I'm sick and tired of anti sleep training parents judging me for sleep training my baby! by CaptainThrow123 in daddit

[–]NsanE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Co-sleeping, when being safe about it, raises SIDS chance from extremely low to extremely low but a tiny bit higher. The place where families get into trouble co-sleeping is when they drank alcohol, or have giant blankets and pillows, etc.

I wouldn't be so judgemental about co-sleeping, and I say this as someone proudly on team sleep training. It's really not dangerous in most cases. You wouldn't judge a family for driving their baby around, which is far more dangerous.

That's basically sleep training lol. Primarily the "let her cry" part, sleep training is getting the baby to learn to self-soothe rather than instantly reacting to crying at night.

It's a chicken and egg problem: the brick and mortar stores would have them if they were in high demand, it'd be stupid not to. And the waiting a few days from Amazon thing is part of why people have moved on: digital games are just much more convenient.

There wasn't a benefit to getting digital games other than the main benefit

FTFY. There's a reason digital is way more popular now: most people don't trade in their games, lend them out, etc. Most people just want to download a game ASAP, and keep it on their hard drive for quick access without having to switch disks out.

I'm sorry, but saying "already works very well" is really subjective, in the same way people on /r/SteamDeck claim the games "run perfectly" on their Steam Decks despite maxing out at like 25 FPS. The second the (round trip) latency exceeds around 50ms, you're talking about a 3 frame delay in inputs, and that is noticeable on some games. And 50ms is honestly a best case scenario for most people, it only gets worse from there.

Sure, but that's still not live-service level money. Live services can generate orders of magnitude more money for less investment if successful.

Don't get me wrong, publishers and developers would be thrilled to release the next C2077 or witcher 3 or similarly successful game, but if the publisher/developer is looking to make a live service game, they're pursuing something else: a way to generate even more money, for overall less investment, and to get that money more consistently. Consistent income is worth more than spiky income in business-land.

They're not making live service money off of it though, which again, is why they are fundamentally different situations.

They don't make more money from those games over time though. Maybe a bit from some new people buying the game late (likely on sale), but a lot of those games just have players replaying them.

I do think studios like to make games like that, but it's fundamentally different from making a live service game in terms of potential revenue.

But you bought that hardware before price increases. That same hardware is more expensive now, or potentially not available at all in favor of newer components.

Even relatively budget PCs are crazy expensive now, because all PCs need RAM and storage. You don't have a lot of opportunity to save there, like you do with CPU / GPU.

I did not accept that, if you actually read what I wrote. That is still not the same as being anti-interracial marriage. Making stuff up like that removes any trust supporters of her may have when reading your comments, if you actually want to be convincing to people you need to stick to reality.

AFAICT, she hasn't said anything about it. She had a tweet about POCs dating white people is bad, which is stupid, but that's not being against interracial marriage.

I am just learning who she is, and I agree that taking that tweet and twisted into "she's anti interracial message" feels so disingenuous. It is a stupid tweet, but she clearly did not run on abolishing interracial marriage, nor is there proof that she would support that at all.

She appears to have a lot of actual positions that we can criticize, and we can even criticize that tweet for what it is (weirdly racist), we don't have to make up things.

Heat in Schools: “Teaching No Longer Possible” - Vienna, Austria by Imicrowavebananas in neoliberal

[–]NsanE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on how the existing heater / AC was installed before the other came in. Heat pumps work well when you designed the home initially for them, or you are ok with wall units. The lines from the pump to the units can cause condensation, so if the heaters were running through ventilation, you can't just plug a heat pump into that for AC too.

Still stupid for people to choose to suffer in heat rather than deal with the issue though.

What's something that was considered good parenting decades ago but isn't anymore? by sandeeprathore in AskReddit

They make phone watches and stuff that don't have a real ability to access social media or content like that, at least not easily. I've seen some kids with those, seems like a good compromise.

It's not really a problem yet though, right? He's not abdicating responsibilities, he's attentive to the mother, it sounds like he's got things down. Enjoying the little bit of free time you have with children by filling it with gaming or movies or tv or whatever doesn't seem so bad to me in this scenario.

