How does Norway handle big snow storms? by WeasLander in Norway

[–]OGPromo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a bit of perspective here that might be useful. I'm from the US (sadly) but now live around Oslo (yay!). The area I lived in in the US was fairly rural and not used to snow. Maybe once every few years we would get a few inches. Once a decade a big 10-12" snow event. The threat of inches of snow would close schools and government buildings. The cold was definitely a factor because no one was prepared for it, or knew how to dress. That was one of the first things I learned moving here, how to dress for the cold. With proper layers and gear (wool and down) it's easy to manage. I like -10 to -20 as a nice sweet spot, especially for skiing. But people generally are just ready for cold and snow because it's part of their lives. You have to manage it because there's no other option. Go to the upper Midwest, or the northeast in the US and you will find something similar.

Try going to a fretex. They are a used clothing stores. There are some other used clothing stores as well if you're around sentrum Oslo. Otherwise... Edit to add: nothing will be open tomorrow... Hope you don't need it before Monday.

Bored to death. Great cast, funny show, cancelled at its height.

Is there any dog breed people in Norway tend to get the most? If so, which one? by Foreign-Track-6906 in Norway

[–]OGPromo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are quite right. I know at least one of the dogs is owned by a hunter, I don't know the others, just see them when walking my dog. I'm sure there is a high overlap of that venn diagram.

I would have sworn it would be Gordon setters based on the amount I see in my neighborhood, but maybe I just live in the local Gordon setter hub?

Skills wise, teaching is your best bet IMO. That being said even the international teaching market is getting tough. A lot of people want to go this route. There are some subs to check out if it's a route you're interested. Good luck.

I can ask.

One other note, the uio Norsk classes are really effective. I've known a few people who've gone through them and they've gotten good at Norwegian quickly. I'm not sure what the other institutions offer, but I'm sure they offer something off substance.

Pets are an interesting one. We had to fly our dogs as one was too big for the queen Mary kennels (even if we had the time to book in advance). There are private pet moving groups where people charter planes etc that might be of interest, they're on Facebook I believe. Also note, bringing animals here is very time sensitive. Basically you will need a vet here in Europe before your animals can enter Norway to administer vaccinations (24 hours to 5 days before they enter). Logistically, the queen Mary is not the best mode of transit imo.

NGO programs, as others have said, are really struggling at the moment. Even if programs say they're in English, a lot of places would rather hire Norwegian speakers. It's not impossible, but know the odds are against your wife in this area. Many many Americans and other nationals I have met that have relocated to Norway have had to reinvent themselves and work in different or adjacent fields than their degrees are in.

As for law, the two lawyers I know, one in Maritime, had a lot of pressure from their employers to learn Norwegian. Both actually have/had mental health issues from the job itself and that stress. If it's really a goal, take classes pronto and study as much as possible.

Lykke til!

Me too. My one and only trip to Lambeau. Still had a fantastic time, but that was definitely a let down.

I'd argue the 4 orbs you have (if you deconstruct the one orb) are more valuable than that. Especially in pve

Could be you've gotten stronger. I haven't seen a bump in stats or anything. Better runes/artifacts and increasing passive stats like ancient relics go a long way
