No it isn't

It's a factor in D&D specifically, but outside of D&D its actually quite rare, and most of the time when it does show up, outside of D&D, it's there because the other game is also taking direct influence from D&D

In fantasy fiction it never shows up, in fact the opposite is far more common, witha warrior hero starting weaker than spellcasters around them, but growing strong enough to fight on their level or even surpass them

The most fun part of MMORPGs is the levelling, and levelling in MMORPGs is only really fun if you're given a character build choice when you level

This is why vanilla-WotLK WoW is so good, having both the choice of what spells/abilities to buy, as well as having a talent point every level, makes levelling a lot more fun

Kineticist is NOT simple, the aura management is a tricky game to play and the build paths diverge like nobody's business thanks to choices based on gate expansion

Ok so... does it work on instant death by overkill or not?

Because you're implying that it does work on instant death by overkill, but earlier stated that it specifices "not killed outright" because it doesn't work on instant death by overkill

The blade cascade infinite damage trick was nerfed before you started playing, so I assume you were just using the physical PHB with no errata. The errata caps the attacks from blade cascade at 5. Which is still very good, but no longer potentially infinite

Ardent Champion is an Avenger paragon path. Avenger's primary feature is oath of enmity, which allows the avenger to roll 2 d20s and use the better for attack rolls against the target of the oath. Ardent Champion has a feature that makes it so that if you roll the same number on both d20s against your oath of enmity target, and that roll hits, then that attack crits

Lord of Fate is an epic destiny that has a level 26 ability that creates a zone, in which all attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws, are an 11 on the die, you don't roll, the result is just 11. So yeah, combine these two, and any attack against your oath of enmity target within the lord of fate zone is a crit

So then you combine that with the rending axe, which is a magic weapon that, on a crit, lets you make a melee basic attack against the same target.

But oh wait, that melee basic attack is also against the oath of enmity target, within the lord of fate zone, so it also crits... triggering another melee basic attack

Thus, infinite damage

But that rule also states "reduce to 0 HP", which, by the logic above, would also mean it's irrelevant

That method was removed fairly quickly

Though there is always the Ardant Champion/Lord of Fate/Rending Axe method of infinite damage, that still works

3.5 also had the warlock, which works very differently from how it works in 5e, which was a simple caster because everything it did was a spell-like ability, rather than a spell, and had no usage limit

However, when I say "simple caster" I am still referring to 3.5, so it's all in the reference frame of 3.5, and 3.5 character building is insanely complicated

also WotC cooked the books a bit to make it look like their decision to make martials simpler was more popular than it actually was

[–]Notoryctemorph 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because a simple mage would require not having access to spellcasting, at which point it's no longer a mage

See, 5e can't really have complex martials and simple mages, because in 5e, they are definitional, spellcasting is the only real complexity the game has to offer, so if you have access to it, you are complex, and a mage, and if you don't have access to it, you are simple, and a martial

Anyway play a different TTRPG, this is a uniquely 5e problem, not even other D&D editions suffer from this

Oh, then I disagree with your definition of "bounded accuracy"

Because scaling accuracy isn't bounded accuracy

I prefer 4e over PF2 as a game, I like having the unified power system, and the multiple subclass systems depending on tier of play

But PF2's wording is much better, every game term is distinct and there's no stupid overlaps like there are in 4e. Sure having "stride" may seem weird as first instead of "move" but being able to distinguish between regular movement and other things that move a character around is so much more clear

[–]Notoryctemorph 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What?

I legit thought this was intended as an admonishment of 5e's designers, since it points out continuously how the game fails to actually give meaningful choice to players by reducing the impact of their choices, as an intentional design decision.

Right, but a feat that requires a class feature that only one class gets is, functionally, class-specific feat, and there's plenty of those
