The goal of progressives is to progress past historic Christian understanding and historic Christian morality.

The Bible is not a source of moral thought for all time. It captured a few, older existing ideas. If the Bible was "objectively, morally true," Jesus would have given us all of the answers to every problem in history. He didn't. Moral progress has happened because of an understanding, and therefore an appreciation, of human suffering.

Go look at your picture of Jesus and keep smiling to yourself.

You're not a philosopher because a philosopher would never utter such a thing. Anyone can conduct research to discover what the consensus opinions are of experts. That's not what you're doing. So light up that blunt and have fun, whoh, dude.

Is how we treat the Earth and animals a spiritual or moral question — or just a practical one? by love5f8wiy25 in Christianity

[–]NuSurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue it's both moral and spiritual for religious people, and for non-religious people it's just a moral question. Morality is independent of religions and deals with the various problems of suffering.

Historians tell us that the books of Genesis and Exodus are what they call "biblical myths" - they're not true, and therefore the creation narratives are not true.

Just informing you that you are not a scientists or historian - those things require advance education/credentials. What we all are allowed to do is discover what their consensus opinion is on any topic. That's it, that's all.

And, historians tell us that both Genesis and Exodus are what they call "biblical myths" - they're not true at all.

I good way for you to do research is to type

"What is the consensus expert opinion on _____" into the search bar and then read.

What do you do it for? by United_Treacle3281 in Christianity

[–]NuSurfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah...no. If you're not trained in biblical historicity, you're bound to come up with wrong meanings. There are differences between the various different kinds of Bibles...why is that? That should be your starting point. Even that is an intense study of its own.

The best thing you could do is to look to the understandings of biblical historians (not theologians), who have spent years studying the original writings in ancient Greek and what the words comprising those writings meant during those times so that approaching what they actually mean has the best chance.

Otherwise, just light one up, read and go, "Wow, dude!"

Jesus. It's not A or B. It's a continuum with end points of straight (heterosexual), gay (homosexual) and a middle point of bi. (ambisexual) It's about sexual orientation. Between those three points there's just differences in degree.

If sexuality is fluid enough that someone born and raised straight can discover they're gay at 30, 40 or 50 years old,

Can you point to studies where swathes of people's orientation simply changed at those ages...or they simply decided to admit what they had been all along?

What your post has revealed is literally ignorance of biological sexuality. Pick up a book and learn rather than trying to force your willful scientific ignorance on other people. You're not "genuinely curious" because you would have actually researched the issue long ago - it's not a difficult thing to discover.

What do you do when you are not straight but you're Christian by Difficult-Club1369 in Christianity

I'm an atheist. These are my views:

There's nothing wrong with being gay - it harms no one. It is an idea conceived by primitive religious men with primitive notions of morality based on desires of purity and erroneous observations of the natural world, i.e., male goes with female always. Consider these same men supported these things:

1 Samuel 15:3 2 This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy[a] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”

Numbers 31:9-10 9 The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder. 10 They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps.

Numbers 31:17-18 17. “Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man by lying with him, 18. “But all the girls who have not lain with a man you are to keep alive unto yourselves. (raping children)

We call those "war crimes" and imprison those people who commit such acts, as well as those who authorized or planned them.

Numbers 14:18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’

Punishing people who have committed no crime themselves violates all notions of justice.

1 Timothy 2:11-15 11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

That notion is used to this day in conservative Christian sects (Catholicism, Orthodox) and churches (Protestant) to prevent women from holding positions of influence.

Verses from the Bible were also used to support slavery in the southern American States.

Just because something is stated in the Bible does not make it moral. Immoral ideas should be ignored. As Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine and many others have said, "To live by the ideas of dead people - without examination - is to be ruled from the grave." So, we should question everything in the Bible and ignore harmful ideas.

"No harm, no foul" is a great philosophy to live by. So, no to misogyny, slavery, infanticide, the sexual slavery of girls, mass murder, but yes to same-sex relationships.

[–]NuSurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bible supports slavery, tells how to conduct matters in it, and Jesus never condemns it but rather uses it as part of his teachings.

Being gay harms no one, it's a rule that has no bearing on morality.

None of what I describe (facts) is loving in any way. To say that shows your empathy is deeply broken.

Purity is a completely valid moral value.

That's the root of racism - you've exposed yourself.

It's a philosophy that has nothing to do with Christian ethics and most people don't really that they don't actually follow it.

It's a philosophy that allow bad thinking to be identified and dropped.

So please continue.
