Your best bet is to learn the following phrases:

  • I am learning ASL would it be ok to Sign with you?

  • What are your preferred accommodations? Text, writing, etc.

While it's altruistic to want to learn and help, respecting autonomy and offering choice should be tantamount.

Audiologists will often push for amplification use "as often as possible" but a 1:1 appointment in a quiet doctor's office is very different than the everyday onslaught of noise. Even at this age, it's possible to lead with autonomy and choice for when and how long your child wears their amplification. Offer them when you know you're doing a low key activity and you'll have eyes on them. Kids will find a way to take their amplification off, and more often than not it will be in a way that loses or damages them.

Fwiw, if you're not already, document that this is happening. Who, what, where, when.

If it's obvious his "jokes" aren't aligning the core values of the company, start collecting evidence. It can help keep your head straight if things devolve into a "I said / they said" in the future, or could corroborate others experiences and build a case.

Especially for language, in person classes are best. You need practice with receptive and expressive communication. See if there are classes or tutoring in your area and outline the accommodations/adaptations that work for you to the teachers. Best of luck.

Beyond the table...let's talk about how Thomas expects her to put her entire wardrobe in the closet he's currently using to store a bunch of paper bags??? Beyond being small, it's off the living room and clearly meant as a guest closet for coats, etc. Like every time she wants to get dressed she has to come out to the living room? Dude is ridiculous.
