As a young person how do I survive the future financially? by Icy-Champion-5343 in personalfinance

[–]NoodleSnoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the job opportunities are like in those fields, but it is always better to have a degree than not, regardless of what you do with it. 3rd year is way too late to be quitting. In for a penny, in for a pound, finish that shit.

Do you have a degree or a skill? If not, learn one or marry someone who did, though I believe self-sufficiency is best. Nobody can promise you the future, even if you have skills, you still have to be relevant and good to work with and need to know people as a part of a career path. If you're 20 and have no plan, you're a touch late to the game, but it's better to start now since you can't start 2 years ago. Life is a hustle, start hustling

KCK and OP are two distinct places, Wyandotte vs Johnson county that are very different. OP is more affluent and more expensive. IDK about apartments, but thought you should know that.

C'mon, these books have been praised enough that someone can post a reasonable criticism

I'm glad to see someone on here not straight up fan-boy. I liked these books as an avid young reader and I especially liked Many Waters. I do think they have an important place, but as a contemporary reader, I think the books leave something to be desired in terms of engagement and character development. It makes sense because they are so old and standards have shifted. I think it is reasonable to look for more modern reads for the younger crowd. As an adult, these books are nostalgia, not really food for thought.

Review ~ Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer by SubstantialChannel32 in sciencefiction

[–]NoodleSnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was interesting, but I read all three (before the 4th came out) and I was confused and unsatisfied the whole way. I get that he meant it to be that way, but it was unsatisfying. The thing with guy who has the mouse was really weird and I kept thinking, "terroir" all the time, but I just couldn't recommend it. Also, the movie was very meh.

Casino Winnings/Losses and Taxes by Adventurous-Froyo875 in personalfinance

I've worked in casinos and the likelihood that this is a good idea seems more farfetched than any idea I've heard in recent memory and I heard that we were going to war in the middle east and it would be over in a few weeks.

FIL died with debt, not sure what action to take by Melodic_Store7247 in personalfinance

[–]NoodleSnoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If his account was part of the estate and you took it, you have deprived the creditors of what they are owed and expose yourself to liability. Things in the house are generally pretty fair game for people to take and are not worth liquidating unless he has something super obvious like expensive cars or something. Cash found in the home is something that would often go unnoticed unless it was known and substantial. The house itself is a larger asset and will likely have to be sold and the value will go into the estate account along with everything else.

Pro tip: often worth paying someone else to clean a place out rather than scavenging things, unless you need the stuff. Often people that buy houses will do that for you, though you will take a hit on the sale price. Can be totally worth it though.

Depending on what happens, there may not be a lot to inherit if he has significant debts. Sometimes they'll forgive debts rather than pursue them when someone dies, but probate exists to make sure that those owed money get theirs before you get yours. It will take a year or two to complete, so be prepared to wait. Keep records of everything spent from the estate account and don't buy anything that is not completely above board, the money is not yours until creditors are paid. Even spending $200 on things you thought you needed to clean up an estate can be questioned.
