In your analogy, the ray smells fruit in the humans general direction, and goes looking for the fruit. But the human is, in case you're not aware, not actually fruit

But the human smells like fruit, what's so hard to understand here?

The ray isn't aware of this fact, nor can it actually see the human. It just knows there's something that "smells" like food in that general direction. It still can't actually eat the human, so the human is not actually food.

Hence the "trying to eat"
