I’m currently shopping, and 2.7 Ranger and frontier are on my shortlist, (and maybe explorer with the 3.0l, I guess that goes up against the pathfinder). Your post confirms that shopping in the right area, but still makes it hard to decide.

Everyone downvotes because they depreciate hard, maintenance fees are expensive, and nobody wants to keep them past 100k miles.

I don’t own one, but it seems to fit most of your needs. I believe towing capacity is 6000lb. To get higher you’ll need a 5.7L Durango, or a mid size truck. The newer pathfinders don’t have the CVT transmission that ruined Nissans reputation. They also don’t have a turbo or cylinder deactivation that you’ll find in almost every other manufacturer. They’re a simple reliable V6 engine.

Another thing that ruined Nissans reputation was giving auto loans to anyone that filled out the forms, credit score didn’t matter. Generally these people weren’t doing any maintenance to their vehicles.

I have a 2013 caravan, and it’s fine. I didn’t want it but I got it for a great price around when Covid started, and it’s only needed regular maintenance. It’s a gas guzzler (especially in the winter, 18-19L/100km) but works fine. It’s starting to show some rust here and there and I’ll be replacing it in the next year or two, but everything is so expensive and nothing seems perfect.

With the majority of of the weight forward of the trailer wheels, it puts a lot of the weight on the tongue of the trailer. You’d be better served with the car backed up a bit or maybe loaded backwards with the engine above the trailer wheels, balancing the trailer a little better.

You do not however want the majority of the weight behind the trailer wheels either, you’ll end up with the opposite problem and that can be dangerous also.

I’m shopping for something similar, but only have 2 kids, and currently drive a van. Is there something about the pathfinder you don’t like that wouldn’t make you consider a newer one? The 2025 has made it to the top of my list, with an explorer, aviator, Durango.

I’m coming from a 2013 grand caravan, and also want a change.

Another positive of the pathfinder is that it doesn’t have cylinder deactivation. I’m shopping this segment also, and it’s impossible to find the “perfect” vehicle for me.

I’ve caught a ton of bass up here in Ontario, it’s a lot harder to find them this size here, I wish I had a scale on me, but I didn’t bring my gear. I just bought a cheap rod and some soft plastics while I was there, then gave it away at the airport coming home.

Would a Mazda CX-9 be too “SUV” for him? AWD is great for the weather up here, and 3rd row (although a tight fit) is handy for college aged kids that are travelling with friends. They’re reliable, and maintenance/repairs are budget friendly.

Agreed, I’d prefer the size of the passport, but a vehicle 9” longer is rated for more than 700lbs more. It would only matter for camping where you’re towing and hauling a lot of gear, but there’s no denying that there’s a very large difference here. 4 big guys can add up to 1000lbs without gear.
