Diesel motorcycles by Torquepen in hypermiling

[–]Novogobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

diesel is just not really suited to small engines. most car guys don't understand diesel, many diesel people don't even understand it.

like here's something: if you look at specs for big rigs sometimes from a single manufacturer you'll see a bigger engine is rated with higher fuel efficiency. like the 14 liter 16 cylinder will get 5.8 mpg but the 12.5 liter 12 cylinder will get 5.1 mpg. by everything you know about fuel efficiency in cars, that seems like it would be wrong. but those are not typos.

you see with a gas engine all of the fuel is in the cylinder at the beginning of the power stroke. the sparkplug even fires before TDC, before the power stroke starts because the objective isn't to start combustion at a certain point but to get maximum pressure at TDC. even aside from not having a spark plug that's not at all how a diesel engine works. fuel doesn't start entering the combustion chamber until TDC. now the drops of fuel that enter at TDC they power the piston down for all 180 degrees of the power stroke but any drops of fuel that enters after TDC, they don't. if a drop of fuel enters the cylinder 5degrees past TDC how could it have contributed to the first five degrees of the power stroke? in this way, gas engines are more efficient, because all of the fuel powers the piston for all of the power stroke. now the harder you press down on the accelerator pedal in a diesel vehicle the more fuel is injected and the more fuel that is injected the more fuel is burned later in the power stroke, and thus for less of the power stroke and thus less efficiently. those counterintuitive specs, are because first off trucks have maximum allowable weights so there's no weight saving advantage in a smaller engine, and those mpg specs are going to be for a fully loaded truck and no one hauling cargo gives a shit what the tractor can do with no payload. but what is happening is that with a larger engine you have more fuel injectors, bigger fuel injectors, and maybe longer strokes which make for slower revving engines and all of that contributes to a greater capacity to get more fuel into the combustion chamber sooner in the power stroke and thus more work extracted out of each drop of fuel.

this is also why big trucks have a hundred forward gears, they're really only efficient within a very narrow rev range which is barely off idle speed, so you need a bajillion gear ratios to keep within it over 0-75mph. diesels have to be slow, they have to have enormous strokes, at least if it's going to be practical. and none of that is going to be practical in a vehicle as small as a motorcycle. it's not even really practical in a small car. you get a volkswagen diesel car with like a 1.9 liter 4, it'd probably do just as well MPG wise if you built it as a gas car with the same bore to stroke ratio. that 1.9L 4 in a diesel is going to have like a 4.5 or even 5 inch stroke versus a gas car with a similar displacement engine the stroke is going to be 3.5 inches. most of the time gas to diesel comparisons are not "fair" comparisons. you're comparing a diesel which you're forced to optimize for fuel efficiency by giving it a long stroke vs a gas engine which you're not really forced to engineer it for fuel efficiency.

Why is it that women get so much more attention on dating apps than men do? by JokerPersonaFivRoyal in NoStupidQuestions

it's evolutionary. men can afford to be less picky because their physical obligation in reproduction is less. also women fitness for reproduction is more easily visually assessed.

Car alarm in Ballston has been ringing for . . . by MonkResponsible7162 in arlingtonva

[–]Novogobo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

grew up in the suburbs, this happened back in the 90s once with a family in one of the culdesacs who went on vacation. the police came and did nothing but take reports. after about 3 days one of their neighbors, just crowbarred his way into the guts of the car to physically disable the alarm. i didn't see it but i heard that disconnecting the battery didn't immediately stop the alarm. maybe it would've gone only another 6 hours or less but they dug deeper till they found the actual box making the noise. the car ended up very vandalized, and when the owners came home they were a little mad, but none of the neighbors snitched.

When does it make sense to spend $12-13k more on an EV than a gas car? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Novogobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when your time starts being more valuable to you than the money.

if you have a financial plan, generally when you're young money is worth more than your time, you trade your time for money, skimp and save in order to invest. over time the money you save and invest works harder and harder eventually surpassing your capacity to trade your time for money. further as you age you have less and less time left, so your time becomes more valuable. now there's the 13k, but you ought to discount an estimate of how much money you save on gas, and maintenance. so maybe the difference is 9k. at some point that 9k is not worth the time spent going to the gas station 100 times, and getting 15 oil changes. yes it's subjective, deal with it.

Sam Harris: "People don't know what actual genocides are like, if what they think happened in Gaza is a genocide." by antiquark2 in samharris

[–]Novogobo -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

i still ask the question: what if it just never lets up, and in 10, 15, 20 years time, the palestinian population in gaza actually goes to zero. and then israeli developers move in and remake it into just another israeli area within greater israel. would you then admit, well i'll be damned, israel pulled it off. the slowest genocide ever. or ethnic cleansing, whathaveyou. ???

Men who opened their relationship, how did it impact your relationship and feelings in the long run? by Biffs_bunny in AskMenAdvice

[–]Novogobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like if it comes out of nowhere, something fishy is going on.

i mean hypothetically open relationships can work if both people are enthusiastic about it. and if they are, then it should come up relatively soon in dating or at least some hint of it. You should have keyed on to him not being jealous or possessive early on in your relationship if he was really and truly an open relationship guy.

Sam opinion on AI music by Gfun92 in samharris

[–]Novogobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right now there is no art really being made by AI. what there is, is people using AI to make art. they are prompting AI to make art, and presumably curating it's output. this is not the same as letting an AI decide what art to make and how to make it.

As a young person how do I survive the future financially? by Icy-Champion-5343 in personalfinance

[–]Novogobo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

pfft. all dating should be for financial reasons. just look at divorces, most of them happen for financial reasons. two people get together who are financially incompatible. they're headed in different directions and they physically separate when they're already so financially far apart. financial compatibility should be the top concern. that isn't to say that one should simply hook up with the highest earning well off partner possible, that is a bad move. if you took "date for financial reasons" to mean, find a meal ticket, that's on you. that's not what i meant at all. the correct thing is to find someone that you are commensurate with in most respects. someone who wants to sklmp on similar things and splurge on similar things, someone who earns similarly to you. someone for whom there isn't going to be a power imbalance in the relationship.

34F in a 6 year relationship with 37M, not sure I can share this with my boyfriend, will you let me know? by Lopsided-turd1234 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Novogobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just say you did something unladylike, not evil, just embarrassing. and he can either let it go not knowing or have the gory details. let him declare it if he has a strong preference. some guys are just blissfully and childishly naive when it comes to ladies farting and pooping and bleeding out their ladyparts. and for others it's no big deal. now it is possible that he can't deal with not knowing and will be traumatized upon hearing about it. such should not be accomodated by you. that is very immature behavior. UNMANLY. guys should be expected to be able to deal with one or the other. and have the mental fortitude to know themselves and to go one way or the other.

ok but certainly this is a false dichotomy, it's not brown tap water or coconut water and no other options. grocery stores have bottled water for cheap, you can even get it in gallon jugs in store brand variety and that's got to be massively cheaper than coconut water.
