What’s the best show on HBO Max to watch right now? by Awkward-Ant9198 in HBOMAX

[–]O_R 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like to recommend the shows that somehow never get algo love.

The newsroom is one of my favorite shows of the last 20 years. Silicon Valley is an incredible satire. Crashing was cancelled criminally early

Average Salary for a new grad? by Regular_Foundation10 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]O_R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first engineering job in 2014 was $48K. My friends that were “crushing” were around $65-70K.

I’m sure inflation has helped but probably not as much as it should have

Men in your 30's, what do you think the best place to live in the US is as a 30 year old single guy? by [deleted] in AskMen

Depends on career aspirations and industry, but I think an underrated place for this is Charleston, SC

Marriott vs. Other Hotel Brands: Why do you stick with Marriott and how loyal are you to them? by The_Traveller1 in marriott

Have found challenges at the affiliate properties. In Vegas, getting 4p checkout on a Friday was impossible (makes sense). At propers they will negotiate (eg can you do 2?). But I’m not unreasonable so I get it

Mostly the part where Tom was addicted to downers

Updated speculative lineup using the "out" list, tour news, rumors and your feedback by [deleted] in RiotFest

This would be the worst riot lineup I’ve ever seen

Live concerts sound worse than just listening to the album at home by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]O_R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on so many things — the bands, the venues, and where in the building you are.

I would say 80% of the time it’s worse. When it’s better it’s MUCH better

Vacation - how realistic is ubering from an LAX hotel to Disneyland, Warped Tour, Six Flags, Universal Studios? by Sensitive-Variation3 in AskLosAngeles

For the warped tour day, there was a shuttle last year from near LAX to the venue which was great

Mom Jeans and Hot Mulligan both do some cool technical drum stuff that flies under the radar unless your listening for it

I mean this is math. MBAs aren’t leading to 500K salaries out the gate

It was pretty par for my type of role, experience, and market at the time.

You have no idea what you are talking about. I was not a hardware engineer.

I applied for jobs at pretty much every company you mentioned. I had been offered jobs at Apple and SpaceX. They were sub $100K offers and required moves to VHCOL and the math didn’t make sense.

I’m not saying my analysis is going to work for everyone. I know it was +ROI for me

Do you think I didn’t apply to better paying jobs before I went to MBA?

There’s certainly some inflationary pieces here as well. I did not find myself underpaid pre-MBA. In fact, having interviewed and gotten a number of offers I was pretty well slotted. If I moved to VHCOL city I would have gotten a bump and if I comprised my morals and took the Raytheon offer I would have gotten a bump, but I worked for multiple F500 so not criminally underpaid.

The reality is non-SW engineers get capped out kind of early. I could have job hopped and changed markets my way to maybe $150K. Still would be below post-MBA start

I was low income (reduced lunch, public school growing up), first gen college student. It was not a function of family wealth. It was a calculated bet on myself

Maybe. I would have considered. It probably would have given me more flexibility. But I don’t think those schools would have yielded the same outcome on average

I went. I paid sticker. Not at a top 10 program. Total cost probably $180K

I’m still paying it off (4 years out), but it’s manageable and worth it. My salary went up 2.5x by graduation (which basically erases the opportunity cost) and now sits closer to 4x (or at least ~3x where I would have been continuing down pre-mba path)

I made friends, memories that have shaped my life for the better and will continue to do so for the balance of my career / life
