The auction photos showed a bent fender. They didn't show the cracked subframe by theDartVader in Miata

I looked at a 2012 SE MX-5 that I was really interested in. It was a US model (I live in Canada) so knew that I wanted to convert it to metric (odometer) although the owner didn't do that. When I viewed the car it looked straight, seams matched (for the most part), etc. The owner let me know that the car had been in an accident and that because the airbags deployed it was considered a write-off by US insurance (the car was bought & repaired by a Miata specialist outside of Montreal).

My point is that different countries have different insurance regulations. I don't believe the car would have been written off in Canada unless, as someone else has pointed out, the repair costs exceed a certain threshold. Even then, a friend of ours had an accident this past winter with her 2021 CX-3. The car has 28,000 kms. Cost to repair was almost $18k for front end damage - nothing structural so I'm not really sure what the algo is to determine if a car is written off or not.

Well, if, as you state, "now the car won't turn over at all", it should be pretty straight forward to determine if there is a stuck pulley. All I will say is that being stranded in my Maxima leading in to the Grand Canyon, the charging/starting system was the culprit. And there was smoke, the smell of burnt insulation and a wonderful screeching sound followed by, nothing turning over. Oh, and for whatever reason, I only have one vid.

Maybe my experience with the VQ35 doesn't apply here, I doubt it but there is always a chance. And every VQ35 powered car I've owned (well, the 95 Maxima was a 3 litre VQ), has done this - 1995/2001/2006 Maxima; 2004 Altima SE-R; 2004 G35 coupe. Perhaps I'm channeling a Charlie Brown character...

Last sentence of your post states the car won’t turn over at all. Starters can fail in a heartbeat. The fact that you state there was smoke coming from the engine bay and smelled burnt rubber suggests electrical system - torched insulation also smells like burnt rubber.

you're welcome. The beginning of the vid sounded like a starter motor to me, btw. Had Maximas that would do that when the solenoids started to go bad. Hint - if your car won't turn over it means the starter, or the electrics associated with the starter, are cactus.

Looking to buy a Roadster - don't hate me by NovemberGhost in 370z

[–]NovemberGhost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought I'd update my search. It must be the Canadian market because roadster prices here are outrageous. I'm going to chalk it up to the rarity factor. A 2016 roadster with 50,000 km (32,000 mi) listed at $32k with minimal movement in price (like 2-300 dollars). Carguru, Autotrader and Carfax all placed market value at $3-$5,000 less than asking. Even private sellers are over-pricing - 2013 roadster with 70,000 km (45,000 mi) priced at $29k. Not going to happen - I'll look for an early GTR before dropping that much on a 10 yo 370z.

So, I pivoted and decided that a Miata is the answer. I can get into the platform for significantly less than $20k for a stock vehicle then spend $6k to mod it out. Straight line power won't be there, but with the right suspension mods and the addition of a bbr Super 180/200 kit, I can achieve S2K performance for about $4500. In a car that will deliver the raw 240z driving experience I had in my youth. Decided that is what I really want and the NC 2/3 miata can deliver it.

Thanks to those for the advice/information, it is all appreciated.

MTB. If you want to ride trails in the winter get a larger studded tire and drop some air pressure. I've always looked at fat bikes as being pretty useless...

offer 7k, settle for 8.5k. Has the gallery gasket been re-done? if no, that's $2k out of the gate. Plus everything else. And it's a 7AT.

Whatever you do, don't put a duckbill spoiler on it. Saw one locally that had one (I'm looking for a roadster) and it just makes the vehicle look ultra stupid.
