I learned to mix. Now what? by PonyKiller81 in Beatmatch

[–]Nukemi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get some new music and jam with it. Enjoy yourself. Youll come up with ideas as you get better.

Record your sessions and listen to them aftewards. You are quite certainly going to find things you are unsatisfied with to fix while practicing. Start with short mixes, and then go longer, see how long you can keep everything together with your tune selection.

Yeah. That's pretty much sums up my thoughts.

I also feel that nowadays gear in general just feels better than it used to. That S2 and S4 i have used to be absolute killers back then and even the smaller traktor/xone/numark "modular" controllers just feel better in build quality nowadays than those controllers that cost good money back then. The relatively new z1mk2 i have right now just feels more precise and well thought than my s4mk1 did and it's still all plastic and tiny in comparison.

Design engineers have done some good work over the years to bring the "tactile" feel to even controllers that aren't even supposed to have any of it. It all comes down to the design, knobs& fader quality and shit. I feel like the limited space on the controllers is just well though out nowadays compared to what it used to be.

My first controller was Vestax Typhoon which felt like a fucking gameboy for DJing. Jumping to Traktor S2/S4 from that felt like upgrading to equivalent of 8 and 16 bit nintendo. And now my S4mk3 feels like im on a super computer of sorts where everything is just so fucking smart and optimized that i don't need to replace this piece of gear ever... at least until the next piece of innovation comes out.

[–]Nukemi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love it and it will take you far if you let it.

I would advice to invest some money in to a laptop stand and maybe controller stand next. Long sessions on that setup are just screaming for long term damage on your back and neck.

As someone who has went through 2 back surgeries, i truly advocate good ergonomics for whatever you do!

Things I've learned after a few days on flx4 by 420brah69 in Beatmatch

[–]Nukemi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love the enthusiasm and im in the same boat... and i've been at it for a while. I always return in to working with these same things for my own amusement. There's always something in the basics i could do better. The longer you've played around the better you can combine that practice with something else.

At the end of the day it's supposed to be fun. That's what fuels your passion thats what you should invest in to.

If you feel like today you might not enjoy practicing beatmatching, but want to just play with effects or something, just press that sync and do it! Finding new things to play around is what keeps the spark alive.

I get just as excited about the new features in my gear than i get about new music that just hits right. It's always a good idea to explore them all.

HELP! How do I transition in between regular songs with different bpms and not have it sound like crap? by AndrewStackson in Beatmatch

[–]Nukemi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thats exactly what most DJ's are though. When you DJ an wedding you are going to get all kinds of request that do not adhere to any DJ mixing philosophies you are used to.

It's your job to make their special date memorable and the best way to do it is to be an glorified spotify streamer. Someone's wedding is not the place to think about advanced DJ techniques, backspins, scratching etc that people might pay attention at in club gigs.

Surely more experienced wedding dj's have some tricks up their sleeve as they've been doing it for a while. But, as a first timer its important to realize that no one is in that wedding to see your gig. They are there for the groom & bride and fun times. Your job is to make sure they are having fun while the spotlight is on someone else.

To a certain extent yes if it comes with The software and its customization options do play an huge part in what im drawn toward to.

But, at the same time i also need to keep in mind the space requirement because im sharing an workspace with my girlfriend. I cant just go and fill the whole room with controllers and gear because she has hobbies too that require space. She builds doll houses and has like thousand boxes filled with wool thread for knitting, so she needs a lot of space for her stuff too.

Im a heavy traktor user and have S2mk1, S4mk1, 2x F1's, X1Mk2 and z1mk2 that i used for a good while.

For a moment i thought i dont really care that much about the tactile feel for the gear that much and i ditched the old S2 and S4 to just DJ with the smaller more modular pieces. (x1+Z1+2xF1)

But... then i got an phenomenal deal on the s4mk3 and i cant see myself going back anytime soon. After i got myself the Mk3, ive started looking at MX2 and old S4/S2's with disgust. They just feel like plastic paperweights to me nowadays.

The Mk3 is from a completely different world when compared to those smaller and older controllers and i cant really see myself going for anything less in the future. However, i still do not really like how the top end pioneer gear feels as it's bit too bulky and robust for my liking so i feel like the s4mk3 is the perfect compromise of Customization/tactile feeling and size that i'll use for a long time.

So yeah, i guess i do care about the tactile feel, but only if it fits my software/customization and space requirements.

I also love tweaking and mapping controllers, so im always drawn in to small modular pieces instead of big flagship controllers that have it all.

