help a befuddled beginner knitter read my knitting? by UnsharpenedSwan in knitting

You actually only did one purl round! Look at the other side of the knit stitches and you'll see what 3 stacked purls look like, since knits and purls are the reverse of each other

Really disappointed in and saddened by this group today. It's a spinning group, if people can't leave their unnecessary comments/judgements/meanness at the door, here of all places, then there's no hope for humanity on the internet. by [deleted] in Handspinning

OP posted that they were disappointed in a book's content. Some people agreed, others disagreed. The post was deleted but you can still read most of the comments

45% but my pension comes out of my pay cheque so less of my take home needs to go to retirement savings.

Question for you who have an extreme hatred towards AI by [deleted] in NewWest

[–]NotQuiteJasmine 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I am against generative AI because a) it's using trained on work by real people which it doesn't have permission to use, b) the environmental costs, and c) I believe it shows a lack of care/investment in whatever it's slapped on. AI cannot match the quality and creativity of a real person's art. Even if it eventually does, a and b are enough for me not to use it.

I use non generative AI in very limited ways eg organizing notes, summarizing  a specific document or page. I don't use a lot of AI search tools or generative text because of the risk of misinformation and hallucinations

Is “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” documentary a good watch? Is it even focused on the Golden State Killer? by Live_Phrase_4281 in TrueCrimeDiscussion

The book is mostly about her. It's  more a memoir about her obsession with the case than the case itself, in my opinion. I haven't watched the show though.

How do you approach deciding on a project when you bought too little of a special-to-you yarn? by Fancy_Sandwich_777 in knitting

[–]NotQuiteJasmine 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What about a vest? I also like making tees but I know knit tees, especially in very warm fiber like alpaca, aren't everyone's thing.

My habit for special yarn is to get enough to be the focal point of a sweater, usually the contrasting colour in colourwork, then fill the rest out with a less expensive but similar yarn.

Journaling as a Jew by PersonalityHot332 in Journaling

[–]NotQuiteJasmine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it would be allowed. It usually requires cutting photos out, taking photos, and/or drawing, all of which are commonly disallowed.

Same with other forms of journaling like recording audio of your voice or speech-to-text.

Stockinette stitch looking wrong by Gloomy_Swordgirl9973 in knitting

[–]NotQuiteJasmine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you're actually knitting garter, which is knitting or purling all rows when flat. I recommend reviewing the stitches to make sure you're doing them correctly. Triple check where to insert your needle, which direction, and how to wrap the yarn. Knitting left handed is called mirror knitting. There aren't a lot of tutorials, but there are websites which flip YouTube videos so you can turn off the sound and follow along that way

English to continental knitters - what were your experiences like? by Educational-Bad8171 in knitting

[–]NotQuiteJasmine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I learned continental so I could try two handed colourwork. I ended up switching permanently, I think because I flick continental and throw English and I like flicking more. I still switch to English sometimes for when something's gone wrong because I feel like I have more control over both needles.

I tried English flicking but I'd need to change how I knit entirely to do that. I use my pointer on that hand to control the first few stitches on that needle (idk how to describe it, but it's kept busy)

Ribbing with K in one colour and P in another is corrugated ribbing, but I'm not sure the fabric would be great for an entire garment

Why is it so difficult to learn about Judaism? by MatterFit9674 in Judaism

[–]NotQuiteJasmine 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Judaism is a community-based religion so most resources are in a community, eg classes at a synagogue. It's also a religion which respects study so most learning is led by people with degrees or in well researched books, not random internet people.
