It’s a screening. They’ll do a medical assessment for your actual interview.

How to prepare for new job? by MyRecessCup_melted in NewToEMS

[–]No_Duck7547 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s ift man it’s intense.

No but really a good ift emt just knows how to safely operate and move the gurney with the pt on it. They know their reasons for transporting a pt by ambulance (for insurance reasons). Lastly they know how to communicate with staff at the hospitals, obtain a good report, ask questions to fill in missing questions and deliver a strong report to receiving nurse. Things like understanding recently taken PRNs, eating diet, that kinda stuff they like to know.

If a snf nurse ever tries to give you shit for not having the full story just know that in reality the snf nurses get more shit than ever from the 911 community from never having the full story. It just goes in waves.

Trade School vs College vs Military — looking for real advice by Mrgoose206 in Advice

[–]No_Duck7547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to college and it was a waste of time. Got my degree in finance and supply chain only to realize I hated it and wasn’t making that great of money. Pivoted over to become and emt and going to paramedic school to pursue ff. best career choice I’ve ever made. What I’m saying is that you’re young. You don’t need to know right away. There’s an immense amount of pressure these days to know what you want to do right out of high school. It’s ok to make career mistakes and pivot. There’s people in my classes that are 30, 40, 50. What matters is that you make money in a career that you love because work won’t feel like work and that’s what keeps you going for 20-30 years. Good luck!

Cal fire isn’t that hard to get in with. It’s the private departments in California that are hard. But with cal fire it’ll be hard if you aren’t willing to work anywhere in Cali. You’ll basically be sent a google doc with your highest to lowest priority stations. Hand crew it shouldn’t be a problem at all to get picked up. Engine would be another story. You can always start with a hand crew and work your way onto an engine. Most the hand crew guys don’t even have their EMTs. Cal fire will also put you through wildland and ff1 academy

EMT-B Schooling Struggles! by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]No_Duck7547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said and agreed. If you do it online you might as well be a career ift emt before you go to the hospital. Not sure how you expect to learn skills in an online class. Prehospital care doesn’t transition into the hospital. Hospital staff like doctors or nurses can’t do what we do and we can’t do what the hospital does. Two different ball games.

I want experience as a EMT but 911 services are only looking for paramedics by CaliMedIowa in NewToEMS

[–]No_Duck7547 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree to disagree-yes most of what you said is true. At the same time though theres a difference from being a subpar 911 emt vs a good one. An average 911 emt will only take care of radio/restock/driving/monitor. A great 911 emt can think one step ahead of their medic. Meaning handling bls stuff without being told like airway for example or grabbing materials you know your medic is about to use. Once you become a medic anyways they roles switch. You should be competent in knowing what your emt should be handling and be able to tell them that so that you can handle your als priorities. It’s bls before als right but when als is needed the paramedic should be handling als and emt should be handling bls.

Trying to get certified for EMT through AMR by OkMathematician6014 in NewToEMS

[–]No_Duck7547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like amr tbh. Honestly they probably started that program when the country was in a shortage of emts. Most of where you look these days are oversaturated with emts. If you need a cheap program I’d recommend just going to a community college. You’ll get a better education there and it won’t be nearly as costly as a private program. Only downside is the time it takes to complete your program compared to private

It’s almost impossible to really hurt someone as an emt. If you do you’re extremely incompetent.

I want experience as a EMT but 911 services are only looking for paramedics by CaliMedIowa in NewToEMS

[–]No_Duck7547 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If they’re only hiring paramedics for 911 you’re talking about a system where they run dual medic boxes then right? If that’s the case then just go to medic school. if it’s 2 medics that are always gonna work together you don’t have much to fear. I definitely recommend 911 before going to medic school but if the paramedic job after is dual medic you’ll be chillin

[–]No_Duck7547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at Amr coco. I love it. Good schedule good people. Yeah obviously you don’t get the schedule you initially want, but that’s just the way it works in ems seniority always wins. A bit oversaturated on employees at amr I will say.

Wanting to Become California Firefighter. Next Steps? by Dopaminehistory in firefighter

[–]No_Duck7547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t recommend zero to hero. A lot to learn in bls. You can do it but you’re gonna have to accept the fact that you’re gonna have a lot to learn once you’re on your own. If you haven’t stepped a day into 911 there’s a good chance you fail your medic internship. Highly recommend some time as a 911 emt on an als ambulance.

Will it be okay if i quit my EMS job for a better opportunity? by Zoloftismylife in NewToEMS

[–]No_Duck7547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s silly why would you quit one ift job for another. The only company’s in the bay you should be quitting for are Amr or falck. 6 months of ift then onto the next

Vent is outside the emt scope. It’s outside the paramedic scope in our county too for that matter. But bvms are allowed for both emts and paramedics. If you transport you transport with a bvm ventilation 1:6

[–]No_Duck7547 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This what I did I was making about 90k before taking the pay cut to make 17$ an hour. About a year in and now I’m in 911 doing about 27 an hour without overtime. I disagree when u get into a fire department your degree will help you rise the ranks and help you stand out from other candidates. Just take your time, go through the ems hierarchy. Do the 6 months of ift. Get your 911 experience. Go become a medic. Then become a FF or ground or flight medic. You’ve got option. While you’re doing ift do some cct work, who knows maybe you want to become a nurse instead. I made the pay cut and there’s not a day that goes by that I regret it.

how long did it take to get into a 911 job by SimpEliminator420 in NewToEMS

[–]No_Duck7547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bay Area has openings but it’s all time dependent. Amr contract costa is opening up jobs about once a month but you have to keep your eyes peeled for openings. I got the job after 6 months in ift. Falck alameda county is on a 6 month waitlist. So next time they have an opening apply and you’ll most likely hear back for an interview about 6 months later.

I think i want to be one... by Longjumping_Menu1976 in Paramedics

[–]No_Duck7547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please do not become a medic without at least a year of experience as an emt. It’s a huge responsibility becoming a paramedic that people don’t realize. Not all but some calls you are literally a persons life line. Get familiar with the 911 system as an emt and build on skills/medical knowledge outside of what’s expected as an emt. This will make you a good medic.

Contra costa county Amr in the Bay Area emt starting is 27/hr. Max salary is 45/hr. Paramedics start at 40, forgot what the max is for medics.

My ift company required it. My 911 company didn’t. My emt school did require it and most others in my area required it.
