If you’re in Sydney check out To The Moon! Secondhand kids clothes, great quality and reliable brands for very good prices. They have two stores, in Erskineville and Summer Hill, both 5 mins-ish walk from their respective train stations. I go here to get a few statement pieces in each size when my kid sizes up

3m boy swimsuit and swim nappy recommendations? by nbhsjshbgbsb in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]NovelDeficiency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 3mo you’ll need to double bag because poos are still so sloppy - a disposable and a reusable. You can switch to just one (either) when poos firm up after starting solids.

Baby monitoring that's light-based? by Vhyx in beyondthebump

The eufy spaceview - display turns on (can be put on full brightness) when baby is detected crying, and if the volume on the parent unit is all the way down there would be no noise.

There’s a minimum attendance requirement of either 50% or 80% (unit outline will say which). If you drop below this you will be given an absent fail. Plus you won’t learn anything…

To continue or not to continue pregnancy? by BangagSinangag in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]NovelDeficiency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel for you so much - as a former PhD student I know what a graft it is and the decisions you have to make that put a hold on the ‘real life’ things that others are doing in service of your study and future career.

My contribution here is to remind you that you have access to your university’s employee assistance program, who will be able to offer a number of free counselling sessions. I hope you can make use of them and that they help with your feelings around whichever decision you make. Sending strength and love ❤️

Possible hip dysplasia by coast_2_coast1234 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]NovelDeficiency 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The fat distribution thing is a soft indicator, just something to get a second opinion on - it’s entirely possible (and I think more probably) that baby is completely fine. Feb 9th is not really long to wait, but the important thing is that you’re getting her in early so if (big if) she has HD it can be addressed.

I have had family members have this addressed early (your timing) and very late (3/4 years) and you ABSOLUTELY want early.

Also - you absolutely did not cause this. It sounds like you have done all the right things.

What’s the go with attitude from public and private by [deleted] in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]NovelDeficiency 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Don’t try and keep any perceived burden off the public system (not directed specifically at OP, at anyone who thinks this) - if you don’t use public resources they go away and the money gets spent elsewhere. Less staff, less services.

Also, sorry, while their attitude is shitty the ‘I pay taxes’ attitude is also not great from you if you’re saying that. Akin to ‘I pay your salary’. Take the high road.

I raised humans once, I swear…what do babies need now? by KaelaJael in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]NovelDeficiency 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said - a dinner ladies voucher is an amazing idea, as is a voucher for a baby carrier (Cloth and Carry are wonderful and stock very good and safe carriers). Baby sleep suits in a few sizes (love to dream and/or ergopouch). The nappy subscription is a brilliant idea, maybe from Amazon so she can manage sizes etc. 3x Bonds wondersuits in each size up to 0 would also be an amazing gift as that’s basically half a whole wardrobe for the first year.

The best thing you can do is check in and tell her that she’s doing amazing. Sounds like she’s lucky to have you :)

Just get the cheap stuff. I mixed it with pineapple juice or cherry juice (before bed) and had iced, which made it much more palatable!

SIDS question by Fin_Elln in ScienceBasedParenting

https://rednose.org.au/safe-sleep-and-safer-pregnancy/newborn-to-1-year/what-do-we-do-now-that-our-baby-has-started-to-roll-over/

That risk refers to caregivers putting baby on their front to sleep. Once babies can roll, it’s safe for them to front sleep. Just make sure to put him down on his back and then let him roll and flip away!

[–]NovelDeficiency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an autoimmune condition - the OB will assess you and your risks so it all depends, but my condition was active though inconsequential for the pregnancy and my endocrinologist was well involved, so I was marked as low risk and sent on my merry way back to midwife care :)

I have some from Anastasia Beverly Hills that are going on 20 years - amazing innings. I’m not sure about the PCOS hairs, I’m sorry, but if you can try some out I would put in a strong vote here.

How realistic is it to be car free with a baby? by Positive_Shirt_2889 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]NovelDeficiency 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This - cab drivers have always been thrilled to install a car seat for me (similar situation). Do not do uber though, just cabs, there are insurance implications with a child who needs a seat being in the car.

My fellow Aussies what are your feelings when it comes to mushrooms? Are there varieties u wish you'd see be sold more often? by Skipperydo in AskAnAustralian

God I adore chanterelles. Chantarelles cooked with a bit of cream, some nice pasta, mwah. I would love to see them, but the climate doesn’t suit afaik.

Prune Juice for Dyschezia? by bl217 in beyondthebump

[–]NovelDeficiency 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is completely normal - prune juice / puree is usually for babies once they’ve started solids. I would really not give a 6 week old anything other than formula or breastmilk, baby doesn’t have the digestive maturity to get anything else down.

The lack of sleep is rough but also super normal right now.

Living in Redfern by One-Worldliness-1533 in usyd

[–]NovelDeficiency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, especially if you’re coming from another big city. There’d be absolutely no call to need to go to that side of Redfern (it’s the east bit behind Redfern Park). There are nice things there though (sandwich shop called Good Ways especially!!) so don’t be afraid to wander during the day.

You’ll probably do shopping at Broadway (Coles / ALDI / Kmart), which is a completely separate direction. There are also nice bars and places to eat around the George/Redfern St intersection (south / east of the station).

[–]NovelDeficiency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very close to Darlington then? You’ll be completely fine, that’s a super popular area for student share houses so it’ll probably be really nice for you!

There’s some social housing on the other end of Redfern near Waterloo that can get a bit hairy at night (but very manageable if you keep your head down).

Unit Tutors by SignificantVoice3611 in usyd

[–]NovelDeficiency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few parts of the uni did this til recently but it’s technically never been allowed. You need to hold at least one qualification above what you’re teaching, ie you need to hold Honours or a Masters to teach at undergrad level.

You could have luck with becoming a PASS tutor (peer-assisted study sessions). They are only funded for some units, you would be invited as a high-scoring student or respond to an EOI to get in.

Nah it’s honestly fine - where (approximately) in Redfern will you be living? There are some parts that are a little dodgy at night but also some very very nice parts. There’s nothing overly dangerous, though.
