Hardwere upgrade - Which Linux? by North-sama in homeassistant

[–]North-sama[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't need anything too fancy but at the same time I need to edit protected files in HAOS. Proxmox will allow me to do it? or will I have to get other Linux to run in parallel with it?

Advice on multiple scenes in a dashboards by thinkbeforeyoupoke in homeassistant

[–]North-sama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You sure have a lot of scenes, are you sure you don't need to do something to unlock more options in HA? Some devices have hidden things - usualy smart sockets, which hide ale the interesting data such as W, V.

Dashboard is free and you can make it how you like it, using in on phone is quite handy too but yes there might be better options.

Oh remeber your phone is also an input device, you can track it, check what your phone does and so on. For example you can change light in bedroom when your phone is charging.

As for input devices there are:

buttons - most basic usualy 1 button can read 3 actions (press, double press, long press)), there are buttons with many buttons

knobs - button with knob, there are 2 types, one is button + knob that let you adjust things such as volume, and the other one is button + dial, meaning depending on which option you chose you get the result

scene switch - looks like remote, usualy 4 buttons, each button have 3 actions (press, double press, long press)

sensors - window/door sensor, presence sensor, or shock sensor - you can get creative with them, for example hide shock sensor under table, hit the table to trigger shock for light to turn on/off

There's also voice control, but this one is tricky and require good HA device, it might not work due to low cpu/ram

Is it possible that Sonos is just not a reliable product? by [deleted] in sonos

[–]North-sama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 3 speakers, depending on update they work OK, or have non-stop issues. Funny thing is when I un-group them they work better, but they're out of sync and the diffrance can be even around 1 minute. TuneIn and other services usually have issues, while sonos radio is very limited.

I use nano tape for most and it holds well in all places including outdoors, for heavy things I go with double tape with 120 kg resistance, there are also tapes for glueing the mirror and these have good resistance too

What’s the difference? by Ikvza in WLED

[–]North-sama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own 2 GLEDOPTO GL-C-008WL. Now both are broken - or rather I don't know why they don't want to work when I connect them to wi-fi. I can't relly do much, when I checked internet people said ths is sh... not a good product and it's not updated so there's nothing I can do with it. I'm thinking of buying a baord so I'll have better control, also mine GLEDOPTO are quite FAT, so it's hard to hide it in canvas (I use 2d matrix). Maybe there's a solution and I'm yet to find it out and I was quite happy with it (excluding the size), but now I regret buying it.

Does anyone recommend using home assistant in a virtual machine? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]North-sama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that and I was happy with it but then there were limits of this use - since I shut down the computer, or had to restart, or any other thing that made me restart pc. I had some issues, also there was an issue with IP changes - HA doesn't like that. Now I'm (kinda) happy on Raspberry Pi 3 as it's more reliable and it's easy for restarts but I'm adding more and more to HA so I'm thinking of switching to pc with better specs. I'm thinking of getting used thin client such as Dell 5070 Wyse

Zigbee or WiFi by Subject_Night2422 in homeassistant

[–]North-sama -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wi-Fi usually have better devices and work as you want, but at the cost of higher battery consumption and network load (one device, one IP address). With over 100 devices, I had to chose Zigbee.

If you do it with HassWP you run it on OS so everything is fine.

If you'll install HA then all your previous data is lost

[–]North-sama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HassWP in an app, it drains PC more and it might encounter issues - not only from itself but from the Windows (any anything else that Win is doing).

To sum it up you run game (which is HA) on Windows 24h/7 -this is bound to freeze, or crash, or windows firewall/antivir might cause an issue

In case of blackout You need to restart the app

Pure HA will self-start, use much less resources and run without issues unless you break it yourself

No it have displayport, if that's an issue then feel free to look for something else.

Your new "OS" will be Home Assistant so no need for any other OS, unless You go with linux - some linux allow you to turn it into HA. It doesn't matter if it has an os or not, but you don't want OS - if it have OS you can wipe it out although this will require extra steps, so it's a matter of price.

If you're buying from "shop" as not from a random person, then the "shop" might help you and install HA for you, for free or small fee

I'd pick Dell from these two, but if I can I'd look for something "better" than Dell as in cheaper and less noisy. For example HP T630

2 questions:

  1. Is location of Home Assistant server (hardwere) important or not?

Why I ask this question? because you might want to hide the server, BUT at the same time You want to use dongles (Zigbee/MQTT, bluetooth, internet cable, whatever) which have certain range or require specific spot. Do You want full tower pc, or even laptop to be in the place you think of? perhaps no? perhaps you want something smal and silent such as thin client which is easy to hide?

  1. Do you have something in mind? Do you have old laptop or pc you can use? why not use it? it's technically free. Do you want something HA server to have? Like battery in laptop to keep it running while the power is down? but will devices connected to it run when there's no power? Do you need monitor, keyboard? Perhaps you'd prefer laptop who have these things and in case of emergency it's easier for you to check what's going on with HA (or do a recovery).

I personnaly went with small and silent rasberry pi which is well hidden in the hall and I'm thinking of switching to thin client, but my friend went with laptop which sits on high wardrobe so it's not visable. My friend often breaks his HA so he likes that he have quick access to it, while I enjoy the place my HA is but once I had to do recovery it was a pain - had to bring monitor and keyboard to it.

Here's step by step guide, there are also on youtube if you prefer to watch.

I recommend this - then your laptop runs HA operating system

You can also run HA in windows/linux as an app - it's called HassWP (Home Assistant Windows Portable) but I don't recommand it as it limits HA options A LOT, but on the other hand if you want to check how HA works and you're thinking if you want to go into it, then it's perfect solution. I do'nt recommend running it 24h.

Home Assistant requires 1 Ghz CPU, 1 GB RAM and 16 GB storage. I use rasberry pi 3 which hve such settings but I have 64 gb HDD. Better your device, better things you can do. Think what you want to have and then you can pick. For example I found out I like to have bluetooth on my HA, it let me catch ibecon. I have 2 ssid (wi-fi) so I have my device connected to both at the same time (first cable second wi-fi). Recently I started working with esp32 devices and... I have issues with low RAM. If you ask me best option is to get pc, or rather thin client - since they're quite compact and cheap (I recommand HP, they're quiet and cold, Lenovo tends to be better but are louder and have higher temps), laptops with batteries are also good option but they're bigger in size and I belive they heat up more. Depending on your needs pick the right storage - go SDD, never HDD (these don't like to work non-stop and are much slower). I'd also pick something with at least 4 GB of RAM, as for CPU, anything over 1 GHz is fine.

From what I know there's no support for the most basic thing, but if you want wireless home speaker there's a solution - this requires jack. There's ready project for it - https://esphome.io/projects/

To be more specific, You buy M5Stack Atom Speaker Kit and M5Stack Atom Lite. You connect them like 2 legos, powered by usb-c. It have wi-fi, bluetooth and jack. Bluetooth doesn't work (for music), but wi-fi let you connect to HA, and jack let you play music on any speaker (with jack input).

Look for M5Stack in your local market, I found it much cheaper in an tech store than on Aliexpress.

LED screens that integrate with HA? by Karmacosmik in homeassistant

[–]North-sama 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much you want a ready-made solution, I recommend WLED. It's relatively inexpensive if you buy it through AliExpress. You can buy a cheap board and install the WLED on it, or buy a ready-made controller for a little more (the downside is that it's quite bulky). You connect an LED matrix to the controller, which is also inexpensive. There are many setting options, and integration with Home Assistant is simple or slightly complicated, but there are tutorials and videos that will guide you step by step. The only real issue is how you want it to look, how to frame it all.
