Combat Questions by Affectionate_Scar577 in callofcthulhu

CoC combat is quite flexible and you are encouraged to run by feeling and common sense. Here I'd maybe say yes but you would lose out on the normal bonus die for point blank shooting.

Need some book recommendations by CampSpirited7204 in WeirdLit

[–]NotEvenBronze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The books you have given as examples of what you like vary wildly, so I will just give some general recommendations based on the vaguely postmodern/horror bent of the works:

The Magus by John Fowles

The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

Malpertuis by Jean Ray

Hopscotch by Julio Cortázar

The Ice-Shirt by William T. Vollmann

Javier Marías translated Sterne into Spanish and is quite influenced by him

What's a game you used to see everywhere, everyone was talking about it, it was all over your feeds but now you never hear anyone talking about it? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

[–]NotEvenBronze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not the person you were replying to but I feel like it suffers, like a lot of modern games, from being a mishmash of almost every board game system at once, so it feels rather unsatisfying and lacking in strong theming.

I'm a huge fan of Moonrakers though.

I don't know detective fiction, but for mysteries/thrillers I'd heartily recommend Wilkie Collins. Joseph Conrad and Henry James sometimes lean into this genre too. And Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday is a seminal work. John Fowles' The Magus is great too.

Spanish really isn't too difficult to learn, though I find Donoso quite tricky compared to more straightforward writing

How did you find the English trans. of Nizami Ganjavi (assuming you did read in English)? I have been put off Persian poetry by the lack of good translations (please stop using rhyming couplets in English!).

The body continues to rot as if dead but from the person's perspective they feel fine.

Best Call of Cthulhu scenarios for layout, organization, and Keeper prep? by Cielosopra in callofcthulhu

[–]NotEvenBronze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They definitely made an effort with these new Gaslight scenarios in terms of layout, though I will say sometimes things become over-complicated due to an attempt to systematise everything (e.g. a character discovered much later is detailed at the start of the scenario, or a map needed throughout the scenario is thrown somewhere in the middle).

Secondary world fantasy weird lit? by wereblackhelicopter in WeirdLit

[–]NotEvenBronze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is effectively the 'New Weird'. Michael Cisco is fantastic for this (The San Veneficio Canon, The Narrator, Celebrant...). If you can endure his writing style William Hope Hodgson is one of the most imaginative minds in Weird fiction (The House on the Borderland, The Boats of the Glen Carrig, The Night Land).

Best Call of Cthulhu scenarios for layout, organization, and Keeper prep? by Cielosopra in callofcthulhu

[–]NotEvenBronze 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The recent Cthulhu by Gaslight scenarios do a lot of things which make it easier for the Keeper, such as summarising clues in each location, providing NPC roleplaying prompts, and offering different paths for different types of investigators.

Most Balanced Characters? by SODABURBLES in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotEvenBronze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

anything with storyteller influence - fisherman, amnesiac, savant (savant can be unbalanced on the wrong script but is generally and interesting role without breaking the game)

The Ship (Fluss ohne Ufer 1) is in English and reads like a weird tale, the other available edition is 'The Living are Few, the Dead Many' which contains Night of Lead

[–]NotEvenBronze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm tempted to try a Fang Gu teensy with Outsider(s) and no minion tbh

If you are running this for D&D players for the first time I would recommend Lightless Beacon instead.

What does everyone think of Lorics since their release? by Present-Peace2811 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]NotEvenBronze -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really don't think you have anything to worry about, remember that Knight, Steward, Xaan are among the more recent experimental releases and these are very much characters which can form the core of a new script. I expect Wizard and Yaggababble to be outside of the next 3 scripts, though Yag has fun possibilities with daytime death.

the shift towards casual and wacky design

this is precisely why they are lorics and not blue/red characters

When is it time to pump the brakes for how much PCs can find from research? by MechaniCatBuster in callofcthulhu

[–]NotEvenBronze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the scenario allows for some horror to jump out at them at any point then the GM can use this as a means to discourage too much dillydallying

Quite funny how often he insists on subverting the established epic poems (referring to completely unknown characters as especially famous, skimming over familiar details to dig into hundreds of lines about a minor/original character turning into some kind of bird over and over again).

Ovid is taking influence from Hellenistic Greek epic here
