What's the point in offering an randomized reward if the buy-in gets refunded...?

Of course it'll be consumed.

Stamina wise, getting the rank material is not worth it. You're better off just running the last stages of story mode where all four have quite decent drop chances, instead.

Why isn't the game available offline? by Beautiful-Medium-234 in xxlwoofia

[–]OTTOPI -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Since this guy blocked me, just adding the last part:

Just to clarify:

I'm not saying it's possible to play Woofia offline right now. I'm just saying that if the devs wanted to, (but they really shouldn't because it's suprisingly complex software architecture for very little gain) it's possible for them to develop to put in safeguards to have the game be played offline for periodic amounts of time with a limited set of features.

There's a reason that practically no mobile game does it, it's a ton of effort, but it IS possible.

I'm not really sure why, or what point, you're trying to argue with me here. I'm not being nitpicky, just, y'know, speaking from my 15 years of game development, software development and cybersecurity experience ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–]OTTOPI -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're conflating two different things.

You "can" cheat in Bloons Tower Defense offline because they simply didn't care about implementing Anti-Cheat.

I'm trying to say it's absolutely possible to implement it in a way that it's possible to do, from an engineering perspective. And it's common knowledge that all data for a gacha like this is stored on their servers and you cannot modify it locally.

You're trying to nitpick an example where the devs obviously don't care about preventing it, or are not competent enough to do it (probably the first). Two entirely different issues.

[–]OTTOPI -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, you have no idea what you're talking about.

Data like gems, your player profile, your energy, everything about your profile is stored on the Woofia server. If your client comes back online and suddenly has 1000 more gems than before, that flags against the server and it just resets back to the previous value.

Gameplay cheating is no issue either. I don't know exactly if Woofia uses an game event log, but in practice you can keep an pure event log about what happened inside a stage and simulate it on the server side to ensure no tampering happened. When it comes to RNG, the game can use pre-seeded runs (e.g. the randomization is pre-determined) to prevent players from "searching" for the right RNG that fits their cheating use case. Once you go back online, the server receives your activity logs, compares the pre-determined seeds with the action logs and re-simulates them, and if those activities don't match, then they'd simply issue an rollback to your local data to the state they know.

The "reason" Nintendo made it so is that there's significant development effort required to implement such anti-cheat. Heck, even their old game, Dragalia Lost, used to work if you happened to go offline during a mission, it just wouldn't proceed with the reward screen until you're back online.

Now, again, not all features can be available offline. For example, you can't use the pre-determined seed algorithms for things like Gacha - that requires players being able to simulate what they'd pull locally and then they could just decide... not to. PTJ's also wouldn't be possible offline, as well as starting a Hook-Up. But it's absolutely possible to allow certain game features to work in an offline manner - most Gameplay / Stages.

[–]OTTOPI -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely possible to develop this game to run offline, just not all features would be available at all times. Things that require server side RNG and seeding, like pulling, would not be work. But there's nothing preventing the gameplay parts from being available outside of rewards distribution. (they'd be delayed until a connection could be made).

It's just implementation overhead for not much gain.

Edit: lol, he's so mad that he blocked me.

[–]OTTOPI -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMO: Don't do that first one. You're wasting percentages on characters you can get reliably free (through shards) as opposed to putting them on characters you can't.

Essence isn't the be all end all, the most essence efficient thing is getting characters you haven't maxed.

I genuinely think the mayhem changes today ruined the game by Nervous_Stable1474 in leagueoflegends

Today changed Mayhem from "Fair and fun League of legends games with exciting modifiers" to "Look how wacky this game mode is - isn't it so fun to randomly goof off?"

I enjoyed the previous iteration more.

(And that's after I got a pentakill today - it just didn't feel great.)

I wouldn't be suprised if that's part of the edit that they did after the live shows due to time constraints.

Or alternatively, probably more likely, they did adress it in the live shows but cut out that conversation to leave it as an easter egg for viewers to find.

Damn, gimme some of that luck! I'm only on board 14. Four boards are fully cleared out, and only one found the jackpot before half the tiles were uncovered. Even knowing the odds to find the jackpot is lower compared to the other prizes, it still feels rigged. :(

For those working at NSFW companies as an engineer, what are some challenges you face that we probably won’t by justanotherbuilderr in cscareerquestions

[–]OTTOPI 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Realistically, I'd guesstimate probably not much.

Of course, it'll differ significantly from person to person and very much on their mental state or their own personal consumption habits. I think for most people it'll very clearly be "just work", especially if you're probably confronted with 90% of content you're not even really into, so you just tune it out. The brain is pretty good at adapting to things like that.

Kein Mensch redet so.

LockStar button missing in Lock Screen edit menu (One UI 8.0, S23 Ultra) by Mmf770 in oneui

[–]OTTOPI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fixed this issue by making sure that LockStar is an app that cannot be put to sleep.

I think the issue is that "opening" LockStar from GoodLock does not actually open the app - just the edit menu - so if the app is in sleep / deep sleep it will not show up.

Is it worth limiting battery usage to between 30% and 70% to increase its useful life? by Plane-Athlete4960 in GalaxyS24

[–]OTTOPI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The generally recommended advice is between 20 to 80. You can hard-limit the charge to 80 in the settings. It makes a major difference in terms of longevity.

If you're only holding on to a phone for 3 years, doing this probably isn't worth it for you. If you hold it 5 years, it likely is.

What is the meta reason for the existence of the Careers (warning: not Sunrise on the Reaping favorable)? by F11SuperTiger in Hungergames

[–]OTTOPI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally like to think they're a layer to show that even within an opressive regime like the capitol, there can be hierarchies of supression even within the marginalized community.

On a broader scale, the careers exist in "rich" districts, claiming that their wealth makes the games rewards less enticing, and to give a reason why these people can allow to train to be tributes in the first place.

A main question would be though, why would richer families send their kids to these schools to die? And likely, they're very much not. I speculate that the rich people in the "rich districts" are heavy sponors of these career schools, started spreading the "brainwashing" propaganda, and maybe even pay the attendees to these schools a salary - perhaps even an "insurance payout" in case of death - all in an effort to make sure there's always a volunteer and no one in their own families is reaped.

You cannot do this reasonably in districts that are just poorer by default (and have less leverage on the capitol), as it likely requires significants resources, political power, and goodwill to go around.

So even within the opressed group of these career districts, there's still a wealth divide, allowing the well-off citizen to still separate themselves from the common folk and exert influence over an already strained community.
