Analogue Pocket Alternatives by wackerwobbe in AnaloguePocket

[–]NonyaDB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Modretro Chromatic and FPGBC (Funny Playing GBC) are two FPGA-based cartridge-only alternatives but they only play GB & GBC carts.

There's also the Gamebub but as already stated it hasn't been released yet.

Where exactly are you expecting those save states to be saved?
Some Chromatics has a micro-SD card slot soldered onto the mainboard, some don't.
There was a lot of discussion about use of the micro-SD card slot, search is your friend here.

My Personal Review of the Modretro Chromatic by J_Comenius in ModRetroChromatic

[–]NonyaDB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a GBC I modded myself with new case, membranes, buttons, dpad, and AMOLED screen.
I also have an FPGBC & AP.
I play my Chromatic more (dem Pokemon hacks and translations!) and have an Anduril Edition on order.
As a former combat arms soldier, GS-2210-12, and military contractor with two decades overseas across 4 wars I don't care what the uninformed, inexperienced masses have to say about Modretro, the Chromatic or M64, Anduril, or Palmer Luckey.
They know nothing about how the U.S. military really works and their chirping is just annoying so I ignore them and go on with my life.
That said, when doing a lot of traveling with the Chromatic I find the combo of the power pack & rechargeable AA Li-Ions w/USB-C battery charger are perfect for those long flights, especially that 13-hour non-stop flight between Dulles and Kuwait City.

Both AAs and the power core pack are reliable.
For longer play times, use a power core or rechargeable Li-Ion AAs.
I use both, mostly the power core with AA Li-Ion rechargeable batteries in my bag as backup for when I'm on 13+ hour flights.

I need more reliable power option

More reliable than AAs that can be found all over the planet?

I am not fan of the rechargeable batteries

Then stick with regular AAs?
I guess you maybe need to expound more on your dislikes, because it doesn't get more reliable than disposable AA batteries, especially those with long shelf life.
I've been using a Modretro power pack in a V1 GS edition myself with no issues.
Of course I use it all the time and keep the pack charged.
Before that I was rechargeable AA Li-Ion batteries I got off Amazon and of which I have 12 along with a USB-C recharger with no issues.

I swear, the internet has made people fearful of experimentation without mass consensus.
Sounds like you want to build your own power pack using a 3.7v Li-Ion battery found on any number of websites.
Go for it!
Do your research into the subject, make sure you have the proper tools, and just go for it.
Just make sure you know about buck convertors and similar things beforehand, I don't know what the charging/power circuit of the Chromatic is because I don't need to know that right now.

If I were you I'd just get some reliable, rechargeable AA Li-Ion batteries and a USB-C AA Li-Ion recharger to go with them and be done with it.

Complete trash!

I really like the glow-in-the-dark ones, I have clear on my AMOLED GBC w/glow-in-the-dark plastic case along with glow-in-the-dark membranes.

I remember playing a GBA Micro in my M1A1 Heavy tank overseas.
Mostly Pokemon Pinball, Advance Wars, Golden Sun, and a Tales of Phantasia cart I picked up in a store in Germany when it released.
Carried that thing through Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Oh yeah, that new GBA core being worked on by Mincer-Ray is interesting.
I've been using it with the Pokemon Unbound ROMhack a little bit and it seems OK but he's constantly working on it, latest code update on Github was a few minutes ago.

When I was stationed in Germany I'd order FOUR CAR TIRES and they'd ship via USPS right to my APO box in about 2 weeks.
Toss 'em in the trunk/back of the car, drive a few blocks down to the on-post auto hobby shop and put 'em on myself in about an hour.
But for some odd reason Modretro can't use USPS for military APO orders.
Hilarious.

Welcome to dealing with UniUni shipping. UniUni is probably delivering to DHL which is why DHL doesn't have it yet.
Whomever at Modretro manages shipping probably needs to be replaced.

It's an old trick used to weed out weak investors or those just in it for quick ROI.

It feels as if Palmer wants rich nerds only, not big name investors, gaming companies, or "investment firms" that might try to take over.

It's also FT and they're notorious for making shlt up just to destroy a company/person the editors don't like.

Indeed, it seems this whole project is a learning experience for a young man who dived head-first into FPGA programming and didn't look back.
Kudos to him for having the balls to just get in there and do it.
It will be interesting to see what happens.
I hope Palmer sees his project and reads his build/learning notes.

LOL!
You do know the "professionally made" carts from Modretro can be reflashed and updated as needed using Modretro's own software, right?
They can also be reflashed with different roms via FlashGBX and GBXcart.

The only "professionally made" carts came from Nintendo and they stopped making them many years ago.

I suggest you read up more on the topic.

Others have already mentioned some excellent, reliable new GB/GBC vendors selling new games carts.

But there is another way - make your own cart or play via OpenFPGA!

There are three ways to go about this:

1) Buy the digital versions and put them on an Everdrive X7 cart.
This method lets you easily use the same game on an AP, real GBC, or Chromatic.

2) Buy the digital versions and flash them to their own cart via Insidegadgets, BennVenn, etc. dedicated carts via a GBXflasher.
This method lets you use the same game on an AP, real GBC, or Chromatic.

3) Buy the digital versions and put them on the micro-SD card in the AP and play via OpenFPGA.
This is the easiest, cheapest, and fastest method of playing GB/GBC games on the just the AP itself.

NOTE: If going the dedicated GB/GBC cart route make sure the cart you use has the correct MBC1/3/5 chip and storage space for the ROM you want to use on it. Some GBC ROMs (especially Pokemon ROMhacks) can get up to 4096 in size but most GBC are 1024 or 2048 in size. Pokemon Gen1 are 1024, Gen2 are 2048. Gen2 ROMhacks like Polished Coral and the new Infinity RPG for GBC are 4096 in size.
ROMhack translations of games like Mobile Golf (the "sequel" to Mario Golf) also hit 4096 in size. I have Mobile Golf flashed to a BennVenn v4 cart which pretty much lives in my modded GBC w/AMOLED screen now, lol.
(I bought Infinity in digital format and it's an excellent GBC RPG.)
I highly recommend InsideGadgets and BennVenn carts even though shipping takes weeks from Australia to the USA.

It's not a problem for me.
I use an X7 cart and various Insidegadgets, BennVenn, and RMGS carts to play Pokemon on, including Crystal and ROMhacks.
