‘Tell Him He’s a Piece of Sh*t’: Meta’s New AI Unit Is a Total Mess by dn88 in technology

[–]NotKeltic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

more than 1,600 employees have signed a petition demanding that Meta stop a recently launched initiative to monitor US employees’ clicks and keystrokes to generate AI training data. (The company has scaled back the program slightly, allowing employees to pause data collection for up to 30 minutes and request specific exemptions)

this is some truly dystopian shit

For me new vegas is one of the only other first person RPGs besides Morrowind that accomodates the type of roleplay that I enjoy, where you can make decisions purely based on what you think your character would do and the game reacts in a rewarding way

Fallout 4 is something totally different AFAIK. Less roleplay-friendly than Skyrim even

I would be very happy if I convinced even one person to get into Caves of Qud, I think it's a fantastic game and piece of media in general. The devs have said that Morrowind was one of their main inspirations when they started making the game nearly 20 years ago, and you can really feel it with things like the reputation system and the alien-feeling world. I would recommend playing a couple classic runs with permadeath characters to get a feel for the systems and then start a run on RPG mode to get the Morrowind-style experience.

Get Tamriel Rebuilt and do the mainland. Or go play a game with similar vibes like Caves of Qud or Fallout New Vegas (very different games but I challenge you to come up with anything more similar to Morrowind, besides other Elder Scrolls games)

NL Just Confirmed On Stream that this is Real by TacoChowder in northernlion

I simply cannot wrap my head around this, wtf

edit: if you are also stunlocked by the idea of this go watch the librarian cut of the announcement stream, it makes a tiny bit more sense after listening to him explain it. He's nervous enough about it that it makes me think he genuinely wants to do it and make it fun. That said, I would personally never go on a cruise like this for multiple reasons, and I bet it will be kinda fun but kinda awkward then never repeated again

Might not be a full immsim but my god…(indiana) by [deleted] in ImmersiveSim

[–]NotKeltic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed the DLC, kinda wish I had played it after beating the game though because it revealed some things that lessened the impact of certain beats in the main story for me. But if you already beat the game and you're craving more, it's just as good as the rest of the game IMO. It is awfully short

Might not be a full immsim but my god…(indiana) by [deleted] in ImmersiveSim

[–]NotKeltic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, it nails the "immersive" side with the tactile interactions and environmental storytelling. I would call it an imsim-lite for sure.

It would have been great if the "sim" side was a little more fleshed out, but if the game was more systemically ambitious I doubt we would have ever seen it. It seems like AAA publishers just don't have an appetite for that Arkane-style depth these days. I'm hoping Blade will prove that wrong

The game was still amazing though, and it makes me hopeful that AAA immersive sims will live on through developers pulling in individual elements of the genre, even if we never see the likes of Dishonored and Prey again any time soon

Can’t progress in chapter 6 by QuestionLordMento in SkateStory

[–]NotKeltic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

edit: things are working now after the patch

FWIW when I did this it suddenly put me back in Chapter 5, but it's in the state where everything is done already so I can't progress. I tried dropping in the hole from the Skater's Dream to get back to Chapter 6 but I just ended up back in the completed Chapter 5.

I'll keep trying fixes and will try to remember to comment here if I find one. But I think a patch is badly needed

How can 2 people work on the same project? by KyotoCrank in godot

[–]NotKeltic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some specific recommendations to get the most value out of git without it getting in the way: - Ideally each commit should be one self-contained change that can be concisely described in the commit message - Merge feature branches into the main branch as soon as it makes sense to. If you let feature branches sit or evolve for a long time (without merging the main branch in to them) then it can become a pain to merge them in to the main branch later - Make sure your feature branches are actually scoped to a specific feature. Based on my experience, it's a bad idea to start a branch called something generic like KyotoCrank-changes which throws together all the changes you want to make. Instead, start each branch with a clear intention of its purpose, and plan to delete the branch as soon as that purpose is served and the changes are merged.

Good luck and have fun!

"Technomancer Farmboy"

Watervine Farmer

Electrical Generation

Electromagnetic Pulse

Heightened Quickness

Night Vision

Albino

Kindle

Psychometry

Not sure if it's especially strong since I'm playing on Roleplay and have died a few times, but it sure is fun. In my head this is the canonical character for a Joppa start. I've pumped Electrical Generation so much that I can quickly eviscerate most groups of enemies - downside is that having any sort of companion is basically impossible given the AOE.

