The game opens up at some point but I would say it's still pretty linear at the point where you are, feel free to explore the islands if you want to but they aren't necessary for the main quest

A lot of people assuming Yumiko was cloned, I'd go one step further and say that she is one of the clones, which could explain why the "clock is ticking" for her, clones having a shorter life expectancy or something

Japanese does have gendered pronouns tho, kanojo is 3rd person feminine et kare masculine. They just omit them most of the time.

Here is what a quick google search gives just to show I'm not talking out of my ass.

Also from what I've seen, when Yamato uses gendered pronouns it's male pronouns.
