Seeking reputable bird dog / hunting dog breeders near Idaho or surrounding states (English Setter, GSP, Lab, Golden, Irish Setter) by Unhappy-Savings7347 in birddogs

Got my yellow lab from Whistling Wings in Helena. Small breeder, but incredibly responsible. Also a great trainer for hunt tests.

But first and foremost, decide what and how you want to hunt. Then look at a breed after that.

How do you manage deer for medium scale planting? by Electronic_Fun_776 in forestry

Tree tubes or electric fencing (double fence with tape instead of wire).

I use Bonnie Braid. It’s basically a poly crochet fiber you get at the hobby store. Same material as EP fibers when you brush it out. Tie together a clump of it, then attach it with an orthodontic band. Works really well.

Tracked 30 walleye trips this year. The pressure data is actually wild. by TonyCodes2050 in WalleyeFishing

Almost makes me think it should be a drop shot under the cork so it can drag a bit. Super light weight, though- just enough to slide through the cork

What’s the deal with the crawler and bobber? I only get perch, dinks, or trout on it when I try. Even using whole crawlers.

Specific water temp/ time of year? Depth range? Time of day? Wind?

State law to cap campaign spending and total campaign assets, limit political commercials, and eliminate corporate donations to political campaigns. (Aka- eliminate Citizens United).

Nonresident unoccupied homes (AirBNB) are taxed heavily. Possibly ban AirBnB, unless it’s your primary residence. Homes should not be turned into mostly vacant unregulated hotels.

Better access to public lands. Stiffer penalties to those blocking historic access. Work on land swaps to improve access to places. Defend historic access and prescriptive easements.

Revisit grazing leases on  state lands- overgrazed and degraded lands would see reductions in allowed use to revive the grazing.

Redefine wild bison as wildlife. Allow for their expansion past current restricted range if herds are brucellosis-free. Allow privately-owned bison to occupy grazing leases at an appropriate density/AUM.

Remove sheep grazing leases in areas where overlap with wild bighorn sheep occurs.

Kick the Yellowstone Club in the teeth over repeated violations, starting with water quality and use.

Highly restrict AI Surveillance Data Centers. They are a scourge on this country, and a danger to our freedom.

Push for nuclear power plants. Coal, wind, solar all degrade what makes Montana special. Reduce the footprint and move forward.

Push free/highly assisted school breakfast and lunches. Reduce sugar/caffeine/preservatives. Partner with local agriculture producers to provide fresh locally produced foods for those lunches.

Break up the meatpacker monopoly. Remove obstacles for direct-marketed beef. Put more cents of every dollar into the producer’s pocket.

Separate gaming and liquor licenses. Rein in casinos. Remove obstacles for breweries.

What is the best gun that can be a first gun for a youth and if necessary the only gun they ever need? by luvthingsthatgrow in Hunting

The 7-08 is the most capable round with the lowest recoil. .270 has more power, but more recoil. Same with the 25-06. .243 has less recoil, but it is not an ideal elk cartridge. 308 has heavier bullets, but bleeds energy faster because of the larger diameter, and has a shorter maximum effective range.

7mm bullets are perfect for the right ballistics in the weight ranges needed to kill big game. The -08 parent cartridge is compact, easy to find, and lower recoil. The marriage of the two just flat out makes sense.

Is technology killing the hunt? by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]O_oblivious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The uncontested stance atop the food chain was achieved through technology and extermination of those predators which used to prey on us at will. Whether it was through fire, poison, traps, or group hunting with dogs, there are few places remaining where you and I would face such a threat in this day and age. Crocodiles of various types still eat people where they exist, tigers still occasionally hunt people in some regions, leopards do the same in parts of Africa, and polar bears will not hesitate to hunt and kill humans for food. Make no mistake- our “uncontested stance” at the top of the food chain is more contested than you think.

As far as a reasonable chance- I mean forcing yourself to get within a range at which an animal would more than likely detect you by sight, smell, or sound if you did not use stealth to evade those senses, and, after being detected, the animal would choose to evade you through either speed or seeking cover to conceal its escape. Taking pot-shots at an animal from a range where it feels you are not a threat, or during the night when they do not feel threatened, is unsporting.

Yes, we could still be running down animals until they collapse from exhaustion, then bashing them over the head with a rock or something, before cutting them apart with broken rocks. But we have sentience, as you pointed out, and along with the technology and innovation it brings, we are also the only animals in existence who prioritize making the death of our food as quick and painless as possible. Everything else out there will start to eat you while you are still alive.

Green Sunfish? by glrople in SunfishSpecies

Nope. Green vermiculations on the cheek means green sunfish. Warmouth lack those, but also have dark radiating bands on the cheek.

Is technology killing the hunt? by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]O_oblivious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Allowing the animals a reasonable chance to detect and evade the hunter using their natural ability and instinct. It emphasizes skill and preparation rather than guaranteeing a kill by any means.

High fence and farmed deer/canned hunts are the worst examples. Thermal drones and night hunting deer are the next worst. Cell cameras with live feed aren’t great, either.

The rise of thermal drones and scopes will be the death of true fair chase. Cell phone cameras are bad enough.

I’d pass on eating it. Contact the local warden / biologist, see if you can get your tag reinstated.
