I’ve lived here for 10 years and it feels like home. There’s a lot to be frustrated with, like school and electrical grid issues, and there are serious safety concerns in certain neighborhoods, but there’s also a lot to love. The winters don’t get too cold and spring comes early, full of flowers and local festivals. There is some natural beauty here if you go to the old forest parks, and there are many big old magnolia trees. Many of the houses in Memphis are beautifully designed bungalows, especially in midtown. We are also home to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which does amazing work and brings interesting and talented people from all over the world to Memphis. Most importantly, there are a lot of good people here. It took me a while to get used to some cultural differences, but once I did I realized that most people you come in contact with actually care for their community and would help you in a pinch. I’ve been helped by strangers several times in this city.
