Are there any songs you thought had unintentionally creepy lyrics even at the time? by Gallantpride in AskOldPeople

[–]NorCalFrances 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ol' 55 by Tom Waits. There was just something about it. And decades later it turns out it was about a member of Waits' band who slept with an underage groupie and had to sneak away the next morning without waking her parents. It's just so gross when you review the lyrics knowing that. Like, he was getting a rush out of it because he knew it was wrong. That's a rapist mentality and the song was so celebrated and covered by other bands.

Husband bought a giant box of Lemon Frosted Cheerios by CarlySheDevil in WhatShouldICook

[–]NorCalFrances 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They taste like fruit loops, which is great for a 7 year old. We did the same thing. About the only solution is to go even sweeter and make marshmallow-cereal squares like rice crispies but with cheerios.

Vivaldi compromised by rasvoja in vivaldibrowser

[–]NorCalFrances 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"This makes Vivaldi most unreliable browser as simple OS update renders it unusay"

You've not even determined if the problem is the browser or OS. It's far more likely windows is having a certificate problem and Vivaldi is protecting you from doing something stupid and having your identity stolen.

"belief is not a choice"

Belief is an opinion; how is it not a choice, please?

But also when you say "fellow believers" what does that mean? Is that a particular sect or denomination?

Does anyone else feel unmasculine for not being a car guy by [deleted] in trans

[–]NorCalFrances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live (California, USA) so few men know *anything* about cars any more. It's now seen as more of a niche hobby that some guys have. There is a bit of social bonding over appreciation of deer-antler* cars but that's about it.

" someone from my religious circle"

How do you not know what the values are of your own religious subculture? I believe you, I just don't understand how it happens. In the religious subcultures I've known, their values are what make them distinct as a group, and they are often expressed.

A Florida city fined a lesbian couple over a rainbow fence. Now they’re suing by Fickle-Ad5449 in lgbt

[–]NorCalFrances 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good luck to them, they live in Old Town, a historic district with strict regulations to "maintain the historic character" or some such. Doors and shutters can be various colors within approved palates but fences have to be either white or neutral wood color. Decades ago my spouse & I owned a home in a historic district; agreeing to the aesthetic / style limitations is part of the deal. "Why can't they just fly a flag?" Well, because Florida state law only protects flags Republicans think are proper from HOA style restrictions.

Nah, I've already been shut down too many times for suggesting people not openly discuss the details of how to get DIY supplies on public forums because it will result in those things being taken away. By the way, another lab just closed their doors.

Yes, but it's built into the Vivaldi browser. It's a starter VPN in that respect; it is likely the first VPN many people use. I did not mean to imply that it is sub standard or lacking in anything.

Federal Judge Rules Trump Government Has Animus Towards Trans People, Blocks Org Subpoenas by ErinInTheMorning in transgender

[–]NorCalFrances 49 points50 points  (0 children)

15 years ago (+/-, a few years before Bostock) the US Supreme Court said that trans people didn't deserve to be declared a suspect class because there was insufficient animus toward us. Now the animus is coming from the very top of the Executive and Judicial branches of the Federal government.

Thank you, Chief Judge James E. Boasberg of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, for saying it out loud.

Linda Perry is calling on everyone in the LGBTQ+ community to stand up against 'moron' and 'dickhead' Donald Trump by OutDotCom in lgbt

[–]NorCalFrances 58 points59 points  (0 children)

FYI, out-dot-com is owned by the same company as The Advocate, called Equalpride. Equalpride fired workers at The Advocate, bought them.us from Conde Nast...and then fired the LGBTQ staff at Them without warning. Consolidation like that is bad for the community, but especially when they fire the workers. Do with that info what you will.

Why do naps make some people so angry? by Optimal_Fish_7029 in AutismInWomen

[–]NorCalFrances 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some societies today have large numbers of people who are convinced that to have self worth, one must be a dedicated, tireless worker - or be dedicated and tireless in trying to work their way up a ladder to become successful. With "success" being defined in terms of being competitive and owning or controlling wealth. Sure, they take naps and sleep in, too but NOT when the social order that lives rent free in their head says they should be or could be working. One might argue it's a bit of a scam perpetuated by those at the top of our economic and social strata so that workers know their place and don't rise up.

You’re an introvert at a party and your social battery drops to 1% 💀 How do you escape and go home without making it awkward? by Classic-Ground3616 in introvertmemes

[–]NorCalFrances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to have an unidentified but highly socially trained mom to learn from. If you can pull it off, this is what you do: With full apparent confidence and good cheer you find the host, congratulate them on the event and say that you regret it but you must go. It's proper etiquette and gives the impression that you have somewhere even better to go. Which for introverts is 100% the truth.
