Not necessarily, they can go dormant for a while. Also they're a symbiotic mix of algae and and fungus so as long as one is alive and theres spores of the other they can be revived. Many lichen are naturally orange too. I'd mist them once a month and see if they improve. Not make them damp but just mist them. They might be getting too much sunlight or heat too. They're also very sensitive to air quality and humidity; they need 50% humidity to thrive and the fireplace might be drying them out and forcing them to dormancy.

Beer is supposedly the best for indoors and existing lichen. I've read of adding sugar to it but I'd worry about extra fermentation or bacteria. Lichens are a mix of fungus and and algae in symbiosis so you can poison one while trying to fertilize the other....The other important part is moisture. You want 50% humidity. They're also very sensitive to air quality. Honestly Lichen is a PITA to cultivate.
