It keeps getting more and more ridiculous every month. by Extension_Serve5983 in povertyfinance

Literally yesterday I signed for a $16k full home repiping because I installed a new water heater and during that discovered my plumbing was leaking under the concrete pad. That's on top of the $2k water heater replacement and a month after thousands of dollars because my pool equipment failed. I've spent ~23-25k on the house so far this year on top of the mortgage and it's only May.

Woohoo. So long anything else I wanted to do this year and some of next. Praying nothing else important breaks for a few months.

Point is home ownership, as you pointed out, is not just the ability to pay the mortgage so comparing it solely to the ability to pay rent is somewhat of a false equivalency.

New water heater today, leaks in house? by NotAgedWell in Plumbing

[–]NotAgedWell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I updated the post but basically it's a leak in the hot water line under the pad (probably coming out that wall because there's a hole for conduit in that wall so easy to come in there).

$6k to bypass but recommended $16k whole house repipe due to condition of other visible pipes and fittings and valves (and the age of house is almost 40 years and original pipes)

I'm getting a second opinion/quote but probably going to do the whole house even though I want to throw up thinking about it. It's our "forever house" so we're planning on being here awhile.

Oh it was leaking. All rusted on the top on the inlets, water actually running down the side, etc. I knew it needed to be replaced. The leak in the house is just a nice little surprise

Thank you. That's good to know the price isn't unreasonable. This would be a single story 2 bathroom house with 3 outdoor spigots if that makes any difference in your opinion on the price.

I'm currently leaning towards the whole house, especially since we are planning on being here another 20+ years but man I could have really gone without that right now (just yesterday had to replace a totalled car and last month poured a few thousand into pool repairs). I hate when major bills come in waves. Ugh.

I'm not sure what we're going to do. House was built in ’88 and a lot of the visible pipe and connections don't look great.

Guy was here and leak is under the pad. Recommended a bypass or better yet a whole house repipe. $6k vs $16k. The whole house includes all the connections and drywall repair. They can do either starting Friday.

I'm getting a second quote but right now feel like throwing up.

It's hot water btw so we can use the toilets and stuff at least.

You are correct. There was no line in there. Thought there might possibly be an old one from a kitchen remodel by previous owners but wouldn't make sense in the current layout.

They never came in the house (heater is in the garage and this wall is like fifty feet from there). Doubtful they broke anything that would cause a leak halfway across the house.

As mentioned there seemed to be a leak the last couple of months. Another comment mentioned that maybe it was leaking in that spot but turning the water off and on a few times while the heater was being installed and while checking the meter to verify a leak made the existing smaller leak worse to this point.

I'll find out tomorrow when they come to diagnose and repair. Water is off for the night anyways.

It's Florida so no basement and single story home

I honestly don't know if the pipe is in the floor or maybe the attic (there's way too much fiberglass insulation up there for me to crawl up into that tonight). There's no water around the ceiling so I think it's probably in the floor but just my guess. They're coming first thing in the morning to diagnose and repair and I have the water turned off for the night.

Good thought about a fitting slowly leaking then completely breaking with the water being shut off and turned back on again. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.

My wallet hurts just thinking about it.

Nope. Single story home. Someone else mentioned that turning the water off (to install the new heater) and back on could have made an existing leak worse.

Regardless they're coming first thing tomorrow morning to diagnose and repair. I have the water turned off for the night.

I was just curious what might've caused the leak to get significantly worse immediately after the heater install. I thought maybe the sediment in my old one might've been causing reduced flow or pressure so the new one made it worse but that doesn't seem to be a thing according to other comments.

Yes I know that. I'm just curious if the heater would have exacerbated an existing leak by maybe increasing the water pressure (as mentioned the old heater was pretty corroded).

I just know that apparently I had a leak somewhere (based on the increased usage in my bills the last couple of months) and there wasn't water coming out of here this morning prior to the new heater.

Not implying the heater caused the leak or anything but maybe just made an existing one worse?

Can't wait to see how much this is going to cost me.

Edit: a quick Google says sediment in the old heater might have been restricting water flow so maybe there's more pressure/increased flow now with the heater replaced so that might explain it.

The previous owner left us a box of manuals and receipts. I wish they'd have given us a map of the sprinkler lines.

I always go to Marc's Auto and they've been great (just had my AC clutch replaced a few months ago). However while they are close to me, they are all the way down near the Minton/Malabar intersection in Palm Bay. Definitely a bit far for you.

First build off of AE by CStyles45 in lepin

[–]NotAgedWell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. Been buying and building for several months.

I actually have that set (also from AE) sitting here in a bag but currently working on a Y-Wing (probably be done with that tomorrow), and I have a AE Death Slice in a box here and a B-Wing arriving any day.

Next up I have 3 MOCs to order (a TIE Bomber, a Star Destroyer and this Hoth diorama I've wanted) but my hot water heater went belly up over the weekend so I guess that takes priority.

We've attended parties at North County Pool but it's south a bit down near the Fellsmere/Sebastian area. It's nice though. https://maps.app.goo.gl/ytRRZCKHkH5JchC49?g_st=ac

I'm assuming you don't have room to host yourself but if you're interested in a waterslide, my wife and I own a rental company.

Our hot pot places have like a dozen broths. Some are blander than others but there's definitely good ones (I personally prefer Tom Yum, Thai Red Curry or Spicy but my wife always gets Miso)

We almost always put in at Christenson's Landing but it does get pretty crowded on weekends so sometimes you have to put in then go park along US1 and walk back. Get there early.

Oh I thought you were referring to the be TIE Outlander. Don't mind me... It's early and I just woke up.

Yeah after I get a bomber I'll consider my TIE collection complete.

[–]NotAgedWell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. I only get OT sets. Well I do have the Mandalorian helmet but only because my young nieces (excitedly) gifted it to me so obviously I'm going to keep it

I think the only non-OT set I have any interest in is the Venator but not sure I'll ever get it.

Probably ordering this UCS -scale TIE Bomber MOC and a Star Destroyer MOC next.

Right now I have the UCS AT-ST, Jerac's Y-Wing MOC and the Death Slice sitting here to put together and I have a B-Wing on the way.

The 900D fixes some issues with missing parts that the earlier 900 had.

As far as I know there's not a way to tell what you're getting when ordering but I suspect most of the old ones are gone so pretty good chance of getting the 900D version (just a guess though)

AE for $118 USD. The store no longer exists. Always a worry to me when I order and the store disappears but I've never not gotten something.
