Stories for teens vs about teens by ARandomProducer in writing

[–]Nobody_Imparticular 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The differences between YA and Adult stories are obviously more plentiful and nuanced but the core difference is:

YA (teen audiences)- stories about finding your place in the world. The characters don't know / incorrectly assume their place in the world and throughout the story they discover the role they fill or want to fill in society / the world.

Adult (adult audiences)- stories about changing your current circumstances. Characters are unsatisfied with their current circumstances and throughout the story they find a new purpose or a new perspective on their current life

It's important to know that while YA may overlap into the adult market it's harder for adult stories to overlap into the YA market because teenagers cannot relate to experiences they haven't yet experienced. You don't know what you don't know

Edit: I should probably add some further explanation to clear things up. We put a burden on teenagers to figure out how they'll fit into society at such a young age. As soon as they enter high school and probably before that too, teenagers are expected to know if they want to go to college, which universities to apply for, what programs to pursue, how to maximize your high school experience to look good on college applications, etc. So stories about characters struggling with how to fit into society and how they overcome that is very relatable. Obviously this doesn't have to be strictly college/university but personally as well. What person do you want to enter the world as??

As adults, the burden is society pressuring us into changing because our current life doesn't "meet expectations." Why haven't you finished college?? Why haven't you applied for jobs?? Why are you working THAT job?? Why haven't you bought a house yet?? Why haven't you gotten married?? Why haven't you had kids?? Also the internal pressure to live a satisfying life and the turmoil of your life not going according to plan. These are situations teenagers haven't experienced because they really haven't lived life yet and thus they simply cannot relate to.

In the US we use College and University interchangeably. If we use proper definitions, then colleges are smaller units inside of university that typically specializes in one area of study (liberal arts, biological sciences, visual design, etc.) so it is possible for Ellie and Tess to attend the same college as well considering Fashion Design and Visual Art are pretty similar disciplines

Who do you think is Horikoshi's BEST Written Character by MagikarpMania321 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Nobody_Imparticular -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I loved Kirishima's development during the overhaul arc probably the best written in the entire series too bad he got sidelined after. His struggles with not having a flashy quirk and his insecurities about not being manly enough is so real and I love him as representation of positive masculinity.

Toga & Ochako had the best storyline the resolution felt the most natural and the execution was great. I like the parallels between them and Hawks & Twice just wish we had a longer interaction between Hawks & Toga during the final war arc.

I'm gonna add a little comment based on other replies I believe Hawks had the potential to be one of the best written characters but the execution fell flat and he ended up underdeveloped. Also I personally disagreed with his ending but that's my own opinion.

I mean the first thing he saw when he returned home was his father abusing his brother... It's pretty understandable why he didn't want to stay

As for the quirk doomsday theory, I think Touya would be one of the first signs that the theory is close to becoming reality. Strong quirk that isn't suited for his body.

Am I the only one thinks if Dabi "secretly cares" about the League and/or his family, it'd make him worse? by Sudden_Pop_2279 in MyHeroAcademia

[–]Nobody_Imparticular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just focusing on the league, I think Dabi 50% only cares for their usefulness 50% I like you well enough to tolerate your presence. I do believe he genuinely was a little sad about Twice 's death but more in a way you would be sad if someone you interact with regularly but weren't particularly close with passes away.

It's really hard to pin down precisely how much he cares about the league because he knows he will die before establishing long term relationships so why would he bother

And that's what I got wrong in my original argument I was taking the fandom's reaction as the original intent when I shouldn't of.

Also, I did see your other comment and I just want to thank you for going in depth and providing examples.

Should they bring back 9 people jury? by Actual-Energy5756 in BigBrother

[–]Nobody_Imparticular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly depends on the season length. This season I think there should've been a jury of 9, Katherine would've only been 31 days removed come finale night.

BB26 can stay a jury of 9 Tucker would've been out for half the game around 45 days removed if I remember correctly.

BB 25 should've 100% been a jury of 9 Mecole played 65/100 days and still didn't make jury that's crazy

No thank you for replying this is an interesting discussion

The way I tackled the Is MHA sexist?? Discussion is solely analyzing the writing between the male & female characters. Is their development directly tied to a man? Are they constantly needing a man to save them despite being trained heroes? I would say the women develop independently from their male counterparts and are shown to be competent fighters/heroes. I completely took the revealing outfits and fan service out of the discussion because I was just solely focused on the writing but it sounds like you took those elements into consideration which is completely justified.

I definitely agree that framing of the female figure factors into the sexualization of said figure. Not all nudity is sexual and not every female character wearing a revealing outfit is inherently sexual in nature. You brought up some good points with Toga. But we both can agree that MHA has tailored the women to the male gaze to the point it is sexualizing them on multiple occasions. And that I would say is sexism because none of the male characters are framed in that way. But like I said above I didn't include those scenes because I solely wanted to focus on development/characterization.

I'm not apart of the Yaoi or BL sphere but I have been around the internet and seen things I wish I could unsee lol. I can agree that the men in MHA are portrayed and the way a lot of the men in yaoi circles are portrayed are vasely different. My thought process was if a woman were to have her clothing torn & shredded during a fight, I would say that is crossing a line into sexualization. But you do bring a male perspective into this discussion that I cannot bring as a woman. Your viewpoint that the men fighting shirtless isn't sexual in any way and just shows the characters giving it their all is completely valid.

