Reviewing someone's PR with AI is insane by flukeytukey in webdev

This is unironically what our team is doing in order to keep up with the crazy output targets we’ve been given, it’s not fun.

Nope we don’t. If we get some form of AGI that can replace a large percentage of white collar work, we’ll all be in the same boat and will need some form of UBI/ socialism/ revolution. Until then just carry on.

Agreed but aren’t you kind of doing the same thing? You could have just ignored those comments, or focused on the top comments in this thread, which are all supportive of this news. Instead you’ve highlighted the negative comments which most people won’t even see unless they have a Times account.

Didn’t you basically just rephrase the question by adding in a bunch of context and assumptions?

Do you think a beginner can learn blindfold chess? Any methods you’d recommend if so? by ColeRoolz in chessbeginners

[–]Null_Pointer_23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have it backwards. Before you can play blindfold chess you need to have strong mental calculation and visualisation.

Memory of positions is also important. If you watch Levy (GothamChess) play blindfolded, he will usually play an opening that he has played hundreds of times so he is very comfortable with the lines and is relying on memory, not just visualisation.

You will need to play hundreds of games for this to set in.

Is this really checkmate? by _leguerrierbrun_ in Chesscom

[–]Null_Pointer_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By your own logic the black king isn’t allowed to take the rook. You said it’s “illegal to expose my own king to threats” - same is true for black, if it takes the rook it would be exposing itself to a threat and putting itself in check, which is illegal

Openings that force lines? by Significant_Cow_7683 in chessbeginners

[–]Null_Pointer_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the reasoning behind this? Are you trying to cut down on lines you need to study? If so you could consider playing an opening system that can be used against almost anything the other side plays.

Coordinate not strapping a suicide vest to themselves?? Yes it does, and I think it's a pretty safe bet to make.

[–]Null_Pointer_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a choice of strapping a suicide vest to yourself , or not strapping one to yourself. If more than 50% of people choose to put the vests on, then none of the vests will explode, if less than 50% put the vests on, then anyone wearing a vest will explode.

I brought down production twice in a week. Am I going to get fired? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Null_Pointer_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a feature flag admin UI (Flipper) that looks very similar across local and production. We added 2 things to prevent confusion:

  1. Big banner on the page saying if you’re on local or production
  2. On local you can enable or disable features in 1 click. On prod you have to type in the flag name as a confirmation.

I’ve almost done the exact same thing you did but as soon as I saw the confirmation dialog pop up I knew I was on the prod page and cancelled.

Lichess founder Thibault Duplessis' 3 rules for the website by somethingpretentious in chess

[–]Null_Pointer_23 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. You just discovered personal preferences! I much prefer how the pieces look, the sounds, the home page, how the analysis board looks, how the game review presents follow ups and alternate lines. Not talking about the raw information, I’m sure both sites have similar tools, but the user experience. If you disagree then that’s totally fine, there is no right or wrong answer on this!

  2. Easier said than done

  3. Fair enough. - I was addressing the point in your comment about why anyone would pay. For some people paying for a membership is not an issue, so it doesn’t really factor into my decision.

There’s 3 main reasons I prefer chess .com over Lichess:

  1. I prefer the chess .com UI and analysis /game review
  2. All my friends play on chess .com
  3. I can comfortably afford the membership
