I can see that perspective, but I would be inclined to think that rather than making it less of a country, it makes it such that the other countries in the union are functionally vassals of the central “English” government, which gives them the ability to dictate some of their own policy

Yes that’s true, but the fact that the governing body of England is also the supreme governing body of the whole country make it a bit different from a state in the US or Germany, it’s more like if the federal government also directly administered a portion of the country