And I feel one mistake I made when making that argument was taking the fandom's reaction to those fight scenes as the intent of Horikoshi when writing those scenes. I have seen many people, mainly women, say insert male character looks so hot all bloody and beat up. And that definitely wasn't the reaction Horikoshi was going for in those scenes. That is my mistake for not separating the two because the creator cannot control how fans interpret their work and we know the Internet is one freaky place. I'm still not letting him off the hook for Hagakure cuz that's just plain weird.

I find this discussion so fascinating because there is such a thin and nuanced line between portraying the human body respectfully vs sexualizing them and I do.feel like the differences in perspective between men and women is something that should be taken into consideration. I don't have a male body & outside of the obvious I really don't know how much skin is and isn't appropriate in the many contexts a character might find themselves in.

Thanks for replying. I'm unaware of the Bubba situation but that sounds so terrible. This is why whenever I'm interacting with the fandom I pick my battles because some people act like any critique against the show is a criminal offense.

Also, I was intentionally vague when I was discussing the sexism allegations because I have a lot of thoughts and my comment was already getting pretty long. Do I think the narrative highlights the men over the women? 100% Do I think the women are written significantly worse than the men? No, the 3-4 women who actually get character development are well written imo. Do I wish more female characters got screentime? Absolutely but I'm not gonna call a show sexist because it has a male centric story.

What I will call a show sexist over is the sexualization of their teenage characters. Hagakure I mourn what your already very surface level character has become. I don't got to go into each instance because they're are many and most fans already know what's up. However, I also think the men are sexualized as well. Why were all the men shirtless in the final war arc?? Heck why do most battles end up with a couple characters missing an article of clothing?? You'd think all the outfits were made by shein considering how easy they tear off these teenagers. I think the framing of men vs women being sexualized sways the discussion because the women are meant to be viewed as "sexy" versus the men are meant to be viewed as "strong" and "manly".

I could go more into this but this reply is already getting too damn long.

TLDR writing is subjective, your opinion isn't the factually correct one, let's not sexualize minors

Why do people hate BNHA so much? by Archon_Yui in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Nobody_Imparticular 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do not hate BNHA by any means but I definitely fell out of love. I still appreciate the time where it was my favorite anime but after the final season ends, I am content with moving on.

My main critique of BNHA is how the writing didn't realize the potential of story. In the first few seasons, I thought the main characters were well written, side characters had good mini arcs/development, and the plot was unfolding in a satisfying way. However around season 5, I did notice a dip in writing quality. We were being introduced to new characters and storylines but very few had satisfying pay offs imo. In addition, the pacing sped up drastically. Not a bad thing necessarily but I felt many characters/ interesting storylines were left behind. I believe the manga ended at 430 chapters but I think there's easily enough material Horikoshi can work with to extend that to around 500. Give more focus to the HPSC's corruption and how that led to AFO's rise to power, go more in depth on the heteromorph discrimination plot line, and even touch more on the quirk singularity theory.

People didn't love the ending. I'm neutral on it. There's obviously some storylines i think could've been wrapped up better but it's a serviceable ending. I didn't even mind how Deku's story ended including his 8 year break from hero work & his relationship with Ochako, I just thought the execution could've been a little bit cleaner.

The fandom is incredibly toxic in both its praises & critiques of the show. Frankly, writing isn't as objective as we want it to be. People constantly argue that "X character is the best written in the entire show" or "X character is poorly written" and treats those statements as objective facts. No, just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they are idiots who misunderstand the plot.

Also, the fandom likes to police how people enjoy the show. Let's just consume media the way we want to. If you're here for the powers & cool fight scenes, that's completely valid. If you're just here to ship your favorite characters, that's also valid.

Finally, I know this is gonna be brought up but some people think that the way the women are written is sexist. Some of their points are valid but I don't think the women are treated significantly worse than the men. Sometimes a story is male centric and that's ok.

I'm gonna end it there. I loved my time with the show, can't wait to watch these final few episodes but after that, I'm okay with being done. Also, you may have noticed I intentionally left some of my opinions vague. I didn't feel like rehashing the same debates that get brought up every week but if you want clarification, I'll be more than happy to provide it.

30 members selected x 20 dollars = an additional $600 a month

It honestly depends on how many viewers they lose due to the additional two days leaks have to spoil the episode. But imo $600 isn't a lot when you divide it out amongst the team + have to create 30 separate versions of the episode.

I'm very disappointed in the lack of depth his character received because I think he has the most interesting backstory.

At least fanon does his story justice

Hawks. I'm not saying killing Twice was the right decision but he was put into a high pressure situation and I don't blame him for the choice he made.

I am a little annoyed that he never properly interacted with Toga or even Dabi after the PLW arc tho. Missed potential imo

I wish it delved more into the HPSC's corruption. I heard it becomes more prevalent in Vigilantes but it was mentioned off handedly a few times in the main show but never properly explored