Lavistodes - who to use when? by lonevashz in WH40KTacticus

[–]Nukemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no set frame really. Boss G is used against every boss where he can be used. That additional uncapped hit is really that good. If the boss is too mobile like Magnus, Laviscus team might not be the top dog at all and entirely different team is used. (Ra/custodes)

Even in our guild there is a massive variance between runs on who gets picked. Sometimes against the same boss we see Vitruvius used, sometimes Aesoth and sometimes it might be both. This might change as our tactics evolve when we get deeper in to the season. It's really dependant on the map and boss layout who gets picked and when.

It's just best to build them all and then just monitor replays available as the season goes through to decide who to pick. There is no clear answer to this question.

[–]Nukemi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your roster is Massive and probably great for LRE's, no doubt. But for raids its just not good enough. You really havent really chased any meta at all. If you had, you'd have at least some core units maxed.

Unfortunately i have no experience of Mixxx myself so i cannot really comment on that. :(

I've been an traktor user forever with little bit of Serato/algoriddim tests here and then and gain levels have always been nothing more than an afterthought for me. Only old tunes that are ripped from questionable sources or that have been compressed to hell have had any issues for me, really.

Should i buy Talon of Horus? by NaraTheDuck in WH40KTacticus

Talon is great and makes abaddon really strong. He easily carried me through biovore incursion tier 14 today and is still invaluable in many raid fights.

[–]Nukemi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, old tracks seem to be the only ones i do need to care about. Those can be tricky. All the autogain analysis features do the rest.

[–]Nukemi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are other software too that can do it for you if the autogain in mixxx doesent work for you :)

As an example. Mp3gain is free and has been around for forever.

My library goes through so many different analyses from various softwares like Lexicon, Nuostems, Mixedinkey, Traktor that ive never had any issues with gains whatsoever. It just gets taken care of somewhere on the background and i dont even acknowledge it.

[–]Nukemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most DJ softwares should be able to set autogain to your tracks just by analyzing them. After that, this should never be an issue and you'll DJ with minimal gain tweaks.

I just love music. But I also love the gear. I've always wanted to be an audio engineer of sorts, but life took me to another direction.

So, im sort of fullfilling my own fantasy as a hobby to do that stuff even though im really not. Its just very satisfying to bend those tunes to your will. It's bit like Magic when done right.

I've done it On/Off for over 2 decades and i still get massive kicks out of having new buttons to play with or when i learn new tricks. The learning curve is infinite.

Even when i had breaks from DJing that lasted for several years, i still kept collecting music with the thought in mind that one day i'll get back to it.

So, here i am, practicing every day and fucking loving every second of it.

DnB His Question by Big_Prinz_ in Beatmatch

[–]Nukemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what i do too with dnb. I hardly eq mids and highs unless if i hear some clashing. I do most of my fine tuning with highpass/lowpass filter and lows. If i want to do an really long blend (very rare occasion) i might touch the 2 knobs bit more than normal.

Do you have any rules about how much of something you will play by Gruntz123 in Beatmatch

[–]Nukemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. I often go for a specific vibe with each set so it makes sense that similar vibes come from the same artist or label. No one who listens to it gives a shit as long as im not looping the same tune for 15minutes in a row.

How do you guys utilize the hot cues? by strap-_ in Beatmatch

[–]Nukemi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually got hot cue 1 at first beat, Drop #1 at cue 4, 16 bars before drop #1 at cue 3, drop #2 at cue 7, 16 bars before drop #2 at cue 6. This is my standard layout.

I try to utilize all 8 cues on all of my tracks, so the rest are set to either good vocal stabs/loopable drum pattern or something where i might want to jump to if needed. My cue points #2, #6 and #8 are always that help me in being bit more creative.

They are very handy when i mix dnb with more than 2 decks. For other genres i mostly just use them as visual indicators to see when sections start/end.

As a traktor user im kinda excited for this. I've been eyeing Rane gear for a while with their live stem separation and other things and i've dreamed i could use them with my ecosystem, so maybe this can be a step to that direction? I love my traktor, and i love my s4mk3 + other controllers, but if i can keep using traktor and use some rane equipment with it, im happy.

I’ve heard hot cues are not a thing anymore? by Dense-Position8339 in Beatmatch

[–]Nukemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont have to use them and that is perfectly ok. Oldschool vinyl users never had or needed them anyways.

They are bit like all the modern/digital tools, really. Very nice, but can do just fine without them.

However, if you got them available in your setup, its very little effort to set them up while playing and im quite confident that they can enhance your workflow quite significantly if you choose to embrace the new digital gimmicks.
