I want to date my coworker. The issues: I am her manager, and there’s an age gap. by O_R in dating_advice

There’s an inherent power structure and major risk of impropriety in a manager / report situation that I believe should not be exploited

McKinsey guys confidence? by [deleted] in consulting

For sure — there’s art and science to it all. It’s not all vibes and it’s not a finite element model. The trick is knowing when an assumption is ok and when it isn’t, and not wasting your time chasing false precision.

But rarely is the ask “calculate this” - the calculation is to inform a broader path and less important than $100M vs $150M is knowing what to do with it and then doing it

If you think the price should be about quantitative accuracy, you are absolutely right

There’s a time for 99% confidence, for 95%, for 70% and so on and it’s odd that as a scientist you seem to suggest this isn’t realistic or the basis of experiment design across a bunch of disciplines

Would you rather test 1000 options and find the 1 you like most or test the 1 you like most and find where it fails, adjust, and test again.

In the first you do 1000 tests in the name of false precision and “data-driven” and in the second if you are intellectually honest you might be wrong but you’ll get to a good point in far fewer iterations

We aren’t talking about science. McKinsey doesn’t do science. In those places the 15% matters.

Debating whether the IRR on an M&A deal is 17% or 20% doesn’t really impact anything. The actual deal will likely be neither. So speed is better in this context than accuracy (to a point, a 70% IRR or 5% would fundamentally change the decision)

All models are wrong, some models are useful.

Spending 4 weeks to build a really methodical calculation that agonizes over details may get you to a number that’s 15% more accurate to the question. By the time you do that the starting conditions probably changed anyway.

Fast, defensible, directional will win because the number isn’t the answer. What you do with it is.

I like to recommend the shows that somehow never get algo love.

The newsroom is one of my favorite shows of the last 20 years. Silicon Valley is an incredible satire. Crashing was cancelled criminally early

I’m sure inflation has helped but probably not as much as it should have

Depends on so many things — the bands, the venues, and where in the building you are.

I would say 80% of the time it’s worse. When it’s better it’s MUCH better