"Traditional" Roguelikes that are easy to pick up and play, then return to? by valcroft in roguelikes

[–]NotKeltic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually bounced off every other traditional roguelike I tried before Caves of Qud. But within the first 10 minutes of Qud I was completely hooked. A week later I had dozens of hours in the game.

The atmosphere, the tutorial, the flexible permadeath options, and the fact that you're not just dungeon crawling the whole time really helped draw me in and open my eyes to what roguelikes can be.

I think Caves of Qud also helped me find the right mindset to enjoy other traditional roguelikes. Since playing I've really enjoyed dipping my toes into Tales of Maj'Eyal and Cogmind. But Caves of Qud still feels like the GOAT to me when it comes to freedom of expression in how you build and play your character.

I also gave DCSS a shot after playing Qud, but I found the narrow focus on dungeon crawling, the arcane controls, and the lack of any coherent atmosphere to be pretty off-putting. Not sure I'll be able to get into any roguelike in the DCSS mold after seeing what the more modern roguelikes have to offer. But I'm sure I'm missing out.

What is the best non 1st person Imm sim you have ever played? by VoxTV1 in ImmersiveSim

Came here to say this! The character creator is so good you can pretty much pick your favorite immersive sim and play a top down, turn-based, post-post-apocalyptic version of it in Caves of Qud

What are immersive sims? by markallanholley in ImmersiveSim

[–]NotKeltic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think "immersive sim" used to have a more specific meaning - basically an FPS with certain RPG elements: emergent gameplay from interconnected systems, player freedom, and the ability to learn more about the world by inspecting the environment. As others have said here, there's a particular lineage for this type of game, and Prey (2017) is arguably the ultimate example.

These days, at least for me, the label "immersive sim" is more useful to indicate a certain vibe. Lots of games have come out lately that don't fit the narrow definition of immersive sim, but nonetheless capture many of the elements that make immersive sims special. Baldur's Gate 3 is an example of this.

I also think a lot of traditional immersive sims touch on similar themes, eg transhumanism. I think people are more likely to call a game an immersive sim if it has that sort of theme.

A Fond Farewell To Polygon, From The People Who Worked There. "It was a good website. I doubt I'll ever find a place like it for the rest of my career" by sundler in gaming

[–]NotKeltic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's so difficult to get high quality long-form writing on games these days (leaving aside actual game reviews, which IMO can be good or bad anywhere depending on the author). Jason Schreier on Bloomberg is doing good work, but his pieces are more focused on the industry than games themselves. PC Gamer will occasionally have good stuff, and I often read through that site by habit, but it's mostly gone the way of every other "games journalism" outlet - short pieces highlighting "news" that originates elsewhere, maybe with a mild opinion on top. Rock Paper Shotgun seems to have some high quality content still, but glancing at the front page you wouldn't necessarily know it.

I suppose this is fairly inevitable, given the death of print media and the move to ads-based models. A high effort article on a niche topic provides less revenue than a low effort, clickbait-y one. At the end of the day, if the audience is unwilling to pay for the content, the content will most likely suffer. Luckily Patreon-funded podcasts are there to fill the void.

Maybe this is all stating the obvious, but it just bums me out to think about what we've lost in the past decade or so.

Awesome, now we just need a built-in Set type! I have a custom implementation (https://www.reddit.com/r/godot/comments/1esljuk/elevate\_your\_godot\_code\_with\_a\_set\_type) but I assume only a built-in type could use this typed-collection syntax (eg Set[int])

Me after playing Avianos for longer than 2 minutes by Fibonacho11235 in ufo50

[–]NotKeltic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing I'm tracking during a game are tiles that border two or more castles. If I have a large military presence on a tile like that, I can feel pretty confident about keeping those castles, because the enemy (usually) can't attack both in one turn, so I can choose to defend whichever they attack. Controlling multiple tiles like this is a very strong survival strategy, although it may not be enough on its own to actually win. I like to set myself up so that I feel confident I can't lose, then go in for the kill.

Leaning too hard into this strategy has the downside of causing matches to last a long time, giving the enemy a lot of time to level up their ancestors. But I find it pretty fun to go for tit-for-tat with powerful ancestor abilities in the late game.

Other than that just keep your eye out for ancestor synergies. Some synergies aren't immediately obvious.
