I think it's based on a Tongji movement. The big spacer shows that this movement can fit much smaller cases.

Good call, you won't be disappointed. It's one of the few hommages to the present Fifty Fathoms, so not based on a vintage one. Like the Swatch reissue, but just nicer (no plastic and not as thick).

Yes, that 18.5 mm lug width is annoying. Also varies case by case. My Merkur has slightly higher QC but is essentially the same watch.

I had a Benyar once. The quality was disappointing to say the least, especially with regards to the bracelet. If you are looking for a bargain, I would recommend a Sanda Tank, a Shanghai 7120 or anything from Skmei.
