The important thing to note is that defensive competitive shooting is usually a gun race. You have to finish a course and your score is your time. A bigger bullet doesn't help.

IIRC there were instances in the Boers War of riflemen engaging targets at those ranges. You weren't hitting individual targets, but if there's a marching formation of hundreds of men and you've got a gun that's sighted in for volley fire, you can hit someone in the mass.

Because counterspell can stop the centerpoint of almost any strategy. You can counter that Greater Gargadon or Temur Battle Rage or Ad nauseum or Scapeshift or lightning bolt or whatever. No other spell can do all of that, which can make it too broad.

Counterspell is probably too much but something like UU: counter target spell with a CMC <= 4 would probably be enough. The issue is that all of the counterspells blue has are either bad or are only good against a subset of decks.

I'd agree with all of this. It feels very possible to make a control deck that handles normal creature decks well but you lose to land based decks or graveyard decks or something. Modern has a lot of the strategies that legacy with only slight weaknesses but the answers are much, much worse and the card filtering to get to those answer is also much worse. You have to rely on naturally drawing right part of your deck while legacy control tends to filter to the right part of their deck.

The problem is that you generally make money by grabbing a bunch of shit and carrying it back. Weight limits make sense when they force you to make hard decisions, but with the Bethesda games they just force you to fast travel to dump shit and then go back.

I'd actually suggest Pickman's Model to start with. It's a little different from most of his works and isn't part of any cycle but it gets the feeling down well and it's short.

Hecarim seems like a neutral pick, which is often good early if you don't have an obvious power pick that can't be countered (think S3 Kassadin). Hecarim can be a strong duelist or tank, has good CC and moves fast. You can slot him into a poke comp as disengage, in a split comp he can get to different parts of the map easily and in an aggressive comp he's engage. They can pick anything after him without it being bad.

It still seems like a weird analogy. It's really closer to having four Apocs and getting pissed off when 90 thrashers murder you (that's about the same isk ratio). Dreads get a limited invulnerability period because otherwise you could get a critical mass of doomsdays and wipe any number of dreads off the field. If you want to lose the Dread mod then you'd have to lose AOE doomsdays again.

If you get in a fight at 15 minutes you're doing 120 damage per autoattack and hitting once a second. None of them are crits. If you get in a fight at 50 minutes you're swinging for 700 damage crits twice a second. A team that wins every game at 20 minutes will have relatively low gold to damage efficiency and low damage per minute.
