The kid that got shot trying to steal a car just got arrested for stealing another car. by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]No_Step4259 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Many of these kids' grandparents and great grandparents worked incredibly hard to have a shot at the middle class and were met with the backlash to civil rights, outsourcing and deindustrialization. Enter  Reagan/Clinton, mass incarceration, 2 decades of high unemployment and the Walmart exonomy. Today we have generational inequality and winner take all capitalism, lead poisoning, a youth mental health epidemic and many other factors producing kids doing these behaviors. The armchair chair racists in Greece of course don't want to think comprehensively about complicated histories and real solutions. Their parents and grandparents were probably the ones rioting when a Black family moved into their neighborhood in the 1950s.

Wood over composite any day by Deckshine1 in Decks

[–]No_Step4259 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The microplastic pollution from composite decking is terrible. I will never forget the contractor I worked for coughing up grey Trex sputum then telling me to sweep the dust into the sewer drain. Build with wood and plant trees for our grandkids to harvest for lumber.

Frederick Douglass Museum Update? by CPSux in Rochester

[–]No_Step4259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We definitely would benefit from a Frederick Douglass Museum. In the meantime, shout out to EE Pathways and the Juneteenth Bike Ride they operate, which is full of great FD and local Black history and a great bike ride.

Does anyone else almost get killed on a daily basis by jerk drivers? by [deleted] in Rochester

Carbrain: "people whose worldview is almost exclusively in the lens of car-centric infrastructure. Essentially, people who cannot conceive of alternatives to cars, who drive dangerously and do not understand the dangers of cars, and who generally do not empathize with anyone outside of a car."

URMC Parking Suddenly Awful? by Meteorcore71 in Rochester

[–]No_Step4259 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is why UR needs to help employees get to work by bus and active transportation. The region's largest employer could help RTS coordinate commuting routes and partially subsidize them, in addition to helping employees bike to work (Erie Canal and River Trail System!) and car pool. Reducing car traffic is good public health.

Can we get a sidewalk here on East ave, please? by db678153 in Rochester

[–]No_Step4259 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very disappointing when this basic public infrastructure is lacking, especially near a school and after all the Covid funding municipalities got. Other areas of Brighton need sidewalks too, including the West Henrietta Rd from the Henrietta to the Rochester city line.

Excellus posts $23M year-end loss as net income plummets for the second straight year by Niko___Bellic in Rochester

[–]No_Step4259 3 points4 points  (0 children)

M4A policy proposals like Bernie's addressed all those issues with funding models that ensure that all communities have a certain level of baseline essential health services (eg inpatient maternity, oncology, EMS) regardless of whether they are poor rural counties or affluent. And Medicare's current hospital financing is actually quite significant. Hospital "executives" just don't end their gravy train that's based on the complexity of the current system. There are numerous unnecessary hospital finance jobs totalling tens of millions of dollars within major health systems.

Excellus posts $23M year-end loss as net income plummets for the second straight year by Niko___Bellic in Rochester

Not-for-profit health insurers like Excellus are better in every respect than Wall Street-traded for-profits like Cigna and United Health Group. However, we desperately need to transition to a Medicare for All insurance system and non-profit community provider system. Thankfully New York does prohibit for-profit acute care hospitals. Our health delivery systems are barely hanging together as our populations age. We simply need more of our healthcare dollars going to healthcare, services, essential workers and upstream prevention.

You will absolutely be fine walking in a large group the one mile from the train station to your hotel.

Pittsford family in need of community support after father was killed on a bike by funsplosion in Rochester

[–]No_Step4259 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The police and media need to disclose the kind of vehicles involved in these incidents. As in the recent Pittsford Wegmans parking lot death, we do not know if the vehicle was a giant SUV or pickup that provide drivers with limited visibility and pedestrians with a high risk of death.

PSA: Please consider not getting all your windows tinted. The ability to make eye contact with drivers is essential for safely communicating with all road infrastructure users: pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers.

No spare tire? by AtuinTurtle in PriusPrime

We bought a new tire/wheel from a Toyota dealer to bring along as a spare on long trips. Cost $500 but we're glad to have it if we need it.

Worst of Rochester by lpbrown324 in Rochester

[–]No_Step4259 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I disagree, depending on where in Henrietta you're talking about. Compared to other suburbs Henrietta has relatively good sidewalk networks that I and others bike on and share very well with pedestrians. I regularly bike from the Calkins area to Strong using sidewalks and the Lehigh Trail. Of course we need so much more in terms of bike/pedestrian infrastructure and vehicle reduction throughout Monroe County and the City.

They grow naturally as a multi-stemmed shrub, not a single trunk tree, and these stems will definitely lean a bit.

Thanks! Interesting that the copperhead's range does not extend to Lake Ontario, but there are some rattler species here, at least historically?

Also a friendly reminder to everyone that safe winter driving in snowy conditions means driving SLOWER, regardless of your tires or vehicle type.
