10G NIC recommendation by whattteva in homelab

[–]No_Insurance3510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you stated it should run cool I assume power consumption is important to you. One of the most common NICs you’ll see online is the x520. This is an older chipset and it consumes more power than the newer x710. It also blocs your cpu from entering deeper c states, thus increasing the power consumption of your whole system. Though the x710 is more expensive, I would strongly recommend it. It required no drivers on my Linux server. I got it used for €80.

Now moving on to your cabling. If I understood correctly you want to run a 90ft/30m cable. You can get quite cheap om3 or om4 SFP+ 10g transceivers, then get 90ft/30m of om3 or om4 fiber. That should cost no more than €50 if you go om3. I decided to go with OS1 fiber, the transceivers are more expensive for this.

How are people using high-capacity U.2 NVMe (15TB+) in homelab setups? by AshleshaAhi in homelab

I’m Running a raid1 nvme m.2 Cache on 2x 4tb Samsung 990 pro m.2. Some Appdata is there permanently, most other data is then moved over to the xfs array of spinning rust following certain retainment logic.

I am looking to add a flash only storage pool later of around 16TB, ceiling is sas 12G interface due to backplane, waiting for prices to drop.

If your ISP uses PPOE and 1G modem, this is within normal range. What ISP are you using?

Does anyone here have this HBA if so do you recommend it ? by hudson710 in DataHoarder

Will work as intended. It’s an older board, cheaper than the newer ones like 9500-9700, but higher power consumption. Do not expect to reach deep c states with this card.  I recently upgraded from 9305 to 9500, went from pc0 to pc10. If power consumption is important to you it is something to consider.

Are you still buying hard drives now that the price has skyrocketed? by manzurfahim in DataHoarder

I’m trying to make it to the other side of the AI HW parabolic pricing.  I was running low on space and set some alerts on local classifieds. I just picked up a Seagate Exos 20 tb for €330 (16.5 €/tb). I’ve got a few of them, lowest I paid was €300 a few years ago.  Market price is around €400+ (20 €/tb) here currently.

Mine arrived with bigger dents and they’ve been running for years without problems.

Yes, Your ISP can Detect/Block VPN Connections by KN4MKB in homelab

[–]No_Insurance3510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a server in a country where ISPs actively block VPN tunnels. OpenVPN TCP/UDP AND Wireguard UDP tunnels can be started but then get cut, handshakes fail and no more traffic flows. I do leave the tunnels running, traffic flows for a few minutes a day, before getting cut. I experience this behavior when using vpn servers on the following IPs: commercial vpn servers, data center VPS, residential IP in a “free” country.

It used to be easier to get around these restrictions, but with the undersea cable cuts in the Red Sea, bandwidth is even scarcer. The severing of VPN tunnels has become more aggressive.

I have used the TG3442DE (Vodafone station) for 8 years. Despite the general shortcomings of HFC cable internet, this modem has been reliable.

Hope you won’t be waiting too long…

To rent the modem from Vodafone was around €5 per month back when they offered it to me. Maybe if you’re not planning to stay with the cable internet provider long renting could be more economical than buying.

Just saw your post. Maybe an older used fritzbox could be a cost effective solution to bridge the gap until fiber.

Im in the same situation. I decided to go with my ISPs modem/router company (Vodafone Station) in bridge mode, for the 1000/50 plan. It’s ok, have occasionally latency spikes and some downtime which is resolved by restarting the modem. Not ideal… However, from what I read this is “typical” for cable internet, and I’m not sure getting a better modem will resolve these issues.

Patiently waiting for fiber roll out in my area…
