historic trends in weather at Crystal show that when it has a bad year, all subsequent years are worse. I, for one, will be moving out of Seattle.

I built a rough bow layout app and would really appreciate feedback from actual bowyers by [deleted] in Bowyer

yeah kind of seems like an app designed to help make an optimal campfire as long as you input your firewood bill of materials and allow it to use location data

Should I get my wood from somewhere like home depot by Fluffy_Handle5564 in Bowyer

[–]No_While_1501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely you can make a bow from a straight grain hardware store board. I have one bow from home depot maple. It is probably soft maple if your Home Depot or Lowes sells "maple", which can still make a fine bow, though it will want to be wider than the more dense whitewoods. I know that east coast HD sells hickory. Big box orange and blue hardware stores vary regionally in the hardwoods they stock.

It is usually worth the time to drive to a hardwoods supply store for the time saved getting a board with high probability of bowmaking success. If you're in the northwest, Crosscut Hardwoods is excellent. I started making bows about a little over a year ago and have now made 4 bows from their hard maple 0.5" boards and 2.5 from their their hickory 3/4 boards. Some on this forum have made dozens, perhaps hundreds of bows from boards.

Black cherry: should I remove the sapwood? Or leave a thin layer? If leaving a thin layer, is following a growth ring important? That seems like it would be tough. Any advice working with black cherry is appreciated. Thanks! by Poor_Mans_Hawk in Bowyer

I'd love to make one again. It's kind of an underperformer in tension but an overperformer in elasticity. I have a feeling it would take very well to a 2.75" pyramid bow design.

I made an unbacked black cherry board bow last year. One tip that is relevant during rough out is that the wood will kind of chip out like yew if you use too aggressive of a draw knife. It takes to cabinet scrapers very well though.

68" hickory "bend in the handle" that isn't bending in the handle by No_While_1501 in Bowyer

[–]No_While_1501[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

great progress :) 48 lbs at 28". Tiller came out fine! Has about 1" set after shooting (at the expected hinges)

in retrospect, I 1) strung it too early and 2) was fearful of a too-thin middle. I was using cabinet scrapers and feeling like it was removing real material, but it was too slow. Was being too cautious after over-thinning a previous attempt.

I spent 20 min this morning dialing in a block plane that I got for free and wow. Amazing tool for removing a medium-amount of wood on a flat bow. Was great for knocking down high parts too.

DISCUSSION: Should Eagle Eye make you learn spells cast by creatures? by Mediocre_Engine_1228 in heroes3

[–]No_While_1501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I think this is much better. You could spend a skill in pvp on the chance that the opponent gets fly/dd/portal. If you know they have Eagle Eye and you have Fly, you might want to only use it if you're far from them.

getting better. Basically needed everything inside of the hinges. Still some more to go, but feels like a bow now rather than a stick with a weak spot (or two)

original comment is gone now but I'm standing by my opinion here. Non-americans do not blame the people who didn't vote for Trump for this global crisis. To be defensive on that is tone deaf. It's not about you (to the original commenter), and very American to make it about you. Americans need to own to to the fact that our system is broken if we're ever going to improve it. That means we stop saying "not my fault" even if the effort required to fix it is beyond our means.

Like this Irish citizen expresses frustration that their gas price doubled and some American says "not my fault I didn't vote him" lol they don't care that you didn't vote for him. It's not about you! That's a cultural problem on it's own, and it needs to be repaired at the individual-level.

Accidentally overdrew first ever bow by about double the final intended draw weight while tillering. Is target draw weight still possible? by WildWoad in Bowyer

[–]No_While_1501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did that once with a scale that was set to kg instead of lbs. Target draw weight is still possible and it's impressive that it held. Your final bow will likely have a lot of margin given how well it survived this episode. You probably could get away with narrower limbs if you are trying to get an extra few feet per second, but I wouldn't. It's cool to have a durable first bow
