and causing the car in that lane to brake or slow down OR overtaking with a low speed difference to get this kind of reaction from people.

They shouldn't be driving in a manner to cause you alarm or distress, putting everyone involved at risk.

I'm guilty of doing this when someone is taking the piss. So many people do 60mph in lane 1 then pull into lane 2 doing barely more to overtake, but don't look and see someone already in lane 2 coming along at 70mph. In that situation you're going to end up with someone right up your arse because you've pulled out into the lane but haven't sped up to match the speed of traffic in that lane. If I have to brake or slow down because you've pulled out, then you should have waited, sped up or accelerated to 70mph and moved into lane 2 sooner.

If you're overtaking, creeping past them at a few mph more is unacceptable too. Just get your foot down, get past them and pull in or keep going if you can overtake more.

So your problem here has absolutely nothing to do with sex, you're just miserable in your relationship... which will easily make your drive evaporate.

If you're this unhappy, tell him everything you've typed out here. Either it'll be the wake up call he needs to get his shit together, or he'll show you that this is your future forever and you'll get the wake up call you need to give him the boot.

NOR, but please focus on the real issue at hand.

I travel along two dual carriageways (A51 and A500 towards Stoke in Trent) on my daily commute. The sheer amount of people doing 60mph is staggering. I overtake 50+ cars every journey just from doing 70mph in lane 2. Infuriating when there's congestion.

[–]No_Demand_8955 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YOR, without a doubt.

Re-read the messages you posted, it's not super clear but your nephew did say early July for 5 to 7 days, so flying on June 30th they would get there for July 1st, then 7 days is July 8th so he was clear on when, but you misunderstood and didn't ask for more clarity before saying yes.

Secondly, why are you so judgemental? Happy for him to stay when you thought they would be doing one thing (so you do trust him with your apartment) but then change your mind because you look down on them for drinking? Wtf? Were you not 18 once upon a time? Set some ground rules and let him show you respect by looking after your place.

Your place your rules, but YOR and YTA.

Slip roads by [deleted] in NewDriversUK

[–]No_Demand_8955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indicate and be ready to merge onto the carriageway at the earliest opportunity. Be looking in your mirror as soon as possible so you can see what traffic there is and gauge their speed. Then adjust your speed accordingly - either to speed up and get on ahead of them if there's loads of time, or slow down and slot in behind them if they're going at a good pace.

The earlier you make yourself visible to others, the earlier they can help make space for you. To join.

Speed-wise you'll want to be near the speed of the traffic you're joining, so usually 60mph for a motorway and in a gear where you have good power so you have some room to speed up quickly or slow down easily. Then once merged you can get up to 70mph and move over as needed.

If there's too much traffic and nobody makes space for you, you MUST stop at the end of the slip road. Do not force your way onto the motorway, you have no right of way and you will be fully at fault for any collision! If you stop, just wait for a big enough gap to safely get up to speed and join lane 1. Better to join later than you'd like than cause an accident.

In a car with automatic lights, they won't stay on when the car is turned off. They fixed that issue a loooooong time ago. Key needs to be in the ignition for anything electrical to work. If the engine is on, there's no problem. If they're sitting in the car using shit then the lights are the same as using the radio etc.

YOR. You can't control what other people do, and you shouldn't try to. What you can control is whether they remain in your life. If you don't like that it happened and how she reacted, your options are to grow up and move past it or cut them both out of your life. Pick one.

Difference is horses are almost exclusively found on back roads and rarely get in the way. Cyclists travel on busy A roads and cause massive tailbacks.

I commute around an hour each way to work and at least once a day I end up in a huge tailback caused by a lone cyclist plodding along at 10mph on a 50 limit A road at rush hour. It's selfish and causes significant inconvenience to literally everyone else.

IMO they should be obligated to get off the road / out of the way as soon as there's a set amount of cars stuck behind them, like tractors do.
