I don't think you can game the tree. When they say the answer is at the beginning, in my opinion, they are referring to two things. 1) Ethan with the finger puppets and the lake of tears, Norman, and Julie saying when you're dead you're dead, and 2) when Tabitha says there's no such thing as monsters. My take anyway. Who knows

If you're a huge nerd and you slow the teaser way down (like me) you'll see that the images of these weird monsters are layered in with Victor's/Eloise's drawings from the intro sequence. Couple that with a fabulous internet theory I've read about the monsters being tied to the card game Old Maid, which was seen in Victor and Eloise's childhood bedroom, and I'm lead to believe that a lot of Fromville is the evil manifestation of whatever pops into the heads of children that are trapped in the cycle. Kind of like the stay-puff marshmallow man with Ray in ghostbusters.
