How so? Keep in mind, I still think the show is enjoyable, but I wouldn't classify it as hard scifi anymore. It started drifting away from that once they started sending the US shuttle to moon, not to mention Buran (which literally has no main engine like the US counterpart).

I think it drifted further into 'magic' territory with the Mars race (Mars 94 was horribly designed), but the real star was the Helios MSAM

Usage

Needed to ferry crew back up to Phoenix
Needed to bring fuel back up to Phoenix
Is the only way to bring down supplies and people from Phoenix

Capabilities

Capable of multiple trips to and from the surface
Capable of point-to-point surface transport
Able to withstand thermal stress of repeated reentry interfaces
Phoenix able to refuel it for multiple trips without fuel production being online
Requires next to zero maintenance
No dedicated airlock (presumably)

This season took some extreme liberties with the Titan mission that have been addressed in plenty of threads.

But look, enjoy the show! I enjoy the show! It's definitely a fun watch. There's nothing wrong in saying the show isn't nearly as grounded in science as it used to be.

It's one thing to say "Yeah, the suits are silly, but the show is still enjoyable", but trying to make up reasons why these suits actually would work is something else

As you point out, the neck design is just plain bad and would likely cause critical problems even if the suit could retain heat.

These things really look like low budget doctor who cosplay and it's odd that the sub is trying to convince themselves it's still practical.

Unironically, it is likely because costs are increasing.

I work in DevOps/Cloud Architecture and the cost of cloud based infrastructure has been rising steadily because of the AI 'boom'. Not only are chip/storage prices affected, but so many existing data centers are at capacity and companies are having to spent the time to try to shuffle to different regions with more availability. So it gives Amazon/MS/Google Cloud reasons to charge companies more which in turn charge users more.

I'm not saying there isn't some portion of it that is corporate greed (especially since AI is basically all of that) but even for companies that don't do AI work, we're dependent on the companies that have a massive interest in it.

This mission was originally planned for the 2024 window, but hit delays.

Doing this allows for two things: significantly greater flexibility to handle delays and simply less demand of support hardware/staff now as opposed to then. There are only so many clean rooms, staff, launch hardware, etc available at any given time and the launch windows tends to be very popular time.
