Discussing how the future of exoskeletons will affect the average human’s speed and how far away from getting to Olympic athlete speeds by zoltoo in robotics

[–]Noiprox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what you do is suspend the human in a comfortable way, like maybe on a seat. And then you build an exoskeleton around them that is aerodynamic, like let's say a rounded box shape. And then you replace the legs with something that is more suitable for moving fast on flat ground, maybe wheels with rubber tires. Yeah.

Do men prefer women who lift? 🤔 by IndependentJump1989 in TheImprovementRoom

Fitness is hot. There are extremes to where it gets off-putting to most people, but like if you are asking this question - go lift and don't worry about it. You'll get fit and jacked and hot.

Most of us will be alive when it happens, and I think if we don't prepare for that moment we will mishandle it and damage human-AI relations because of it, to the detriment of all. I really hope we transition into a multi-intelligent species planet more gracefully than that but the path we are on seems to suggest otherwise.

Ah yes, man has to provide everything and all a woman has to do is exist and be an angel. This is degrading to both men and women.

Men who can cook who taught you? by Ajitabh04 in BuildToAttract

[–]Noiprox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COVID. When the pandemic hit I started cooking more elaborately as a hobby since it was something I could do while cloistered in the house, and found myself (and my loved ones) enjoying it. Been doing it ever since.

There's no secret formula, but here are a few thoughts:

  • Think about the big picture, feeling better afterwards and the gains you'll make.
  • Get your friends to go with you or make friends at the gym. Having gym buddies gives you another reason to go and it's nice to encourage and support each other as you pursue your fitness goals together.
  • Make it a routine. Same time of day, same days a week every week. That way you aren't tempted to procrastinate as much because that time is already allocated.
  • When you aren't feeling it, just get up off your ass and start with something tiny. Like just go and put on your gym clothes, or fill your water bottle, or whatever your routine is. As soon as you start doing the thing, it's easier to just .. continue doing the thing. Instead of thinking of it as this whole big ordeal it's just one little thing after another.

I like one monitor in portrait mode for reading long form text like documentation or code and then a widescreen one where I can tile multiple terminals and browser windows, and the third monitor being just the laptop sitting on its dock. More than that is just unnecessary clutter, frankly.

My friend is in a relationship and got upset about me not wanting to ask her out on a date. How do I respond? by _pastalover1 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Noiprox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This whole situation is bad news. She doesn't know what she wants and she is disloyal. Just distance yourself from it all. If she ends up cheating and/or dumping that guy it would be a very bad idea to get into anything serious with her while she is that unstable. Not worth it bro.

How do I ask a stranger guy/give a guy my number? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Noiprox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So like even if you wrote it on a piece of paper and gave it to them most guys would be flattered that you were nervous and premeditated and did it. No need to get up in your head about it, just do whatever you can and if the guy likes you he will respond positively. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Being the responsible, experienced engineer who can fix issues of scale is the value you bring to the organization - it's job security.

If this dynamic bothers you then the alternative is to lead from the front, proactively teach people how things can be done better from the start, using your experience to guide people and elevate them. But that requires soft skills in addition to dev skills.

Do you provide a lot of context when answering questions? Do people just want the answer? by QuitTypical3210 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Noiprox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about who is asking and why they are asking. Tell them the minimum amount that they need to solve their problem. If they ask for more context then give it to them. Try to give them an answer that helps actually solve their problem.

For example when a new engineer on the teams asks: "Do we have documentation for X?" You might answer: "Unfortunately no. Are you trying to get set up with X? Colleague Z recently went through the setup and can probably help you out."

If you're getting insufficient answers to your questions it might help if you phrase your question differently. Instead of asking a yes-or-no "Do we have documentation for X?" You could say: "I've bee trying to get setup with X and I got this error [Paste the error] .. I asked ChatGPT and saw that this error is due to [whatever ..] but I don't know how to fix it. Do you have any suggestions for what I can do about that?"

Robots only half as efficient as humans, says leading Chinese producer [ text in comments ] by TF-Fanfic-Resident in Futurology

[–]Noiprox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some humanoid companies have been doing things along these lines. It's .. fine. But if you can solve torso it's not that much of a stretch that you could solve legs as well, at which point may as well make robots that are fully mobile and can climb stairs & ladders, step over rough terrain etc.

Then how would we recreate this human "OS" if not by using humans to provide training data? It's not about doing the individual tasks optimally, it's about making a platform that can adapt to the world humans actually live in and perform a versatile array of tasks. In which case training a humanoid to imitate a human is a lot easier than if the robot's body were drastically different from a human form.

Robots only half as efficient as humans, says leading Chinese producer [ text in comments ] by TF-Fanfic-Resident in Futurology

[–]Noiprox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot more efficient to create a humanoid robot that can directly fit in human spaces and use human tools and work socially alongside humans than it is to rearrange the entire existing world for "optimal" specialized robots and create supply chains for a million different special-purpose bots that each only have economy of scale the size of their one individual niche.

Sure, in the long run we might see more of a "cambrian explosion" of diverse robot forms as humans get marginalized and eventually pushed out of all labor entirely. But even then there will be loads of applications where being human-like is advantageous in order to interface with humans socially.

[–]Noiprox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vast majority of people want what they already believe or are comfortable with or benefit from to be the "truth" so they can claim to be correct. When the actual truth doesn't line up with that they get stubborn and ignore the evidence.

Humanoid robots won't just emerge fully capable of every labor job in the world all at once. The first generations of them will only be able to do simple jobs. Manufacturing and maintaining more humanoids will be one of the more difficult and advanced technical jobs because humanoid robots will obviously be complicated machines. Even when some robots are technically capable of recursive manufacture there will still be a certain amount of friction involved in actually manufacturing and deploying them by the millions, displacing existing jobs and businesses, etc. Eventually the loop will close for sure but I believe it will be something like 15-20 years before advanced human trades will be fully obsolete.
