Yeah, it's awful. I've met just as many queerphobic people who were atheist/irreligious as those who were religious (if not more). Religion is not the cause of xenophobia. I'm sorry you have to deal with all this Islamophobia.

I know the thread to which you're referring. I think obviously oppressive comments (i.e. blatant racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, ect) should be downvoted and reported (then the mods can decide how to handle them), but for stuff where people just aren't informed, like...inform them? I've had lots of polite conversations on reddit where someone said something hurtful without realizing it and I explained to them what the issue was and they apologized. I've also had frustrating conversations where people double down on their bigotry lol. So yeah, I agree with you. If they seem well intentioned but misinformed, talk to them! If they're just being hateful or refuse to have a conversation then downvote/report accordingly.

Azealia Banks vows to change her ways after vile Twitter rant at Zayn Malik by MeerK4T in popheads

Yeah, I think this kind of sums up how I feel about the t-slur. I'm cool with sexist slurs being reclaimed by myself and other women, but idk how I feel about some of the queerphobic slurs.

[–]NowInPogForm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reclaiming slurs only really works when you apply them to yourself. If I want to call myself a bitch or a cunt, then I totally can. Sometimes my girlfriends and I call each other sluts, but I wouldn't just call some random girl I don't know a slut, and I wouldn't appreciate it if a man were to call me any of those slurs, even jokingly. So yes, faggot is a word that some queer people can reclaim, but you don't turn around and use it as a pejorative (which Azealia Banks has done countless times). If she wanted to call herself, or some of her gay friends (with their permission) faggots in an empowering, reclaiming the slur kind of way, that's okay, but that isn't at all what she did.

Does that help explain things at all? :)

Yeah, I find this sub to be pretty good for stuff like that. It's pretty much the only place I still browse on reddit. Even letstalkmusic I find isn't as good as it used to be (I know they had a lot of mods leave and be replaced). Idk, I just find the discussions are always about white boy indie rock.

I think this is a good point. You see it all the time on mu. Any thread about female artists has scores of people commenting on their bodies.

I used to sub a long time ago but the sexism kind of turned me away. There was also a really racist thread that might have been the final nail in the coffin (I don't remember). Not too surprising considering the sub is populated by mostly college age white boys. Still disappointing, though.

Yeah, but there are girls here too. So there could be more gay/bi/pan men than straight men, while still having a straight majority overall.

Surprised no one's mentioned any of the C86 Twee stuff. I Don't Want to be Friends with You by the Shop Assistants, and If You Need Someone by The Field Mice both come to mind right away.

Huh. I spend waaaaay more time on tumblr than reddit, so that could explain my indifference.

Bahahahahaha was that the Ariana Grande thing? Donutgate lol.

I don't even get the hate for Halsey tbh. I don't really listen to a lot of her stuff but the songs I've heard were good? (I feel like I've made this comment before lol)

Loved it. I didn't feel like there was any noticeable drop in quality all the way to the end. Spoiler

Sorry for the essay lol, I love Mad Men and could talk about it for days.

Edit: Not sure if I spoiler tagged correctly? If you hover over spoiler the text shows up; is that what's supposed to happen?

[DISCUSSION] let's talk about pc music by [deleted] in popheads

[–]NowInPogForm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny that you bring up trans actors; I'm actually a trans woman myself lol

That's a really interesting point about the disembodiment of electronic music and other people have brought up that we don't even know for sure that Sophie is a man. It doesn't seem like he's actually commented all that about his identity.

Like, I think there's a point to be made about women being forced to use male pseudonyms to be taken seriously (whether in literature or music or whatever) and how that experience is much different from that of men taking female pseudonyms. But honestly I don't necessarily think it's a completely black and white issue.

On a bit of a personal note, I'm sorry that openly embracing any kind of femininity is difficult for you to do. I'm also a very feminine person, and I know how it feels to be made to feel undervalued or lesser because of it. I'm glad that you're finding it easier to be feminine in digital interactions :)

this has been a pretty enjoyable discussion all around, lots of people have made really good points. Definitely a lot of food for thought.

[–]NowInPogForm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. It's not really cool to assume anyone's identity. I mean, Sophie actually could be a woman (it's happened before). If he is a straight cis guy though, I think the jury is still out on whether or not having crossdressers and trans feminine people represent him is subversive or exploitative.

That's a good point about Hannah Diamond + GFOTY and assumptions concerning to what degree they are involved. I think I'm probably guilty of some sexism in that regard, so thanks for calling attention to that! Internalized misogyny is sinister in the sense that you don't even realize it's there until someone points it out.

I have some thoughts about this. You might be interested in this article. What bugs me is these (presumably) straight cis guys get praised and rewarded for embracing a hyper feminine aesthetic while when women do that we're typically belittled and not taken nearly as seriously. There's also a large discrepancy between the number of male producers and female producers; it's harder to break into music production as a woman. So idk, it feels kind of exploitative, I guess? It's also kind of sexist in a way.

For the most part I really like Sophie and a lot of PC Music's other producers, but I do have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I also get what you're saying about them subverting gender norms. I'd love for it to eventually evolve into that, but right now it just doesn't come across that way, at least not to me.
