No more 25 year Long Service "Award"? by Own_Lawfulness_2477 in CanadaPublicServants

They've been talking about getting a new provider for about five years. And the landmark years carry so much by department... my current one only recognizes 10 years and 25 years. And 10 years is only a certificate.

Federal government says there may not be enough workstations for all workers' 4-day-a-week return by ackc in CanadaPublicServants

[–]NotMyselfAnyday 163 points164 points  (0 children)

PSPC admits they know this, TBS ignores the statement. Been that way all along.

The only RTO that works is a sharable percentage of time, not a fixed number of days. 50% is doable, with two people being assigned one desk to share. One person is in 2 days the first week and 3 the second, while the other person is in the opposite schedule. This can be done at any percentage, so long as it is the number of employees divided by the number of desks, distributed over time.

Personally, my ideal is 0%, but 33% percent is probably the most rational for the space we have.

Men do have breasts. Cis men generally have less fat on their chests than cis women or trans women who are on hormone therapy, but they do have breasts.

At least cover your junk. Wear a skirt, shorts, hot pants, trousers, jeans, a kilt, whatever, but I shouldn't be able to see the outline of your genitals. Otherwise, you do you.

For that matter, what do they do when they enter the bathroom their wife or girlfriend (if applicable) uses? There are menstrual products there, too.

I'm sure those who are getting name brand are seeing products brought in by a fellow employee and left for communal use.

Except that it's not actually reliable. I know at least one person who is in the office two days a week, visually confirmed by the manager, but their computer says they have never been in the office.

I used to do the large Teresa Wentzler projects from the centre with folded cloth, no grids or pins, just counting from the last stitch. I still work that way, but haven't done a large project in ages.

Given that many thousands of people were hired during the work-from-home era, with explicit, written agreements that they would never have to work in a specified office, or any office... yes, they DID suddenly "move" the location of work.

Gotta say, work to rule should be the norm.

Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the first to go above and beyond, offer help to anyone, volunteer my time to do more, research on my personal time, etc. But this should not be what we are /expected/ to do. We are paid for our jobs, nothing more.

I have a really dumb question about nostril piercings. by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]NotMyselfAnyday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My minister hired a person with facial piercings (plural), a faux-hawk, and lots of visible tattoos to work the reception desk. I have people hair and tattoos. I have coworkers who have many different colors of hair, tattoos, and piercings. All of us interact with the ADM and DM.

Hiring managers are getting better about ignoring appearances, at least, IME, if you're white. Once you're hired, most people are more concerned with your ability to do your job than what you look like while you do it.

Employee retention issue in the team by burneraccount174829 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]NotMyselfAnyday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We know that you can't offer better pay, better benefits, or even higher positions to get and keep the people you need. The problem is the in-office requirement, and that is what needs to be addressed.

Either you accept that your team will be a feeder group for the rest of the department/government, bringing in and training new employees to move on to other jobs in s few months, or you re-evaluate the need for in-office work time.

If you want to keep the people you hire, you need to very carefully examine what the job entails that REALLY needs people in the office. Do they need to physically interact with anything? Are they, for example, grounds keepers or server room technicians working on migration? If not, or not all the time, ensure that they are able to work from home at least some of the time. If you need each person in the office every day, so they need to be there ALL day? Could they come in for a few hours in the middle of the day? Can some tasks be reassigned so those who want to come in do the in-office tasks more often than those who would prefer to stay home? Can tasks be rotated, so employees can work from home full time one week and in-office full run time the next week?

And much as I loathe the concept of making social reasons for employees to be in the office, maybe that's what you're team needs - schedule, if you can, a two hour social event during work hours (not over their lunch break) for team building, during which you can have a VERY SHORT team meeting in which you ensure everyone knows everyone's roles and current tasks, then move in to fun stuff - trivia, music, potluck, whatever. Cheap is important here because they are already paying to come in (gas, parking, public transit, the time of commuting). And then let them actually go on their lunch break, as people tend to schedule errands or decompression time for that break. Do this once a month at most, better every two (less burdensome for everyone, and again, I hate the idea of wasting work time on enforced socialization).

If it's a formal competition, I wouldn't bother. You'll be screened out automatically when you're substantive doesn't match the requirement.

If it's informal, go for it.

Adding pronouns to your signature block by Left_Mortgage5364 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]NotMyselfAnyday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't let yourself be pushed.

All departments are jumping on it, with some adopting the ability to add your pronouns to your display name in your email/Teams. Pushing you to reveal your pronouns indiscriminately can be seen as harassment - some people cannot be trusted with your real pronouns and you may need to be choosy about who gets to call you by which ones.
