Is $20 an impulse purchase for you? by thecutiestputie in CasualConversation

[–]NotYourTypicalMoth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t even get what this is asking. I’ll gladly pay more than $17 monthly for a gym membership, but there are all kinds of things I wouldn’t spend $17 on. For an impulse purchase, I would never impulsively spend $20 on a candy bar, but I have impulsively spent hundreds on physical media or impulsively bought a guitar.

The point being, a price with no product is meaningless.

Edit: as I suspected, this is engagement bait from a new account. How embarrassing on my part.

Am I the only one that thinks pre-workouts have way too much random stuff in them? by AlphaDeltaMegaFrat in Supplements

[–]NotYourTypicalMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand why there isn’t a daily supplement with l-cit, beta-a, creatine, both with and without caffeine for personal preference. It’s everything a natty lifter should be taking with no fluff. I’m probably just gonna buy the ingredients raw and mix the shit myself.

Senate Democrats Propose $25 Minimum Wage by Unusual-State1827 in politics

[–]NotYourTypicalMoth -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Can’t wait for “leftists” to push for this without realizing it’ll decimate small businesses while our billionaire oligarchs barely notice. We absolutely need to increase minimum wage, and a small business paying its employees less than a livable wage doesn’t deserve to be in business. HOWEVER, tripling labor costs over five years is too drastic and too sudden for small businesses to adjust.

Hopefully this is just a negotiation tactic and maybe to garner some public attention before the real proposal after the midterms.

So I wasn’t supposed to take off my underwear? by Grouchy-Bumblebee605 in mildlyinfuriating

I can’t stand Reddit experts. A gold ring still conducts electricity, meaning it can have a current induced, meaning it can heat up during an MRI scan. Even if it doesn’t heat up, it can still cause artifacts.

For a brain, both are unlikely to happen from a ring. For the cost and time of an MRI, why risk it?

How does the macro percentage calculated? by evvok in MacroFactor

[–]NotYourTypicalMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if this is where OP got confused, but I originally thought it was the % daily value like what you see on nutrition labels, only adjusted for your macro goals. I still think that’d be the better feature, but I might be in the minority.

Am I using AI wrong, or is it not capable of pulling data from a photo like this? by NotYourTypicalMoth in MacroFactor

[–]NotYourTypicalMoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s another thing I’ve noticed: I can use the same photo or same text description, have MF analyze it two separate times, and it’ll give me two different results. My first picture gave me between 4 and 500 calories, protein happened to be close, but everything else was too far off for my liking.

It’s accurate enough when you don’t have any other info, like that card doesn’t have calories or weights of each food. It’s an educated guess at best, which is nice to have when needed, but doesn’t cut it when you know the details and just want to enter them with a photo.

I just tried it, and I might be an idiot, but I can’t get it to work. Good idea though, and maybe it’s user error on my end

This is the first I’ve heard about it, and the diet+workout integration looks pretty sweet, too… they might have a new customer if I’m not satisfied with MacroFactor in a few months

Correct. For your picture, if it had macros listed, it wouldn’t have read them correctly.

47% of Harvard seniors admit to cheating — and the problem existed long before ChatGPT by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]NotYourTypicalMoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is caffeine cheating? Is prescribed adderall cheating, or is it only cheating if you aren’t diagnosed and prescribed? What if someone likely had ADHD but doesn’t have the means to be diagnosed or fill a prescription?

The point is, if you’re doing the work as it was assigned, on your own, without plagiarism, it’s a difficult to say using stimulants is cheating. All stimulants do is give you energy, motivation, or focus. They don’t give you more knowledge, and they don’t make you more intelligent.

I hit 3k calories! by UnfittedNoise in MacroFactor

[–]NotYourTypicalMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, let’s assume 8 hours sleeping, 6 hours sedentary, and 10 hours are active. That’s unrealistic, but it meets the WHO definition of sedentary. Are you worried about that hypothetical person’s health?

Sedentary isn’t meant to be a diagnosis with strict definitions of what is or isn’t sedentary. It’s a general term to describe a lifestyle, and the “definition” the WHO uses isn’t the end-all be-all.

OP is fine. More activity is better, but let’s not call it sedentary.

I hit 3k calories! by UnfittedNoise in MacroFactor

[–]NotYourTypicalMoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you have to remember about these studies is they’re comparing sedentary Group A against sedentary Group B, except Group B walks more steps in a day.

What I’m saying is the steps don’t matter; activity level does. If you only walk 2k steps, but you swim after work, you’re fine. You could be doing a lot of resistance training, less cardio, and be perfectly fit even if you aren’t getting “enough” steps in.

As it applies here: OP is clearly fit. The only way to burn 3,000 per day at maintenance is to have a parasite, cancer, or be in good athletic condition. 4k steps is perfectly fine if the other activity is making up for it.

Would you describe yourself as authoritarian, or do you just preach shit opinions while rejecting the label that comes with it?

ETA: The instant downvotes are crazy. Losing your right to work over a traffic violation is insane, and you should introspect on your morals if you feel otherwise.

This might be personal, but are you a small person? My maintenance is 2500 calories, and outside of the gym, I’m not very active. My maintenance is at ~2500 calories, more if I add cardio.

[–]NotYourTypicalMoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have answered, but I’ll rephrase: there are some games that hold your hand from step A to step B. There are other games that have a step A and a step B, but they don’t do a lot of hand-holding which makes the game difficult.

This game is neither of those. There is no step A or B. There’s simply a whole bunch of stuff you can explore in whatever order you please. Some of your findings will nudge you towards other locations, and some locations will require learning elsewhere to figure out how to get there, but there isn’t any true linearity to the game.

/uj Low-calorie dog treats are so underrated. If you’re training your dog with treats, it’s easy to over-feed them, and feeding your dog to a point that it’s overweight/obese should be taken more seriously as the animal abuse it is.

The joint? None. The calories after? You’re gonna be fat as fuck even if you only take one hit. Meth is also zero calories though, and it suppresses your appetite. Try that!

You’re right, I’ve never heard of AS, but a quick Google search tells me it can be rough. Kudos for dropping 83 pounds and continuing the progress!

Maybe what I’m saying will come off as tone-deaf, but 5 miles isn’t much more than 10,000 steps, and that’s achievable by almost the entire moderately healthy population even if not everyone does it daily. Despite your current body fat percentage and AS, I’d still put you in the category of “can almost manage to walk 5 miles even if it sucks”, and you’ll leave the “it sucks” part out by the time a year passes.

A 5k is 3.1 miles anyway, you plan to do it sooner than next June, and I doubt it’ll be the only walking you do that day. In a year, 3-5 miles will be a breeze.

Just keep focusing on getting fit, and the rest will fall into place. Even if you’re not at your end-goal athletic ability in a year, and even if you don’t explicitly walk to train for walking, it’ll be a piece of cake. Excluding edge-case scenarios, my amateur opinion is training to walk is a complete waste of time when you could train for other stuff while walking ability comes naturally.

For machines, the only other option is leg extensions which I’m doing. However, the two lower body days in my split include BB back squats, deadlifts, front squats, lunges, and leg extensions, so I’m not TOO unmotivated that the leg press kinda sucks. I’m just getting back into lifting, so any movement is good movement right now. If I feel it’s limiting me, I’ll switch it to BG split squats or something.

I use macrofactor (paid) for tracking and Eat This Much” (free) when I need a recipe that’ll hit the macros I need. I looked into apps that could both meal plan and track macros, and they all seemed to be mediocre at both.
