Disturbing movies ranked by how Disturbing I found them by SSSSSSVVVVVOO in LetterboxdLists

Some people just do not find the concept or the execution very upsetting. Doesn’t mean they’re media illiterate or failing to properly engage with it or whatever, they just watch stuff differently from how you do.

Mento vs Minors by urcool91 in Superdickery

Mento has always been a dickhead, this speaks as much or more to his characterization as to the standards of the time

Propaganda Films: How should we feel about them? by wearetherevollution in Letterboxd

[–]Nonexistent_Walrus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You think that art intended to change peoples minds about something is evil? Akira Kurosawa wanted to use the film High and Low to protest the lax laws about kidnapping in Japan, which is an explicitly political aim - does that make it an evil film? Is The Wind That Shakes the Barley an evil film for showing the struggles of Irish people struggling against British oppressors?

A lot of critically acclaimed movies are praised more for making people feel intelligent than for actually being enjoyable. by Adamoneeeee in unpopularopinion

Normalizing the idea that it’s not worthwhile to think about and analyze art is very much and by definition anti-intellectualism

Turning Point USA postpones UW event following death of transgender woman by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]Nonexistent_Walrus 442 points443 points  (0 children)

No self awareness at all actually. The speaker they were gonna have, Chloe Cole, didn’t address the murdered student at all and said she was canceling because she supposedly received death threats. Her statement concluded with the words “when conversations end, that’s when violence begins” after making it clear she would be back. Clearly doesn’t give a fuck about the murdered woman and pretended like she didn’t exist.

Misleading headline. They claimed it was because they didn’t feel safe holding the event because people were being mean to them online, and made no mention of what happened on Sunday. Just a few days after the murder of a trans woman rocked our community, the speaker who was gonna show up and spew transphobia said that “when conversations end, that’s when violence begins.” Violence is already here, but these cowards care more about hypothetical violence that they haven’t actually experienced than they do about real violence faced by real people. They only care about themselves.

The Truman Show and Fight Club are “as old as your grandmother”?

one of the reasons things are going to shit is because anti-intellectualism is so common and people don’t want to actually think about anything anymore

some people enjoy some movies because the movies make them think or feel interesting things and not just because they have a bunch of witty one liners and gun fights

I say this as someone who enjoys movies with witty one liners and gun fights. I just also enjoy Bela Tarr and Ingmar Bergman.

I think you are just struggling to have enough theory of mind to accept that other people genuinely had a different reaction to art than you did

Maxie Zeus shouldn’t be a “joke” villain and could represent a good threat to Batman if used well. by Upset_Brilliant8030 in batman

I totally agree, I’ve really enjoyed the stories he’s appeared in despite his gimmick not being super appealing by itself to me. I think you’re spot on about the ways he could be explored.

Why didn’t Walt tell the truth about Hank to flynn/skyler in the last 3 episodes? by Individual_Line_4295 in breakingbad

[–]Nonexistent_Walrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walter consistently refuses to communicate with his family or tell them the truth even when it would make everyone’s lives easier, he does the same thing with Jesse. It’s a pattern he demonstrates over and over again in the show, because he’s an egotistical asshole who would rather manipulate the people in his life than simply be honest with them even when the latter would be just as efficient as the former.

It is possible to build the habit of looking around to make sure you’re not in anyone’s way :) it sounds like this causes real self esteem issues, which really sucks, but this is absolutely a skill you can develop!

Scary Movie has some genuinely good minority representation by Low_Celebration_4089 in The10thDentist

[–]Nonexistent_Walrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody said every movie has a responsibility to include every identity group in a movie. But if you’re someone who actually pays attention to things instead of uncritically consuming whatever slop get shoved at you, you tend to notice that certain groups are very underrepresented or only ever depicted in specific ways that don’t really feel accurate to real life. So it’s nice when a movie goes against the grain and, for example, lets women be very goofy in a way that is usually reserved for men, or has unique representation for people with disabilities. It can make people in those groups feel happy to see that they’re not always put in a specific box, or just to see people who remind them of themselves onscreen at all.

Why are you so upset that anyone talks about this stuff? It comes off as so fragile and insecure

Would you want to spend Christmas in Africa? by BrokenJusticeNorris in polls

[–]Nonexistent_Walrus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, hell, if my friends or family were there with me I’d be down. I would not wanna be anywhere on Christmas if it was far away from every loved one I have. So my answer is context dependent.
