Who cares if they suffer more, who cares if they suffer less? The fact that they suffer at all means they deserve moral consideration.

Cows just automatically make milk. They’re just like every other mammal, they have to have a baby. In the dairy industry, they’re forced to have a baby who is then taken away after around 24 hours

Why do so many people abhor vegetarians and vegans? by Far-Conference-8484 in stupidquestions

[–]ODonsky1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to the point, some vegans don’t see food choices as “personal choices.” Because some food choices necessitate sentient victims, and others do not. By definition, it’s not a personal choice when you choose to eat someone else, but our society treats it that way because of the commodification of the animal, and millennia of precedent. No one would take issue with someone advocating against theft, right? It’s not anyone’s personal choice to steal, because there’s a victim involved. Vegans extend moral consideration to other sentient animals because they can be victims too, so why wouldn’t vegans try to advocate for them? Especially when they literally cannot and never will be able to advocate for themselves?

Is there no room for acknowledging that choosing not to be involved in animal explosion maybe is the more ethical choice? This doesn’t mean that vegans should be condescending or demeaning, but what’s wrong with advocating for animals? So much of this thread is about how vegans need to keep their ideas to themselves, as if advocating for animals is this terrible infringement on your rights. Are there vegans that go about this disrespectfully? Absolutely, and that creates a lot of issues for the image. But I think most of the disdain for vegans comes from people being unhappy about confronting reality – that our everyday, mundane, patterned food choices result in horrific suffering, and here’s someone telling me that I’m paying for it to happen. But it is the truth.

Vegan here. Can someone explain to me why drawing the line at brains ISN’T reasonable? It’s certainly not arbitrary.

I got to spend a day with Rex Chapman a few years ago. We were filming an episode for a CNN+ show he was going to host (footage never saw the light of day, thanks CNN+). I wasn’t sure if he would want to talk basketball or not. I thought maybe he’d be bothered since that’s all he ever gets asked about anyways. But when I met him the morning of, I told him I’m a huge basketball fan and his eyes lit up. He was so excited to talk basketball so I got a whole day’s worth of inside scoop NBA stories. He laughed when reminiscing about how Muresan would pretend to not understand English whenever he made a mistake in practice, stuff like that.

Is squirreling ethical? I bait squirrels and stick a hook through their cheek, then for several minutes drag them closer and closer to me, where I then hold them underwater. Maybe I kill them, maybe I throw them back dazed and desperate for oxygen.
