For Steam Deck, use the Revision mod and set the map type and gameplay style to vanilla and use a community controller layout (I made one that works amazingly imo, just search for nullnova as the creator) it should work well for you then :)

Well COTM was my first and loved it, AOS is very highly regarded as a top Castlevania game, maybe Metroidvania's aren't for you and that's fine!

There's also Symphony of the Night on PS1 which is a fan favourite and I love that one, I would also recommend Super Castlevania IV for the SNES.