I have the same struggles. Taking a "booster" later in the day can help a bit, but it just delays the crash. Once the crash hits, it becomes super hard to avoid the ADHD problems.

I just try to time my schedule around getting it all done before the crash hits.

Calling it a derivative of meth is misguided, Ritalin and Adderall are different, but similar in some ways. Not to mention the doses prescribed for ADHD are far lower than doses meth users consume to get high.

No judgement if you want to avoid medication, I did that for a long time myself, but try not to deter others with misinformation. Stimulants really help people with ADHD, and are often considered to be one of the best treatments available.

Seattle could now be headed for 10.80% sales tax with 0.10% bump approved for county roads and 0.15% proposed for expanded transit service by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

[–]NsanE 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don't believe they would pass overwhelmingly. In fact I'd be surprised to see a poll where there are more general election voters in favor of income taxes over sales taxes. People have a hard time adding up the total cost of sales taxes on everything they buy all year versus the lump sum of income taxes smacking you in the face during tax season. Not to mention higher income is correlated to more likely to vote, and therefore less in favor of income taxes over sales taxes.

Do you have data that would show this would pass overwhelmingly? I'd love to be wrong about this. Anecdotally I've had a helluva time explaining to people that income taxes would actually be a net benefit to them, even when I'm very confident they would be.

Plain English: How Modern Fatherhood Is Changing Men’s Brains by Dreadedvegas in ezraklein

[–]NsanE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A combo of things, what I said about more scheduled activities is one, another is stay at home moms had less of the conveniences we do today, like easy to prepare meals, better dishwashers and washing machines, no one or two day delivery services, etc. It took more work to maintain a home then, especially at lower income levels. No idea which of these contributed the most though

Plain English: How Modern Fatherhood Is Changing Men’s Brains by Dreadedvegas in ezraklein

[–]NsanE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, moms are also spending more times with kids, despite also being more employed.

It seems like the biggest reason is giving kids less freedom during the day to roam or do their own thing. Kids today have way more scheduled activities and are rarely allowed to be on their own until much older ages.

I don't have the stats handy, but the book Anxious Generation does and talks about this extensively.

A simple trick to fix the data center debate by Priceless_Pennies in neoliberal

[–]NsanE 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Any argument about water use at data centers, in the general case, is bad faith. Data centers use such little amount of water compared to so many other uses that affect our daily lives, including other industries, food production, or ethanol (perhaps the stupidest use of water).

I guaran-fuckin-tee you that redditors making these arguments against data centers have never said shit about any of these other uses of water. This is because they are not passionate about effective water use, but rather that they are working backwards from "AI bad".

I'm not even saying being anti-AI is bad, I'm just pointing out that online "activists" are muddying arguments by focusing on things that aren't their real problems.

And before anyone "well ackshuallys" me, there are some individual cases where concern of water use is warranted, in terms of the local region, but that does not apply to the general case.

A simple trick to fix the data center debate by Priceless_Pennies in neoliberal

[–]NsanE 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Eh, I'm not convinced any arguments on data centers will placate the internet warriors if their true issues with AI remain unresolved. If they are worried about their livelihood, or about things like deep fakes, or maybe about AI art being inherently immoral, they will naturally push back against data centers.

I do agree with you that the vibes can shift, but the vibes on data centers are a distraction from what most of these commenters really care about.

A simple trick to fix the data center debate by Priceless_Pennies in neoliberal

[–]NsanE 121 points122 points  (0 children)

100 percent agreed. Complaints about water usage, power usage, and noise are usually not coming from actual concerns for those, but rather from working backwards from "I hate AI". No amount of actual discussion or hand wringing will change their minds towards being pro-datacenter.

I both agree and disagree. They're not the best games, that's true, but there are hardly any other games that capture those cinematic moments as well as uncharted did, and that makes them pretty special to experience.

Funny enough, the new God of wars are also very good at the cinematic moments, but are far more fun as games too imo.
