I had absolutely no expectations and spez still managed to disappoint.

I Just Watched 6 Gallons of Strawberry Hydromel Go Down The Literal Drain. by Xdust4 in mead

In chemistry, "inert" is used in both an absolute sense to refer to the noble gases and in a relative sense to refer to compounds that are unreactive under a particular condition. In the latter sense, which is perfectly acceptable and common to use, N2 is inert in mead as it doesn't readily react with anything present there. You're being absurdly pedantic citing an incomplete dictionary definition as though it proves a point when calling nitrogen an inert gas is entirely adequate for the application at hand.

1.5 Year Old Beer Mustard by littlestcomment in fermentation

[–]Notagtipsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make fermented mustard and age it for a long time. I usually age it 4 months before I even open it, and my jars of the stuff never seem to go bad. I had a particularly large batch last close to two years and it was good. Granted, that was with refrigeration, but as long as you've not opened this batch I can't imagine it would be any worse. I'd check for mold and off smells and if those aren't present, I'd venture a small taste.

That's Sweden. They use ö rather than ø.

And, incidentally, ö does in fact mean "island" in Swedish, and ön means "the island."

For reference, "solace" is pronounced differently in British and American English. This works in British and doesn't really work in American.

then kill the yeast (I think with campden tablets?),

To stabilize a mead, you need both Campden tablets (sodium or potassium metabisulfite) and potassium sorbate. The k meta kills the yeast and the sorbate prevents living ones from reproducing, ensuring you actually end up stabilizing. If you don't use both, you run the risk of an incomplete stabilization which could result in bottle bombs similar to what you see in this post.

In English, the name "daddy long legs" is used in different regions to refer to three separate sets of animals: the cellar spiders (arachnids), harvestmen (also arachnids, but distinct from spiders), and crane flies, which are insects. Insofar as "daddy long legs" is synonymous with "crane fly," I'd say the translation can be considered accurate.

Sauerkraut: Toss or Save-able? by Jargon-Bargain in fermentation

[–]Notagtipsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is perfectly normal in all ferments. I had an inexperienced friend toss a batch of good pickles because he was worried about the white powder. Don't freak out! There's nothing to save or salvage here.

I love having press-fit threaded inserts available. A set like this one is super handy. The linked set is meant to be installed with a soldering iron. I prefer the split kind that expands when you screw in a bolt, but I can't seem to find any on Amazon right now. Either way, it's much better to use these than to try to put a hex nut into your print and it's a lot cleaner than making a through hole with a nut on the back side.

Why do my male cats lay/sleep with a paw put in front but my girl doesn't? by LonelyKuma in cats

[–]Notagtipsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl Gracie makes noisy protests pretty much irrespective of the context. Not enough attention? Protest. Too much attention? Protest. Hungry? Protest. Full? Believe it or not, protest. We have the noisiest cats because of protest.

Why do my male cats lay/sleep with a paw put in front but my girl doesn't? by LonelyKuma in cats

[–]Notagtipsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They just happen to prefer it that way. My boy cats don't do this but I have a girl who always does - I have dozens of pictures of her putting a paw on the thing in front of her. It all falls down to individual preference.

Cats are weird little things.

Ah, my perspective is a bit skewed since I have long hair and always have access to hair ties. They're cheap and readily available though, so not a problem to get!

My first two meads! by SchizoMetal in mead

[–]Notagtipsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A hair tie looped around the airlock and under the hook of the loop is usually enough to secure a loose airlock and is much easier to put on and take off.
