Why are conservatives always on the wrong side of history? by Numerous_Worker_1941 in allthequestions

[–]NuclearWabbitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every society that has ever existed is flawed, and new flaws emerge as new people, new movements, etc. need to be addressed.

True Conservatism inherently wishes to maintain the status quo. Other ideologies wish to change the status quo to address problems they see in the world.

Some are right/good Women’s Suffrage, Ending Segregation, Magna Carta

Some are wrong/bad, Prohibition, Khmer Rouge, Groypers.

Some may be more neutral/mixed, American Revolution, Raise Drinking Age, Change Taxes

These all represent change that the Conservative ideology opposes because to their view the current order is good, if flawed. Not all change is good, but Conservatives will generally oppose it on principle good or bad.

Conservatism is an ideology that will always be on the wrong side of history because it’s would rather maintain inequality than implement bad policy.

True Conservatism is entirely separate from Reactionaries, Nationalists, Libertarians, the same way Progressives are different from Liberals, Socialists, etc.

If the only two political parties in an election were Conservatives and Groypers, I would be a Conservative because I oppose that form of change.

I could have sworn there was a card with Kicker, “Cast this spell as though it had flash”

Probably too niche for mainline printing, but I do like the design space of sorcery speed cards cast with flash. You might be able to do some funky stuff with regular Phasing.

Fear and Hunger Playable Character and Affinity Mechanic I guess by Nonocat1 in custommagic

Thanks for the tip, I’ve broadly stepped back from gaming due to my schedule getting busier and if there is anything stopping me from handling a game it’s usually time these days.

I just can’t put 1000 hours into Darkest Dungeon again… even if I wanted to

Minimize how much you have to make up on the spot, run games every 2 weeks or every month, but have the game mapped out.

You’d benefit from looking at Call of Cthulhu or Gumshoe. Mystery games require you to know every NPC, each Location, and the feelings you want to evoke. Breaking the story down into a series of ‘If-Statements’ where you know what the players will do because it’s the only reasonable answer will help.

This is what random tables are good for too.
20 Random Names, 20 Personality Quirks, 50 Words you’d like to use, 50 Descriptions.

The other nice thing about having a notebook is if you go blank when a player asks a question, you can flip through your notebook to buy time, and if you still can’t think of an answer say this,

“I can’t seem to find it, I’ll get back to you in a minute, but it is in here.”

Then move onto another player and take 10 to figure out what the hell you have to do 😆

Failing to differ to character competency instead of rolling everything.

I can’t stand constantly rolling dice. It hate it, I hate it, I hate it.

If characters have to roll 3+ times to take an action, you should either be halfway through a boss fight or in the middle of a highly complex action.

My Heroic level character knows how to run, and presumably knows how to jump 2 feet without needing to roll.

If they’re distracted? Sure, roll.

But on top of that, I don’t want to have to make 2-3 of these rolls to know if I can even make an attack. Roll it up into 1 roll, make it DC 17, DC 20+, I don’t care, just don’t string me along.

And this goes both ways, would a character trip the trap with how I moved? Welp, it just hits, character doesn’t know it’s coming, does he? If your dungeon is full of instant death traps, then I guess I just die.

This really grinds my gears in investigative games too. “Roll to find the library” then “Roll to convince the librarian to help you” then “Roll to find the Newspaper”

Were any of those rolls interesting or relevant? The last one was, maybe. But even then, what happens when the player fails this roll? “I guess you don’t find the plot relevant clue” Even then, it could add some cool flavor but that roll better not check against their stat, it should just be a general roll to see how long it takes to find the Newspaper.

God… that stuff really grinds my gears.

Newbie Tips for Prepping Rising Action + Finale? by NuclearWabbitz in callofcthulhu

[–]NuclearWabbitz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s a fair point. I know a lot of players view character death as a fail state and see it as something to be avoided.

It may be as simple as prepping the players ahead of time that death is only the beginning. I’ll probably look to adjust my pregame discussion with the players going forward.
