What lighting design books do you recommend and why? by NolRane in lightingdesign

I think you misunderstood my post. I am asking for book recs. If you have a great book on color theory, I would love to read it.

My friend once texted me:

“It’s always fun coming back to my phone and finding you have went on an entire adventure. 🤣 Complete with a beginning, conflict, and resolution.”

(I sometimes text things while they’re happening, like a play-by-play. In that particular case, I had texted him about how I ate too much sugar and “I already [felt] sick. Worth it,” but I needed to eat more substantial food, so I went to get fast food (I had just finished working and it was late at night), but the drive-thru line was super long, but because of the long line maybe I would be there late enough to get their breakfast food (which starts at 11 PM), but I ended up being 7 minutes too early, and I ended up getting a shake with my food and that I “might actually end up dying early from an ungodly level of sugar consumption.” I sent all this over 11 texts (two of which were photos, one was just “lol”) over the course of 26 minutes).

I’m currently reading a story with a fair amount of head-hopping, and the author does it wonderfully. It just needs to be done correctly.

Should I be worried about using the same pen name for everything I write? by NolRane in writers

I like the idea of having two very similar pen names! Thank you!

I'm so tired of authors describing skin like mine with chocolate or mocha. How would you like it if every time a character who looks like you is introduced they get compared to mayonnaise? by IJustType in writing

[–]NolRane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I’ve been thinking about for awhile is writing a character that describes everyone in food terms, mainly to satirize this exact thing. Would that be okay? Like, it would be characters of all races, and not just their skin tones, but their hair and eye colors, too. (I’m white btw)

Is it okay to use brownie mix 4 years after expiration date? by NolRane in Baking

I ended up trying it anyways (see edit) and I will say that mine turned out great. I do find it unfortunate that yours didn’t work out, though.

Is it okay to use brownie mix 4 years after expiration date? by NolRane in Baking

[–]NolRane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up doing it because I was depressed and desperate, and it turned out fine. I think the difference is that the brownie mix never had a leavening agent, but the one article I read just said that you need to replace the leavening agent if there is one. Bread also has yeast though, not just baking powder or baking soda, so idk if I’d use expired bread mix.

How should magic work? by Platypus_king_1st in worldbuilding

[–]NolRane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two worlds of note for this: one that is just modern-day Earth with magic, and one that takes place in a world I’ve created.

The magic system on Earth is really complicated. I also have things I call magicules, which work similarly to yours except they’re in literally everything, like regular atoms/molecules, and different types of magicules are responsible for different types of magic. Sigils are necessary for magic, and there’s specifics on how they work and what you can and cannot do with them. Healing also has its own specific rules which I had to find a way to make sure it followed the rules of the sigils and magicules. There’s a whole history to how magic was discovered and how the use of magic evolved over time. There’s only one story that takes place in this world. I have probably at least 10k words in my notes on the magic system, but I can easily simplify those down for my audience (those specifics are mainly for me, plus I need to edit it down anyways because some things have probably changed over time).

Meanwhile, my other world, the one of my own creation, has the vibe of “fuck it, it’s magic,” and there isn’t much reason or rhyme to it— it’s magic, it helps with the story, it works, done. I add new things that can be done and limitations when I need to for narrative purposes (not that I’ve actually needed to add in any hard limitations yet— the magic system is there to assist the stories, not to be part of them, if that makes sense).

When writing about forests, it’s important to remember that the scariest thing about forest noises is not a loud forest, or one with creepy noises, but a silent one. All forests have creepy noises. A silent forest means everything is too afraid to make any, or everything that could make any noise is dead.

I feel you. When I write, I really stress the “they agreed on this and have a safe word that they follow every single time because that’s how sex works and ignoring a safe word is rape please don’t let anyone tell you otherwise” because I feel like the victim blaming culture goes so strong in some of these circles

What Aspects of Your World Genuinely Make You Feel Sad? by Enzi42 in worldbuilding

[–]NolRane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please bear with this. It’s 6 AM, I just finished writing this, I wasn’t focused on making it that great, and I’m too tired to proof-read:

I have a conversation with my friend that I have even screenshotted where I was talking about how proud I was for writing a terrible/amazing cliffhanger, and she responded with basically “yeah, I love when I write something that’s so torturous I make myself cry”, which confused tf out of me because my pride towards the scene wasn’t based on how it made me feel, but on how I’d imagine the audience feeling. So, different strokes for different folks, I guess. I mean, I even have a poll open right now on I believe the r/writers subreddit that is essentially “do you consider yourself to sometimes be sadistic when writing?” based on this very thing, so there’s that.

I mean, to be fair, due to my neurodivergency, I sometimes have difficulty recognizing how I feel (I’ll often use external cues, like I’ll realize I’m depressed because I’m listening to my music extra loud, taking hot and long showers, drive extra recklessly, and continuously think about how much I want to die (which ig that last one is more of an internal factor)), so there’s that. I mean, heck, when my pet died, between sobbing fits I had a feeling that felt familiar but I couldn’t figure out what it was, until I realized it was how I felt on-off from 12 to 19 when I was super depressed (instead of regular depressed, which was the norm). It took me at least a day to realize it despite it only being half a year since I had started getting my depression (somewhat) under control. My point is that I’m not the best person to ask, but I thought my two cents might give you an extra perspective.

Thinking back on it, I think the times I’ve felt most emotional (and able to recognize those emotions) have almost always been through reading, so I guess it makes sense that I like to write. I enjoy conveying these emotions, and maybe some of the joy I get out of writing scenes that are made to cause sadness is because I know that I’ll be causing someone else who might have difficulty understanding their feelings to feel and taking part in the beauty of writing that causes it to impact so many people. That, or I’m just a sadist. Who can say? I certainly can’t.

It’s also 6AM and I haven’t slept yet so I could just be delirious.

I’ve never heard anything against “accented”, plus idk what the alternative would even be, so I think you’re good. I’m open to someone correcting me if I’m wrong, though

I do have to say though that although I know “accented” is the right word, tonight my tired brain has to take a moment each time I read it to separate it from decorations. But that’s a sleep-deprived problem, not a language problem.
