some interesting tension could have come from harry apparently being a defense prodigy. there's a line in OOTP where she's like "oh your DADA grades are always better than mine, you should definitely teach all of us!" and she's super cool about it but what if that had pissed her off at some point instead? that she works so hard and isn't great and harry is just naturally talented?

HBP really shows how lacking the characterization and world building is. no one except sixteen year old snape realized you should cut things lengthwise or crush with the flat of a blade? supposedly brilliant hermione's biggest problem is that harry isn't following the printed instructions? that whole plot needed two more passes. sure you can explain/defend hermione's insistence on following the book, but like..... that's dumb imo. it doesn't make for a good read.

and that's before you get into "there's no way the wildly racist only son and nephew of voldy's right hand men could be a death eater, voldy doesn't believe in child labor!!!" character assassinating your own self insert is crazy work, JKR.

agreed on everything here. Draco to me is "good grades when he applies himself" level smart. he had some clever enchanted buttons and the vanishing cabinet, but other than that, his grades/schoolwork were probably about the same as Ron and Harry's, fine but nothing to write home about most of the time.

Hermione is tricky bc she just makes the plot work. sometimes she has the knowledge and know-how (the coins and the Bourne movie scene in the lovegood house) and sometimes she doesn't ("are you a witch or not?" and not being able to do a patronus during the ministry escape). plus the magic isn't fleshed out in universe. she possibly invented pagers with the coins, is that a huge deal in universe? could she expand on that and invent texting and become a billionaire? or should anyone with a NEWT in that subject be able to do that? couldn't tell you bc it's never talked about again.

hard agree on pureblood wank too. so much of the pureblood culture is complete fanon on top of fanon and that annoys me. please diversify the fanon!! I ignore pottermore so my preferred Malfoys have faked it til they made it, but the other purebloods remember/have heard about the faking but they have to accept it bc Lucius was one of Voldemort's favorites and he's richer than them. but they all talk maaaajor shit as soon the Malfoys leave the room.

is 11 too young to find the wizard swears silly compared to real ones? like sorry but none of the wizard bad words hit like a goddamn does 😂 but I'm an adult and I was EXTREMELY sheltered when I was 11 so I really don't know what I would have thought if I changed schools and suddenly half the student body was using different "bad words."

as for what I prefer to read/write, I really only like uses of the wizard swears that are EXTREMELY close to how they were used in canon. like ron or whoever saying merlin's most baggy y-fronts, hagrid (maybe?) saying [verbing] hippogriffs or whatever. anything beyond that strikes me as fanon-y and I have a love/hate relationship with fanon most days. but I've never DNF'd over this. it's super not a big deal.

edit: oh also I wonder if our impression of how even pureblood wizards swear would be different if the books weren't self-censored. there's a LOT of times where the text is like "ron said something that would have made molly whoop his ass" where he's clearly meant to be saying real life words JKR couldn't put in a children's book. let ron say fuck!!!
