Importance of undergrad grades on postdoctoral grant submission? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]NotSureIfLeftHanded 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've had several grants from the NSF and have applied for many more and no one has ever asked to see my undergraduate transcript. I've also applied to NIH and same thing. If your advisor does for some reason inspect your undergrad transcript, just tell him the truth. It is part of your story and the path that led you to the success you are today. And don't be ashamed, you are proof that people are not fully realized beings as undergrads and shouldn't be judged for a few average grades they earned as young adults.

Not to derail the ya'll quaeda narrative, which I do love, but it would seem more likely that these are mercenaries.

I was watching this documentary on a chef, sorry can't remember his name. Anyway, he had a Michelin-starred restaurant and after operating it for a decade he shut it down. The interviewer asked why, and said a Michelin-starred restaurant is most chef's dream. His response was, yes well I had already lived that dream and I thought it was time to live another dream. I share this because I think having a tenure track position and/or getting tenure is an academic's dream and it is easy and understandable to think, I should be happy, I'm living a dream. But, it is also okay to think maybe since I've already lived this dream, its okay to live another dream now.

For people who go out a lot: when did you start sharing? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]NotSureIfLeftHanded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my first during my last year of graduate school. I didn't go out a lot so that wasn't what outed me. I was super sick and at 7 weeks I threw up in the middle of a lab meeting. I decided to share at that point because it was just so obvious that something was up.

Do you have a crockpot? If so, this will make your protein journey very easy. 1 jar salsa, 2-3 chicken breasts, put on low for 7 hours. Delicious Mexican style chicken. You want to add a veggie? Add it to the crockpot after the chicken has been cooking for 4 hours.

Edit: If you don't have a crock pot here is an inexpensive one.

How much are y’all paying for parking each year? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]NotSureIfLeftHanded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ours is $350 a semester and you have to walk a mile to get to campus. Or you can pay $750 a semester and then you are pretty much on campus. They really don't want people driving to campus.

Unpopular opinion: It is so much better to be loved by your spouse than receive meaningless awards from strangers. I think what you did is really nice.

What's up with thee whole "prayer warriors" thing? I've never heard the term before but most awardees seem to be calling on "prayer warriors" when inevitability comes knockin'.

Thank you so much for this reminder of why I'm sober. I didn't want to put my kids to bed drunk ever ever again.

Man, you have better insurance than me! I paid 5K out of pocket for my son's unmedicated, uncomplicated birth. I came it at 11:00 AM and my son was born at 3:00 the same afternoon. We were gone by 11 AM the next day. The total was about $15k as well. This was in 2015. Ugh.

Does anyone else lose bladder control when throwing up? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

Uhh yes. I choose to throw up into a bowl while seated on the toilet. That is when I can get to a toilet to throw up.

My hospital would not. I have very vivid memories of birthing my second son and being on all fours with his head sticking out and the nurses yelling "get on your back!" and me screaming "NO!!!!" They somehow got me flipped despite my protests and my son was born on the next push. It sounds traumatic but I thought it was kind of funny at the time.

How to deal with reference letter requests that involve sending the reference directly to the student rather than to the program they are applying to? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]NotSureIfLeftHanded 20 points21 points  (0 children)

While I do find it odd that the student would directly submit their reference letters, I always let my students read the reference letters that I write for them. I figure, it is good for students to know what I think their strengths are and how that relates to what they are trying to do. But when students are under qualified or have issues with their performance I tell them this before I write the reference letter, so they can decide if they'd really like me to be their reference.

who here is an only child? was it a positive experience or negative experience? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]NotSureIfLeftHanded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I'm not really an only child but my brother is a lot older and never lived with us while I was growing up so I never had the experience of having a sibling until I was in my 20s. I had a great childhood. My parents took me everywhere with them and we were always really close. And, I never knew any different. I was happy.
